As some of you may know, I got married last summer. The next goal on the list of life things was to buy a house. We had been renting the same home for three years. She was over it, but we both waited and hoarded our monies, because while we are fantastic our finances, and make a good chunk of money, we are still in the income bracket that I can only describe as "sub-dAPhREAk level." As such, we had only two things in our favor: good credit scores and a sizable savings for a conventional loan.
Then it happened. The perfect house, at the perfect price, with the perfect yard, at the (ironically) perfect location was posted on Zillow one fateful evening. That's right: the house across the street that I've walked by for three years went on sale. My buddy hooked me up with a good agent (his mom has been a real estate agent for 30+ years; she was on vacation but called me and set me up with her friend). This agent was a coworker of mine from a job I had seven years ago! We worked a labor job in '08 because she needed to supplement her income at the time, what with the whole housing collapse and whatnot. Small world. And it gets smaller: my next door neighbor is my insurance agent. Here's more: we had a known plumbing issue and new neighbor who I once gave a bunch of free beer to welcome him and his wife to the neighborhood, happens to be a plumber! Needless to say, he helped me fix the problem for pocket change and more free beer.
Buying a house has its ugly sides as you may know. I had to constantly leave work to rush-sign new offers or agreements, etc. Inspections are EXPENSIVE, but let me tell you, worth EVERY cent. We found some things and had them all repaired at the owners expense. We had a cedar root growing right through the pipe ($$$$), as an example. There was the constant multi-party inefficient communication between me, to the agent, to his listing company, to him, and then back. Emails and phone calls every waking second, and signing check after check. The stress on both of us... Good thing my wife rocks. We shared the load equally. And my boss was awesome. He gave me as much time off as I needed.
We spent five days running around like freshly decapitated chickens. My friends and family came out to help us with the move. So many trips to the city dump... It is an advantage to know people that actually like you!
A little icing on the cake was that my landlord gave us our entire deposit back! During our walkthrough on the rental, I had a very strong stance: "Look what we did, look at these upgrades to your house at our expense," and so on, just in a very friendly tone  They said we were there best tenants ever (because we actually paid on time, which according to many landlords I know, including people in my family, is somehow rare). The house was rented out the next day.
Now, only half of my house is usable, what with the many unpacked boxes of crap everywhere, but I have the bathroom, kitchen, and master bedroom tamed. I have a big beautiful yard with weird flower stuff growing everywhere, some trees, a driveway, a garage, and this weird appliance called the "dish washer," which apparently washes dishes for you.
I am getting up there in age. I had some really, really, rotten luck a few years ago and I had all these plans that I did everything in my power to stick to. It was so hard for a while, but these last three years have made everything worth it. I have job security. I make more money. I have a great wife. I own a house. Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Three years later and my wife causal points out that I've not touched any of the hobby stuff in the closet since we moved in... man I miss table top gaming lol.
