Leaving to Tunisia

Hey everyone!

I'm heading to Tunisia tomorrow and I was wondering if anyone has experience in that country. I'll be in Tunis for a bit and I have two free days to myself. Does anyone know of any activities I can do? Maybe places to get some good food? It's actually my first time abroad/on a plane, so I want to get out of my comfort zone and try something new for myself. Thanks!

Never been to Tunisia, but generally when travelling I like to try and find places tourists don't go and that tends to give the best food results. Hotel staff should be quite good, I usually just ask where they like to eat, not where i "should" eat.

Yep. Best advice to give someone going on holiday is to stay off the beaten path. Find a local, get them to show you round proper.

I went to Tunisia 15 years ago. Stayed at a beach resort but went to visit the city nearby (Sousse) a bit. I had a lot of fun going to the souq, sit down with sellers to bargain for the shit I wanted to buy. It's a fun activity and they will serve you some delicious mint flavored tea.

Thanks everyone! Souqs look like an interesting place to be. I wasn't even familiar with the word; it's pretty much like a bazaar right? I've been brushing up on my French, so maybe it would be a good way to practice speaking.

I'm actually going there for an excavation, so I'm not really there for holiday, but I'm deciding to stay a few days longer after I finish up the season.

If going off the beaten path in that region you should inform yourself about the security situation in detail though. After all you dont want to be the next guy in the news for having disappeared. The German Foreign Office has quite a few warnings for travellers to Tunesia. To certain regions you should not go at all. Even though it is still better than its 2 neighbours.

Tunisia's a very interesting place - although I haven't been to Tunis and the country has likely changed significantly since the revolution in 2010/11. The best places we went were Sfax, which is a very attractive city and Matmata, which is one of the places used for filming Star Wars (with amazing underground dwellings). Neither of those is particularly close to Tunis, however.

It's been a while but I have been in Sousse a couple of years ago. The beach was pretty fabulous as was their coffee. Mostly I remember that I had good food. Brik comes to mind as does chakchouka. They had great pastries as well.
