quite surprised there is no topic on the only european eclipse for many years. obviously both Faroes and Svalbard are a little out of the way, but still only a couple flight hours away.

anyway the event is over, the weather on svalbard was unexpectedly splendid with totally clear sky -18 celsius and calm air and the view was awesome with the arctic backdrop.

from longyearbyen with love

Thank you for providing that picture. Somehow I couldn't enjoy the magnificence of such a moment - clouds in Germany. Watching it happen on an internet stream turned out to be boring. Your picture really shows how great of a moment such a rare event can be.

I got up this morning, signed on to irc, and saw someone linking a stream. Eclipse happened a minute later. I got lucky considering I didn't even know the eclipse was occurring!

It was an utter rip off, I've never seen it be so cloudy... I didn't notice a thing even though I prepared and bought special glasses and such.

was at school, teacher didn't let us leave the classroom for 2 minutes to watch it

I sit next to the window so I saw other students watch it with their teachers outside lol

I couldn't see shit yesterday.

Edit: how is Spitsbergen? I've always been curious how life must be for people who live on such a cold distant location. I'd like to visit some day.

no, but i do know one guy from the group. they are quite funny, they presented themselves as an expedition, made a website with bold statements, conducted preparatory excersice and then set up a camp in the absolutely worst beat spot in the area...

we are here staying in longyear with friends who sortof moved there. longyear is a small town, but you have everything in here and a lot of fun potential around.

haha!
i have been there, interesting place, allthough maybe a tad depressing at a glance.
i see the hostel i stayed at in your picture. there's an abandoned mine in the valley site across from
where you are standing, you probably already went up there!

wouldn't mind going back there if the opportunity presents itself, as you say, lost of fun potential.

Well I see you are Norwegian, so it's not that far for you, is it? With Norwegian resuming regular services, it's actually very cheap to fly to Longyear (when there isn't an eclipse). The real killer is accomodation, but during summer, camping should be fantastic and is free and legal almost everywhere (with apropriate polar bear protection).

PS: aren't you by any chance from around Oslo? If yes, don't you know an usable and reasonably priced car repair shop in the area? Right now my (very old) car is parked at the Gardemoen airport with broken front vipers and it's supposed to be raining a lot next week ...

and i never drove a car.

yes, i should work on gun licence for cheap protection before
next trip.

Didn't even know one was happening until someone told me like 1-2 hours beforehand. Still missed it because I was in a bookstore at that point. But whatever, I saw a proper one 16 years ago, that's enough.
