It's not a matter of intelligence, it's a matter of ideals and values. We would all put ourselves at risk for certain things, the only difference is what those things are. This man apparently values putting people like that marine away. Whether it is to punish what he sees as bad people, or if it is to protect the innocent, I do not know.

If that marine has PTSD, then his life is already destroyed. From reading the comments, seems like some people don't know much about PTSD. It's a really severe disorder and it takes a long time to get it under control. Usually, it's due to experiencing such a bad trauma that you just can't cope with flashbacks to it and such so no, it's not easy to get your emotions under control without a lot of counseling and meds:
