The following list is obviously very subjective, but I'm a big RPG enthusiast and these are some of my personal favourites.

Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6 and Golden Sun are the best 2D RPGs I have played.

Morrowind is hands down the best of the 3 most recent Elder Scrolls games gameplay-wise, you can get mods for better graphics.

Final Fantasy VI-X are widely regarded as some of the best games ever made, although everyone has their own opinion on which one they like best. They're all amazing. For me personally, FFVII is the greatest game I have ever played.

KotoR 1 and 2 are great games by themselves, especially if you like Star Wars.

These games are pretty well-known, I'd like to plug a rather unknown game as well: Riviera: The Promised Land for the GBA. It is a bit anime-ish, but surprisingly good. It has an aggregate score of 8/10 on Gamerankings, if that means anything to you.

I want to recommend Planescape Torment, as it's the single best single player game I've played, but as there are tons of recommendation of video games and none of sci-fi movie, I'll recommend a few must see classics : 2001, a space odyssey, the old Planet of the ape, Metropolis, Solaris (old version) and Stalker. Be warned though, those are old, and sometimes slow^^
