Switching to Linux Mint

I've always thought it would be really cool if I can tell everyone I uninstalled Windows and switched to Linux because Linux is better than Windows in every aspect or because FOSS is the best thing ever.

Though I do think that Linux is a good OS which trumps Windows in some ways and FOSS is an honorable thing to believe in, the main reason why I switched was because my 5 year old video card died and Windows Vista (yes, Vista) finally bailed on me. Maybe playing SC2 and Dota 2 finally took its toll, maybe it was because of poor ventilation — who knows.

I really didn't want to buy a new video card just for the sake of being able to play a few games over Christmas break though which is why I decided to just wait it out and install Linux Mint (Ubuntu wasn't my cup of tea) until I have a new PC.

To it's credit, Linux Mint was really easy to install and, as compared to Ubuntu, it looks and feels a lot like Windows. It was also refreshing to be able to customize the desktop environment. Personally, I'd be fine using it with no Windows dual boot, soon I might give it a shot for gaming.

I really thought about going yolo and playing and downloading Dota 2 with no video card then I found out that my processor was an Intel Pentium D (lol) so I just gave up and accepted that it wasn't worth it. I'll miss playing, but at least I have Twitch streams to get me by until summer comes.

Playing on Linux isn't worth it imo, it's too much of a clusterfuck. Just dual boot, game on Windows and do everything else on Linux.
ModeratorProtoss all-ins are like a wok. You can throw whatever you want in there and it will turn out alright.

This is the truth... for everything except BW, which works great on wine.

I think steam improved gaming on linux a lot though. I can play XCOM, Binding of Isaac and many other roguelikes on ubuntu via steam. I played hearthstone and baldurs gate enhaced edition with wine. If you want to play AAA fps games it is another story.
I use classic gnome as well because it looks simple and clean. Unity is bearable but i really did not like how gnome 3 or kde looks.

Depending on the games you usually play, Linux could actually be awesome for you. There are native clients for CSGO and Dota2. Both running awesome on Linux.

My Windows kept getting Bluescreens. Tried Win XP, Win7, Win8, old drivers, newest drivers. I thought "hardware failure", due to my PC being old as fuck. Learned that there's native clients for the game is play (CSGO), and gave it a shot. Lo and behold, Linux not crashing. Can play CSGO again without buying new PC. 1 year misery ended. Linux. :D

True story.

Now mostly playing SC2 and HotS, so I'm booting Windows, cause there's no Linux versions. PC too bad for emulation with WINE.

PS: Only Source engine games kept crashing my Windows. SC2 and HotS working fine... but Dota2 and CSGO on the other hand, bluescreening every 30minutes.
