So explain to me what a Wiezenglas is and how it makes the beer better. I haven't had any of the beers yet. Is beer typically poured into glasses or do you ever drink from the bottle?

Well, don't really take me serious on that matter. I'm quite anal about beer, I grew up in the area with the highest (beer) brewery density of the world.

Theoretically speaking it doesn't matter what and how you drink ordinary beer, with the exception being that plastic cups really suck. Cheaper brands (e.g. exports, astra, becks and all that shit) can be drank out of the bottle. It really doesn't change much. If you want to create some atmosphere you should try to get your hands on a beer mug, preferably a stone mug like this:

Also, especially in Southern Germany, there are different beer mugs. That's a whole lot different from areas like Cologne, where the people drink their silly excuse for horse piss (Kölsch) out of 0,2l glasses. Around Munich or so you usually drink beer from 0,5 mugs (Halbe, Nothern Bavaria: Seidla), but you can also order/drink 1l, which would be "A Maß".

Note the difference in size

It just feels more natural in my opinion.

Weizen / White Bear / Wheat Beer (not sure about the translation, but your Erdiner IS one) really sucks if you drink it out of a can (that's an atrocity) or out of the bottle. It tends to foam a lot more and it's not too easy to actually pour it into a glass/mug if you do it for the first time. You can imagine you swallow a lot more foam out of the bottle than actual liquid - that's a problem you don't encounter with pils or other kinds of beer. It's better to use a stone/beer mug again, even though the Weizenglas (or whatever the rest of Germany calls it) makes it easier to actually pour the beer. Again, the foam is a bit tricky.

Here the shit's empty. Now, if you have a mug or aforementioned Weizenglas here are few tricks to make life easier:

- Do not pour the White Bear in as if it was water, meaning do not hold the bottle in a 90° angle over the mug / glass
- instead, turn the mug/glass horizontal and slowly start pouring it in, this way little to no foam should be in
- the more liquid goes into your mug, the more you should increase the angle of the mug and the higher you should lift the bottle
- safe the last 5-10% of the beer and keep it in the bottle. Start shaking it a little, so the foam starts to build up
- if you done it right, you can pour the foam over the beer

The thing with beer is, that it gets bitter towards the end. Like, if you drink it out of bottle the last few centimeters can be horrible, it's stale and bleh. Weizen can be exponentially worse, because the barm (hopefully right translation) will settle at the bottom of the bottle. Hence the whole shaking thing towards the end.

Before I forget, White Bear / Weizen is superb if you drink it after a heavy work out (!!!).

K, I just re-read might still sound confusing, I'll photoshop in a bit :ugly:

Ok, thanks to some moron, here's a video explaining the steps: http://www.helpster.de/weizenbier-einschenken-so-machen-sie-es-richtig_15222

Note, the video suggests you stop pouring after 75% - this depends on the size and form of your glass.

It blows my mind how little respect the US has for beer. Why couldn't I be raised learning such great things. I'm going out on a beer mug shopping spree today. And then I'm going to play some soccer and after lift some weights. Now I understand why Germany is so productive! Beer is better after a good days work.

Dude, don't think my area or me are representing Germany. Most of the Germans are not too different from Americans, it's just a few areas with their own traditions. We like to get in fights about beer here and we certainly make a fuss about it. But it's not like it's the most important thing in our country, it's just like everyone around here in rural Franconia has nothing else to do, but to drink, discuss football and trash talk about the former DDR. This is different in Berlin, Cologne or elsewhere. They all have some traditions, but it's not like you get shot, nor does the average German care much for how you pour your beer in and most actually do not only believe brands like Becks, Astra or Oettinger is beer, but are proud of its quality. BRrrrrr

Edit

Forgot, but since L_Master missed that, too:

Try Weißwurstfrühstück (word to word translation: White Sausage Breakfast). I'm not sure if you get the stuff, though, it's a southern (Munich) speciality. You need

- Weißwürste, one pair (apparently, according to google it's really weißwurst in English)
- sweet mustard (not much though)
- one or two pretzel(s)
- a bottle of white beer

you do:

- cook the Weißwürste
- peel the skin off
- eat it with mustard & the prezels

Now, usually, you either drink it with a whole glass (0,5l) of Weizen or with a "Schnitt". Now a "Schnitt" is different. I described how to pour in the Weizen completely without having foam. A Schnitt is the other way round, you really want to have foam. Just keep the mug and pour in the Weizen completely, until the mug is full. It'll take a few minutes to settle and if you done it correctly your 0,5l mug will only be half full. Enjoy.

While I absolutely support the proposition of having a Weißwurstfrühstück, do NOT literally cook the Weißwürste. They will burst and look shitty (because the water inside will begin to boil and expand). Just heat them up carefully. I personally boil some water, pour it over them and keep the whole thing just somewhat warm using the lowest power level of my stove for about 10 minutes. Also, add some salt to the water, and, if you're feeling fancy, some flat-leaved parsley and lemon peel. Guten Appetit!

Thats a matter of taste but the best part imho was to try them all before. :D

The first package was around 11 beers but the woodcrate got damaged at the packing center in germany. After it the whole sending thing was delayed by other stuff in my life. So i kind of forgot about it for a long time and now used a smaller package instead.
About wurst or any kind of meat too many problems at the border control of the usa. not an option!
Candy was okay not much trouble with regulations if they are gifted.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinder_Surprise
from the year 1938 sweets that contain a non eatable object are prohibited from import to the usa and the importer can get fined up to 2500 US dollar per egg. This was recently changed in June, 2013 they are now legal to bring into the United States.

Woah that was scarce. I didnt know about this before. That would have been expensive package if i sent them earlier. xD

Yeah, I didn't think that post through and forgot about re-reading, I meant something like slowly boil the water :x. Reminds me at the local "pub", where the bartender really does cook them, because he doesn't give a shit. As a result you'll get them broken. If you complain, he'll tell you that's the "Senffurche" (roughly: mustard trench).

cmon, when you get a package from germany, you can fill one with candy and another with beer ... (or sausage and sauerkraut)
or are these your favorite beer-types?
but in general very nice package.

He originally sent me a package with more beer but the German post wrecked the package :\

The other beer is fine out of the bottle.

But Weizen is special, it has special residue in the bottom of the bottle that you really dont want to drink.
So you pour it into a special glass and even when pouring it into the glass, you dont want every last drop of the bottle in the glass.

I know some strange people who actually love putting the thick yeast remainders into their weizen. Don't ask me why.

RIESEN are fucking awesome. Also sending a package around the world is fun. We should start to send the package around with a diary and let people sign it / forward it with something from their country etc. :3
