A bunch of bullshit things happened in sequence.

First off, yesterday afternoon one of my housemates finally clogged the toilet. I say finally because he uses way too much goddamn toilet paper and just sort of leaves it floating in the toilet sometimes, so it's basically inevitable it will get clogged sooner or later.

I think he has some kind of ass problem because sometimes there's like bloody explosions in the toilet bowl, but that's his business. It's also his business to clean up after his business, and not to leave three kilograms (6.6 pounds for you yanks) of bloody toilet paper floating in the toilet.

Anyways, toilet ended up clogged. Whatever. Any non-moron should realize "oh I clogged the toilet, better get the plunger and fix it", but apparently not because it's still clogged this morning. I don't know where the landlord keeps the plunger and he wasn't around this morning so I didn't fuss with it, just shat on the floor.*

But then beyond that, a new twist on past shower troubles. The landlord recently installed some new shower knobs which you can get actual grip on, which is great. Haven't had a tightly clenched knob since then. But this morning when I went to shower, there was no cold water even when I unscrewed the knob fully. Hot water comes fines, and the sink right next to the tub has both, but somehow no cold water in the shower, making it unusable. How does this even make sense?

End result is I washed my hair in the sink like a fucking proletarian.

*not actually true

Update: So the toilet was unclogged, that's good.

As for the shower, apparently my housemate Hulk-raged or something because he somehow stripped the threading on the inside of the knob? Or something like that, seems absurd. Still no shower today QQ.

Sounds like a tough time, I've had a landlord actual fix things in only half the places I live, but I am pretty sure buying a plunger and fixing a simple clog is the tenants problem

One place we had a tub that didn't drain so always had like a foot of grey nasty water which I shoved someone into during a party dispute, eventually we had to borrow a pipe snake and pulled out 8 inches of nasty smelling partially decomposed hair.

Roommates suck, that is the long and short of it. Why don't you own your own plunger though?

The landlord definitely has a plunger, he lives in the house with us.

But in general it would be pretty outrageous for the landlord not to have a plunger for a building they own, they cost like $10, how greedy can you be? Why would people moving between temporary residences be expected to move a plunger with them when the permanent caretaker of the building could just have one?

I've lived in at least five different apartments/houses as a tenant, never had or expected my Landlord to provide one is all.

Depends on the style of residence. These were furnished places? Kitchen accessories?

Ah that would be different, those aren't too common in the states, or at least not in Minneapolis.

Ah yeah,in the states landlords are requires to provide heat, other than that good luck taking the bad ones to court to fix anything else. One thing I've learned over 7 years of renting is get EVERYTHING in writing and submit a written request for everything you need fixes done because when it comes down to it, spoken doesn't mean anything.

Is there a central authority that deals with this? In Ontario we have the Landlord and Tenant Board which resolves all disputes.

Shitty housemates suck man. I live with a kid (random housemate assignment) and he literally doesn't pick anything up. I had to shout at him to pick up the literal PILE of used tissues from the ground in the common room. He also loudly fucks his girlfriend twice a day and had the worst foot odor I have ever smelt.

Hang in there bro. Hopefully your shower can get fixed.
I used to play random, but for you I play very specifically.

Landlord tenant laws and rights vary greatly by state and municipality and it's common for landlords to try to charge for things that it specifically states in the lawbooks that they cannot, if they own a lot of properties they count on you not knowing your rights. Last place tried charging me over 1000 charges where the only legitimate charge was a damaged shade.

My current landlord has everything fixed within a couple days or even same day and I don't think he would try the same thing, I think about moving but my landlords just too good to take a chance on a nicer location.

I was expecting something more substantially awfully and less overdramatic go talk to your housemate, tell him you have a problem with his toilet paper consumption and would he please unclog his mess. Common courtesy.
As for the shower - call a plumber, tell the landlord afterwards. And speak to your housemate about it. And whoever else uses the showers.
Or I dunno. Blog about it I guess?

Sorry to add to this but:

Plebian**

I lived in shared housing for 3 years but it was cheap and there were many people that I wish I could have hanged out with more. Not so happy with apartment lifestyle but my bed and pillow are heavenly. No bugs. Great climate control. Dirty dishes and fridge were the worst. Sometimes random noises bothered me too.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

Yeah I might say that the plebs is a subset of the proletariat.

Yeah I might say that the plebs is a subset of the proletariat.

Well, I would argue that that's not exactly true. The proletariat is constituted of the people who don't have control over the means of production, and so they sell themselves as workforce. That is, working class only. However, plebes include people who are essentially not the aristocracy, that is both lower and "middle class" if you will. Artisans during the mercantile times, before the "bourgeoisie", could be rich but generally not quite as rich as the aristocracy. They were still plebes even though they weren't technically working class. I'd argue that if anything, proletariat is a subset of plebes - although "plebe" is ill adapted to be used to describe any people of a capitalist society, and even though it seems (to me) that plebe has even more of a negative connotation.

Long story short, the proletariat doesn't own shit, the plebes can.

