If you don't care about graphics as much, my two favorite RPG's are Beyond Oasis for the Genesis and Shining Force (2 i think it was) for the genesis as well.

Beyond Oasis was an amazing atmospheric RPG game with a really original setup (even for today's standards). Think a 2D esq Prince of Persia, with Avatar: The Last Airbender thrown in there.

I enjoyed Shining Force 2 (its a tactical battle type game, unlike the zelda style gameplay of BO) for its gameplay and immersive world and lore.

If you don't mind the graphics, and a bit of a learning curve, Dwarf Fortress is an amazing game to just read about, and is pretty fun to learn to play.

For modern RPG's, I would go with the Elder Scrolls series (Skyrim is amazing) and most of the games have been redone in either the Skyrim or Oblivion engines. (There was a Morrowind port to the oblivion engine a while back).

If you like shooters, Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light have a great RPG feeling to them (with Last Light have a morale system). They are more shooter's then RPG, but they fill all of your desires about movies and games as listed above, and they feel great as well.

One of my favorite RPG's of all time has to be Fable: The Lost Chapters (basically an extended version). Every fable game since this one really didn't capture the feel of the game for me. The story telling is great, the world feels large and expansive, the characters are really well thought out, there is a lot of backstory, and the game mechanics have a nice mix of spells, ranged, and melee choices that make the game feel balanced at all levels.

Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3 are amazing

I had a lot of fun with KOTOR.

I liked mass effect 1,2 and 3.

KOTOR1 (knights of the old republic) was amazing.

Wild arms 1/2/5 are really good ones (especially 5 imo).

When I think of something else, something will go here

With the story being a primary concern?

Planescape:Torment definitely.

One of the most wonderful soundtracks in a game ever, an incredible and original story, extremely interesting world / lore. A huge emphasis on dialogue and storytelling, the fighting is completely secondary and mostly optional. The best PC RPG I've ever played, in addition to being the only PC RPG I've really liked.

+ Show Spoiler +

That's my main recommendation. Other good ones would be Valkyrie Profile, Xenogears. Both have interesting stories and good soundtracks, but both are console JRPGs. YU-NO could be interesting though it's not really a game. Really well written, though.

I cannot recommend games like Mass Effect, I found the writing to be completely subpar.

For Final Fantasy, 6 might be the best but I think that the FFs in general, that one included, are rather shallow.
League of Legends EU West, Platinum III | Yousei Teikoku is the best thing that has ever happened to music.

Enjoy.

Add wild arm, valkyrie profile and FF9 to that list and it's complete imo.

The Legacy of Kain series is quite amazing. I usually replay them once a year when nostalgia hits me.
The Metro series is also really good. They're very atmospheric games and they both got a morality system, though it's hidden in the first one, which influence the ending you get.
Morrowind is also a great choice for its RPG elements, but personally I don't enjoy the combat very much.
I've enjoyed the Witcher games, too, but they're not for everybody.

I really like Dark Cloud for the Playstation 2.

What? That's one of the worst games I've ever played. I bought that when I was ~13 years old and never regretted a purchase as much as that one. Terrible, terrible recommendation.

Nobody mentioned Dragon Age? I enjoyed the Thedas universe very much :>

Get Dragon Age: Origins, the gameplay is a bit slow at times but it's an amazing RPG.

Personally I enjoyed Dragon Age II much more than Origins but I think I might be a minority ..

Nobody has recommended Vampire: The masquerade - bloodlines yet?
What is wrong with you people?

Nothing even comes close to this game when it comes to building atmosphere, and it's built on some of the best supernatural lore there is.
From the Ghastly Eyrie I can see to the ends of the world, and from this vantage point I declare with utter certainty that this one is in the bag!

I dont know why so many people failed to read his blog.

SCI-FI RPG.

Literally 1% of these suggestions are sci-fi

What do Diablo and Final Fantasy have to do with science fiction?

Erm, you should probably go back and read the OP. You'll probably feel a little embarassed, but that's ok.

lol at literally 1%. The sentence you quoted can easily be read "(science fiction movies) and (rpg games)". OP listed diablo and final fantasy as series he liked, after all. Now if we were suggesting movies titles and literally 1% were sci-fi then you should be outraged.
