So it's nearing the end of november here in kitchener, and WTF THE WEATHER????
Apparently this is what weather is like in January, and it gets even worse in february(source: people who actually lived here in a winter)
Seriously though, coming from Vancouver, this is just about the coldest I have ever been in my life. -8 to -10 with 40kph wind T.T
Also buy snow tires guys, and drive slow/safe. I'm still on (shitty) all-seasons, and I can drift my car around some corners right now at less than 20kph. Was exhilarating for the first couple, and after that it's scary as fuck when you realize the car is understeering like crazy, and that the car can easily slide sideways.
To do list:
Winter tires.
Emergency Shovel(for the trunk)
Warmer jacket (mine is good til about -5, at which point it starts getting inadequate, especially with the wind)

It was in the -20's in Calgary not too long ago, not including the windchill. Stay safe on the roads, you'll get used to it!

When I saw someone from Canada complaining about -8 to -10, I assumed it must be F because otherwise wtf... admit I was kind of surprised to see them not using C so this kind of explains it, but come on. That is a fair amount of wind though!

New Jersey weather is always bipolar, we're used to getting from 0 to 70 to -10 (Fahrenheit, -20 to 20 to -25 for Celsius) in a single week.

It's C, but I lived in Vancouver my whole life, and it rarely, if ever gets this cold, and I can't remember ever getting wind like this AND it being cold at the same time.

And indeed, -20C, strong winds. Essentially walking outside for 5-10 with regular thickness jeans will result in your legs being absolutely numb to any touch for a few minutes, followed by painful defrosting as you go inside.
But yeah, nothing too surprising for Calgary, probably warmer than the average year.
Just find a passion for skiing, cross country skiing, staying indoors, etc. Being outside in the cold you can protect yourself, being outside in 40C weather you can't, so consider yourself lucky!

I'm with micro. that seems super high for a Canadian to be complaining about the weather. it's nearly that cold here in Washington DC today.
I mean I assume you're talking the high for the day compared to our low, but like you said it's only November.

Sounds like you are under-dressed. There's no reason not to be comfortably warm in medium-length outings in -20C weather. Do you have a decent toque/gloves/some form of neck wear? Good boots?

Seriously. I'm up in Ottawa and I'm still biking to and from work because the weather is still nice Time to man up and deal with the cold. When your eyes start freezing open or you have icy tears, then you can start to complain!

I always like it when I can feel the snot freezing in my nose. It's not winter until that happens.

Mostly just face/feet/legs being cold when the wind blows up.. According to wikipedia, Vancouver is the 4th most temperate city in Canada(winter average is like 4C). Clothes/jacket I brought over are specced accordingly. This past week has been a string of days that are equal or worse than the worst Vancouver winters I've been through, so I'm definitely underdressed as far as jacket goes, and gloves I have are minimally acceptable once it gets too cold. Jacket I have currently is one I could wear inside a 70F room, and so long as I'm not doing physical activity I won't overheat. Just waterproof and windproof.
Definitely a learning experience(albeit not a fun one). Didn't expect it to drop so rapidly from 4-5C to -8 to -10C, that's for sure.

I don't know why people don't like the cold, it's really beautiful imo.
And man, you guys are weak. I don't know if you remember September 7th in Calgary this year, sunny, 26C, beautiful day... 20 hours later, between 10-20cm of snow collected throughout Calgary in subzero temperatures.
