My father is DDOSing the entire house

Some time ago, my dad, totally out of nowhere, decided to install a new modem into the house because of two reasons:

1- Our 8 year old modem was working with no problem at all.
2- This modem will be connected to TV as well and we will have our internet and internet TV for free as a single service instead of having them for free as two different services, internet and cable TV (my mom works at the ISP which provides cable TV service as well and company services are free for people who work there).

Ever since he got this new modem installed, the following has happened:

1- Internet randomly stops working
2- Speed is halved during the times that internet works (so bad that I can't even watch twitch streams)
3- When internet stops working, I can't just go and watch TV because TV stops working as well

For the past week, we have been dealing with stupid technical support shit ("Have you tried turning it off and on again", "Oh still doesn't work? Please try turning it off and on once more", "Oh, it still doesn't work? We will come and look at it ASAP" note that they didn't come at all).

When I asked my father why in the world he did such a stupid thing, the answer I got was "Your mom's coworkers got it installed as well, they are happy with it.". Just because other people are happy with that service doesn't mean that we will be happy as well. Then I asked why we are the only people experiencing these stupid issues. The answer I got was that our house has "infrastructure problems" while people living in the same neighbourhood as we do have no "infrastructure problems" at all (some of my mom's coworkers live in the same neighbourhood as we do).

I had more problems with this new modem in a single week than my old modem in 8 years, but no. It had to be changed because this new and free service will be worse than that old and free services. I don't know who had experienced such a stupid thing, but for those who had not, I will tell you two things:

1- I hope you don't
2- It feels like converting your existing free traffic insurance that covers everything it needs to and your existing health insurance that covers everything it needs to into one combo health and traffic insurance that works as long as you don't get sick and your car works and doesn't get damaged.

Before I end my stupid rant:

Dear father,

You're someone who needs help with any device that has buttons and/or needs to get plugged (yep, even cell phone chargers). When your wisdom on technology is at this level, please just don't get new services installed. And please don't take advices from my mom's coworkers because they are unable to even google a concert date which will be found in the first result (they actually asked my mom about that, who then asks me because the concert are is located near my school, then I google it and find it in the first result, then I ask my mom if these people are stupid enough to be unable to google that concert and click on the first result, then my mom rages at me).

Best wishes,
Your son.

1) Put the old one back
2) Find the instructions online to set up the new modem correctly (after all, as you said, you have the uncanny ability to use Google)
3) Stop whining

2) I don't need google to set it up.
1) I would, if I could find the modem. All I need is a cable and an adapter.
3) As you wish.

"Oh, it still doesn't work? We will come and look at it ASAP" note that they didn't come at all

you sure this is 100% accurate?

if they schedule a time slot for a tech to come by, the tech will eventually come if the ISP is any good

After being out of the city for 3-4 days, my dad came back today, heard that the internet problems still persist, got surprised (no shit sherlock?!?), asked my mom if the tech support still haven't come to fix it so yes, it's pretty accurate.

EDIT: ISP is the best one of the entire country.

When I lived with my parents, we had dialup. For 7 years I would connect at 28.8K on a 56K modem. My solution to this problem was move out and get my own Internet. It worked. Don't know how long you plan on staying at home, so you may have to be patient.

I graduate from college in 3 months or some shit like that, so the answer is right after I graduate and find a job to support myself.

Sounds like a plan, speaking of plans, does your dad even have one for the internet LOL. Seems like he is just putting this stuff off.

You'd be surprised how many people do not know how to use google.

Like in my house, I'm the only one who has any sort of google fu, especially for electronics.

Just go to your dad with the reasonable argument of "I know more about tech, give me all the details and passwords, account stuff and let me handle it". You can't expect a busy man with no tech-smarts to be very discerning about the sort of advice he gets. It's up to you to convince him he's not qualified and you can handle it. Be warned, this means you're the one who has to sit on the phone for 5 hours turning the modem on and off and testing stupid shit to convince the ISP there's an actual problem.

I was too lazy to do this when I lived at home, and I suffered horrible, shitty internet for it. Be stronger!

Yeah, you should have googled DDoS.

Virtually everybody who looks at this thread is doing it because they knew you were using "DDoS" wrong.

Yeah that's not DDoS lol

So can you not just switch back to the old modem? If everything you said is correct then it's obviously the modem. Otherwise, sounds like you just need the ISP to send out another tech and ensure that someone is home for the appointment window and that he's actually able to take a look at it and replace your modem if he agrees with you.

Yeah, this never fails to shock me. I can't tell you how many times people tell me "oh no X is happening" and I tell them to google a string of 4 or 5 vaguely relevant words and do what the results say, or end up doing that for them over 2 minutes.

I think this is a good idea. If you offer to sort all of this out for your dad, and do all the legwork involved so he can simply forget about it, it is likely that he would appreciate it in the end. For him, this simply is not a priority (the internet, shaky as it is, might be good enough for what he needs it for).