Sure but I'm saying OP used the right word. A proletarian is inherently fucked, a plebeian may not be.

a landlord providing a plunger, even in a furnished place, would be odd. and if you knew your space did not have one, why wouldn't you just get it?? that just seems weird. if the landlord isnt home, you just have to deal with a shitty toilet?

the roommate thing sucks though. make that dumbass clean it up.

Maybe it's a Canada thing but all of the apartments/houses I've ever lived in have had a plunger... I would have the same problem as you for sure =(

Uum, you should probably tell your roommate to schedule a colonoscopy. Also, do you usually take cold showers? If my shower even had a cold water knob, I'd never use it.

Do you not have split knobs in the U.S.? Like you turn the hot a little, and you turn the cold a little, and it mixes and comes out at just the temperature you want. You can't shower in just the hot water, it will scald you.

Not all showers/sinks are like this but it's quite common.

In my experience, most sinks in the U.S. have separate knobs, but showers only have one. It could be different in other parts of the country... and never mind what I said about not using them both if the hot one's scalding. That doesn't sound fun. On a serious note, your roommate probably has an urgent medical condition. I don't know how he wouldn't already realize that himself, though.

Maybe in hotels or some showers, but my showers at home have absolutely always been of the two-knob variety

I think if the toliet is getting clogged often and suddenly cold water is not working on the shower pipes I'm guessin the place is old and the plumbing is building up like calcium deposit or something.. should probably tell your landlord to get a plumber to check it out lol
but seriously you should just buy a plunger and put it next to the toliet.. if your roomie has the slightest shred of dignity I would think he'd attempt to unclog it after use if he sees the plunger like right there lol.

Update: So the toilet was unclogged, that's good.

As for the shower, apparently my housemate Hulk-raged or something because he somehow stripped the threading on the inside of the knob? Or something like that, seems absurd. Still no shower today QQ.

I heard if you put bleach in your toilet and leave it there for a few hours it unclogs on its own.

The risk:reward for this joke is really high. At best you get half a chuckle from me, at worse I'm an idiot and fucking kill myself with chloramine.

I see what you mean, but you might say that the shit owned him, which holds water in a gaming-based forum AND perfectly fits the Marxist analysis of a proletarian's relationship with the "shit", being the means of production. You are a slave to the shit, it forces you to do things that you don't want to do for your subsistence. You are the shit's puppet.

Your life is an overly stretched allegory involving filth and commies.

oh no you dont know the half of it . . .sigh here we go

tldr: girl wanted a house of 4 of us to do cleaning chors everyday which she said she would inspect . . . yeah . . .right!

Main . .
I got into a house with 4 others, it ws ok for the first few months. then my friend said that they hated their house as they were all "messy bastards" and didnt clean anything up at all. i told him that the only way it works living with randomers is to ALL do your own bit and leave nothing EVER.

It ws too little too late for fiend 1. another of my ,mates off the same course about 2 weeks later said the same thing! i gave him same advice but their house had some dickheads in ther and started fighting each other and smashing into each others rooms and shit . . not good. so my issue came very shortly after this, it was near christmas and i went out every night and only got back in at 4am, didnt get up till about 2-3 . . the problem was the girl in our house had no mates and just moaned all the time that we were coming in too late and making too much noise and the usual shit, but in fairness when i think we tried fucking hard to keep it down and avoid her . . then the real shit came in. she said the house was a tip . . it really wasnt cos i told the other 3 my method of keeping ur shit to urself and clean up ur own shit . . NEVer leave naything till later, get it done keep all of ur shit in ur rooms. .we all did. but girl didnt like it, i forgot her name now . .sophie?

i told her that we were all adults here at uni getting pissed every single night and leaving work till the last minute ,what the fuck does she expect from 3 lads and herself .. so she devised a cleaning rota . . holy fuck this thing must of taken her all day! Me and my mate matt saw this thing on the fridge and we marvelled at the layout and how much sense it made!

so we came in earlier one night . about 3.45 am and came into house and we say like a fucking loads of dishes un washed just all over the side . . now me and matt didnt care we just looked at each other and said . .these fuckin urs? is it jez;s . .no dude doesnt eat! . . so it must be hers . . so we played motogp1 on xbox for an hr before we both passed out

next morning dishes still there . . .and then at dinner . .and then at 4pm . . and then at 10pm where for some reason me and matt didnt go out . . . We were sat there and this girl came in and said . . so whos washing the dishes? Me and matt looked at each other and said . . whos are they? Mine she said. "why are we to wash ur dishes?" i said, matt pulled a face. Because on the rota its your turn to wash up! I said, have you taken the pisss and cooked something and used everything you had in the cupboard? She said, it doesnt matter what i use its ut turn to wash up (baring in mind this was the first day ineffect of the rota) so i said ,look if you want to clean the houyse all day, go and fucking clean it, but all im going to do is clean my own shit up when ive used it and leave nothing out EVER.

she didnt get it and started going crazy, so she kept on leaving shit all over the place, towels, puts cups and all sorts only to say, its someones turn on the rota . . . and to think that ungrateful bitch . . i cleaned the toilet when it wasnt even my turn!
