Learning to draw - an update

its been a while since my last update in this art related series of blogs. During these months i stopped following "The Complete Book of Drawing: Essential Skills for Every Artist" and decided it would be better to just do my things, several months in this journey i realize my lack of basics, yeah i could draw some barely decent portraits, but trying to draw what i had in my mind was a complete different issue. i spent a lot of time sketching, trying to come up with some original art, but again my lack of basics skills was a big wall i couldnt get over.

but those months werent lost time, these are some of the drawings i made during that time:

here i realized i didnt know how to draw expressions/feelings

and here i was starting to forget how to draw portraits, now i draw portraits in between my other drawing practice so i dont forget how to do it :s

after i realized my lack of basics i returned to the book i mentioned first and started to follow it.

i just recently bought "Figure Drawing for All It's Worth" i really want to be able to draw human body and capture the feelings that they express. right now im practicing the proportions of an average man and im amazed of all the things that i was missing. i will keep practicing this until i finish the book and the return to "The Complete Book of Drawing" to keep getting better.

oh, also im doing some fast sketches of people and places using internet pictures, i tried to do them in 1-2 min.

You reminded me I bought a small box of watercolours ages ago and never used it, really should.

I think with drawing books / lessons should always be approached with a view to learning from them, but not necessarily treating them as gospel truth or the only way of doing something.
