Thats a pretty crappy view of life. I work for a company where all the way up to the CTO cares very much about their employes and has a very open environment.

Are you my boss? He says shit like this all the time blatantly ignoring how many of us out there are stewing in their own repressed rage and low morale lol But you probably have a better job than I

hm, sounds like the management is taking the very Chinese approach of "respect your elders," which wasn't very helpful for you :/

I feel like that'd be less likely to happen in a Western setting haha

Lol, I worked with the shittiest people at my job that are 1000x worse than this for a year for far less pay than this. I would say patience and self discipline are virtues you need to work on. I don't think your boss was saying 'give into her', probably more like 'We all know she's stupid/bitch. Just ignore it and be the bigger man.'

No. Don't apply Western thinking to the situation. His boss was specifically saying, "Give in to her." She's the elder, the lead, and also probably not Chinese.

It's something that you don't see here. But something that can happen there - the culture is very different.

My boss specifically told me to give in to her, because thats her character and that she about to retire. The senior analyst is chinese btw.

What exactly does that mean 'give into her' then? It doesn't make sense to me.

Are you an immigrant Chinese or a Singaporean Chinese?

Your case would be ripe for a work place harassment lawsuit.

As in let her win. She is always right in other words.

Im a Singaporean Chinese. In Singapore, this kind of harassment is usually not reported/sued. Basically you cant prove your case in other words. There was only 1case recently that was successfully pursued, let me leave the case here.

http://sg.news.yahoo.com/video-of-man-hitting-worker-in-office-goes-viral-043238636.html
http://therealsingapore.com/content/slapping-video-victims-family-demanding-100k-compensation

This is how Singapore working society is like. This man(29years old) is paid less than a intern at SGD$500 a month(around $200 USD) and isn't given any benefits or leave, for 3 years.
His case was only discovered when another intern working there took a video of that supervisor slapping him, and thus can be prosecuted.

This is a extreme case I agree, but the core issues is there. You do not speak up to your boss. You are expected to take harassment and abuse quietly most of the time. As for harassment case? It doesn't work in Singapore unless you have solid and irrefutable proof, like that video.
In my case, it's better for me to walk away, and not burn my bridges.

A couple of years ago I worked in a door factory. The entirety of my job was to take different sizes of cut wood off of a very slow moving conveyor belt and stack them on a cart beside me. I literally did not have to change my body position the entire day. To top it off my immediate supervisor would come and scream at me almost daily. She was a miserable hate filled woman, and she would make fun of practically everything about me. My choice of clothes, zits on my face, my weight, my glasses, my work ethic, basically anything she thought would get a rise out of me.

After about a week of it, I went to my head boss and I explained the situation to him. His response? "She's been here thirty years and we can find someone to replace you in a couple of days".

That night I started printing off resumes and looking for other jobs. But I could never find one that fit into my schedule and paid as well as this one did. So I sucked it up. I had goals that I seriously wanted to obtain. I wanted to attend university and I wanted to travel to Japan. So I kept my mouth shut, I sucked it up, and I vented to my friends on the weekends. And eight months later I quit, having finally saved enough money to do what I wanted to do.

The point is man, there's always going to be shit that's going to make your life unpleasant. That doesn't mean you have to live in it, but you do have to learn to deal with it.
Easy doesnt fit into grownup life.

That's the thing though - you assessed your own situation and realized there was no better alternative so you sucked it up and trucked on. OP sounds pretty optimistic about other career opportunities. You should only suck it up when you really have to.

This is false. There are normally douchebags on every workplace ofcourse but what the OP describes is extreme. She is not just being a dick, she is putting a clamper on his development and career while making his 8 hours misserable.

To the OP: What about recommendations from that place? Working at a place for two years then showing up at your next place of employment doesn't look too good if you have no recommendations. So is there anyone that works there which you can use in your next job interview?

Other then this, don't worry about it. You have a degree and two years of experience, so finding something shouldn't be too difficult, the first job is always the hardest.

Interesting that Chemical Engineering in Singapore seems so shitty. Up here, Engineering - especially Chemical, Mechanical, and Electrical are practically the most valuable science-based degrees you can do. Very professional work environment, from what I heard, nothing anything close to resembling what you've mentioned. Odd.

Well, over here in asia, there is a huge emphasis placed on the young obeying/blindly respecting the old. If you're the younger person, tradition dictates that you must listen to your older colleagues, even if both parties are equally ranked or peers. The OP is 26, his senior analyst is 60, which is probably why his boss told him to suck it up. The workplace in asia is waaaaaaaaaaay different compared to the West. You suck up every abuse/harassment your boss throws at you and are expected to stay quiet.
(The age thing is just my speculation. I'm pretty sure Singapore is culturally more western than most asian countries)
