It will be nice to not have that feeling of worry and dread any time I have a moment to myself. He and I are going to see all the bad action movies that have come out in the last year, since he hasn't been able to watch anything overseas.
Since I can't put this on Facebook or Twitter

Exactly and my brother is in a command postion, so they would freak out if they saw me post anything. Its not like they are watching us, but my brother would be super upset if I put something up there. Since he commands about 50 guys, he is against taking any risks, no matter how minor.

I was just confused because I have friends in the army and they often post pictures of themselves on facebook and stuff like "deployed to germany! wish me luck!". Is it ok as long as you don't post sensitive information? Stuff like "can't wait to see my brother soon!" Sorry for the questions all this stuff is interesting to me haha No, not really, that would be bad. He is in an area where people shoot at him and I can't really be posting that I will see him soon. If someone was aware or knew he was the commander of his group and was able to figure out who his family members were(this is not a far leap, since he deals with locals all the time), they could easly figure out around when he is leaving. This is how he explained it to me: Local person(who is harmless) knows my brother is commander of 50 people. Local person tells someone who is not harmless my brothers name and rank Not harmless person or others looks him up on facebook and figures out who is family members and friends are One of us posts that he comming home and we should see him soon Now they know tha a large amount of troops likely are leaving soon and maybe even out of which airport. So at the end of the day, we are better off saying nothing. My TL acocunt has almost no connection to my brother, so it isn't likely to be a problem here.

I never thought of social media as a source of potential intelligence leaks, but I see now how it can be. It's pretty scary that any schmuck with a computer can potentially find out dangerous information about troop movements by snooping around on twitter. We live in a world that's different than the one we used to live in.

It's pretty scary that any schmuck with a computer can potentially find out dangerous information about troop movements by snooping around on twitter. We live in a world that's different than the one we used to live in. People don't think about what they put online a lot or how people could use it. Its not rocket science to figure who people are on the internet once they have their real name or know where they are from. There was a big problem in Iraq where folks were figuring out when troop transports were leaving based on post from family members or the service members online. Those same people would plan their attempts to shoot down aircraft based on that information. Lucky for all of us, they never got it right. But once the army figured out that was how they were planning the attacks, they put an end to people telling their familys the exact they leaving Iraq. Its sucks and people don't realise the amount of information they put on the internet about themselves. Lucky for me, I only need to worry about that for a little while longer.
