I have this feeling in my gut that when I go on vacation, my landlord comes into my room (she has the key to it) and snoops around. (She lives on the bottom floor of the complex.)
I'm looking for some tips on how I might rig something to verify my suspicions. I was thinking about sticking a piece of paper in the slit of the door so that if it opens, the paper should drop to the ground, but I tried it a few time and it doesn't seem very reliable. Any suggestions?

Tape hairs across the door. Dust a doorknob. Dig a pit trap.

Mind explaining how these work?
Good to see the Manlyfesto back in action.

What do you plan to do if you discover the landlord did in fact snoop around your room? If you are just curious, then you can use whatever method you want. If you actually plan to take some sort of action, you will need proof that the landlord came in, so things like taping hair across the door won't be sufficient.

Tape hairs across the door and they'll break if you open it. Ofc you have to take the window out if you want it to be on the inside.

Put a big piece of glue paper in front of the door.

Leave a big red sticky note somewhere super obvious and write DO NOT FORGET TO BRING THIS!!!!!!!!!!! When you're gone call your landlord with an urgent voice and ask if you had forgotten anything.

Put a punji pit in your house. It is a hole in the ground with sharp stakes at the bottom, covered by leaves. When she steps on the leaves, she will fall to her doom.

Leave a note that's visible and obvious once you open the door that reads "Whoever keeps breaking into my room, you are on camera." Then you come home and see if your room has been turned upside-down looking for the camera.
Or what my brother used to do (I was a shitty older brother) was have a shirt or something tucked into the top of the door which would fall when it was opened. He got really good at hiding it, too.

empty a sack of pit vipers in there before you go. If you find her dead and bloated in the hall when you get back you will know the truth and you will have already dished out some sweet justice.

Doesn't your landlord have full rights to inspect the premises, especially while you're on vacation? Unless she's straight up stealing or damaging something, I feel like you could just talk to her.

Here in Canada the landlord has to give at least 24h notice and you get to be there. There are a lot of tenancy rights here though.

Leave your fetish porn out and see if she says anything about it later

pull a jackass high five when the door is opened.

My landlord also made an unsanctioned stop at my place recently... How disappointed she must have been to see I spent the entire day before cleaning my property and house on a whim.

Hair across door and drawers etc.. is the most practical solution here

Rig up a trap that fucks with intruders. A good one would be to make it so whoever comes in 'accidentally' breaks something that either has value to the landlord or looks like it has value to you.

Get a piece of tape, and cut it halfway through then attach that to the crack of the door outside. When the door opens, it's gonna rip.
If you are paranoid that your landlord might replace the tape, sign your name or something in the tape too. Best to use tape that easily rips.
if you want to be more creative you can tie a string(like thread or something thin) to something inside the house and tie it to your doorknob when you leave the house. Make sure that it's not too long so that when they open the door, the string breaks. And then you can even be more creative, and add something like when the string gets pulled, something happens. You can even add traps like a cup of water falls on them or something by attaching a string to a cup of water on a bookshelf/ladder beside the door and tie it across the door so when they pass through it gets pulled and the water falls on them.

Can't you just change the lock?

Typically you don't configure your living space so that the owner cannot get in.

It varies a lot place to place. Generally I think most places it has to be announced in a reasonable timeframe, usually like 24hours, but they could very easily invent a 'valid' reason like saying there was a leak they thought was in your unit and they happened upon your dead hooker storage.
Having busted tape or a piece of torn hair as proof of their snooping wouldn't be proof of anything even if it were illegal. You'd most likely need video proof of their entry, and proof that it was without merit. It's a lot easier to just get a cheap safe and lock up anything valuable/thigns you don't want them to see. Do some door thing to see if anyone came in and if they did I guess figure out something with your laptop camera

So any updates?
From what I understand, for now he's just curious if his landlord is indeed entering his room, and for his purposes, that should be plenty sufficient.
But yes, obviously if you want to go to court or something, then you need some better proof like a video or something.

It's also $70, which is quite an investment.
