Do any of you guys frequent the website The Hooded Utilitarian?
It's mostly a Comic book critique website but the content includes general social commentary. There are a bunch of really talented writers there that have come up with some pretty fascinating articles. The tagline of the website is "a pundit in every panopticon," so you can guess that the writers are influenced by Foucault and try to look at issues from as wide a perspective as they can. I found out about this site through a This American Life story and have been kind of hooked on it ever since.

I don't even read comic books but these articles totally hooked me so I wanted to share them here.
There is a really thought provoking and poignant, as well as highly critical article about the sequel to the famed comic "The Watchmen" called "Who Whitewashes the Watchmen?" (a comic I actually did read, and loved). The writer completely tears the sequels apart in a way that is really convincing and entertaining. It also provides a really nice deconstruction of what the original Watchmen was about, and made me think about the original in new light. I really recommend reading that article if your interested in Watchmen.

There was also a interesting article about the influences of Evangelical Christianity in comic book writing, and takes a close look at some of the parallels between the morals presented in official Batman comics and fucked up christian parenting books that some comic book writers wrote in their off time. The Good and Evil Guide to Parenting

Iv been checking this site about once a month and iv found a lot of really interesting/funny content so I wanted to share it with all of you

thank you for link

i loved watchmen when i read it more than 20 years ago, i re read it every 3 or 4 years then every 4 5, but it has never grown older or less of an enjoyable read, it is the super hero comic book

i admit that i was always sad when people i suggested it to didn't take to it as much as i did when i first read it

defending it against a prequel would seem warranted only so far as it would serve a purpose (making people read it as something important and not as just another comic book, ratings are so ... secondary)
I just read part 1 and while i would need to read the whole prequel product (only read 2 or 3 issues out of the several series available) it seems that this post on the prequel
is well written
a bit biased
maybe warranted (ridding on watchmen success is wrong, if it reduces it)

so, again, ty for linking

edit: forgot an if

I try to check in quite regularly. I'm actually a comics scholar myself and am hoping to have some of my work published through one of these networks in the new year. It's great to see that people here are interested in this kind of thing, and even better to hear how their work has helped you reflect on your reading of Watchmen.

You should also check out:

http://www.comicsgrid.com/
This is a peer reviewed online open access journal, there is some fantastic scholarship on there, this is my favorite article, interesting, insightful and accessible:

http://www.comicsgrid.com/article/view/cg.ac/12

Also, http://comicsforum.org/ is another blog site aimed at making comics scholarship more accessible. They've just finished a month long series of comics and culture. Really good.

Another great site is http://www.graphixia.cssgn.org/ I attended a roundtable discussion with these guys in November and they have some pretty big plans for the coming year to increase their output.

These sites are a great way of finding out about other comics, I thoroughly recommend.

I read the Hooded Utilitarian whenever I have the time. I think it has the best intellectual coverage of comic books besides Matt Seneca's blog.

I have a love for mediums where social constructs are dissected and general commentary is made upon. Will enjoy this site very much.
