I am writing this from my hotel room in Seattle, right after just having interviewed with Microsoft for the Software Development Engineer and Test position. I always start off the with results, I got the job. Yay!

So a couple months ago, I entered into Microsoft Hackathon, which is some programming competition. I came out in first place, so a recruiter was interested in taking my resume. Couple days later they wanted to give me a phone interview. I did fairly shitty on the phone interview, but I guess they felt differently, and invited me to Redmond for the second round interview.

So yesterday afternoon I flew into Seattle. It's all expenses paid including flight, food, and everything which is awesome. The hotel is just gorgeous. They take you around in a limousine. They pamper you so hard, which is so great. Last night I went out for a steak, for lunch today I went to a seafood place, and tonight I'm still deciding what I want to eat. Man, Microsoft really knows how to spoil its interviewees.

So my interviews started at 8:00 am this morning. I interviewed with 4 different people. I was definitely a bit shaky on some of the questions. The would open each interview with an icebreaker like "why do you want to work at Microsoft", then they would start hammering you with coding questions and puzzle questions. I got most of the right, but a couple of them I just botched, oh well. If you are interviewing with Microsoft in the future and want to know exactly what they ask and what they look for, you can feel free to shoot me a pm.

After my 4 interviews, I was fairly nervous because I had no idea if they liked me or not. I didn't completely bomb the interviews, but I didn't do great either. After lunch, the HR person gave me the news and told me I got an offer. Man I was so excited.

So here I am now in my hotel room typing up a blog on TL.

So right now, it's 2pm here, and I want suggestions from you guys on what I should do tonight. I really want to go around the city sightseeing and stuff but I'm not sure where I want to go. Are there any good museums in Seattle?

The science-fiction museum attached as an annex to the Experience Music Project is pretty cool, if small. It's worth walking over to the city center and looking at the building, which is crazy, at the very least.

What seafood restaurant did you eat at? If you're on expenses, you should eat at Elliott's on the Pier. That is some primo shit right there.

edit: also I recommend finding a place down by the water where you can walk out a bit on a pier and look back at the city, the skyline is really beautiful from the bay.

edit: and if you like beer, I would recommend coming up here to Capitol Hill (across I-5 above downtown) and checking out the Elysian Brewery, some really fantastic local micro.

Its funny that to celebrate you want to go out to a museum, I would be trying to go out and live it up. I guess that the difference in someone like me, and someone who gets a job with Microsoft.

Congratz man!

As for going out, the Seattle Art Museum isn't bad at all. I think last time I went there was a flying car exhibit. Was pretty cool.

That's really impressive man. Be happy. Fucking Microsoft. Even if you get fired in a day, enjoy being able to put it on your resume for the rest of your life!

As for the sightseeing, if you can't find something, just walk around downtown until something catches your eye - most of the worthwhile museums/culture sights are always downtown.
You mean I just write stuff here and other people can see it?

Congrats on the awesome offer! May I ask how you developed your skills to the level needed to win a Hackathon?

Thank you for your suggestions. After I read your post, I went to the EMP straight away. That museum was excellent, and the science fiction museum was awesome as well. Afterwards I went to see the Space Needle and the glass museum and both were awesome as well. I dined in a place called Sea Star since it was close to my hotel and had great reviews. I ordered the steelhead since it was a local fish, and it tasted so good.

I'm not that great at programming, but I gained a lot of the required skills competing in math contests. The thought process of math contests and programming contests are the exact same basically.

Also thanks everyone for the congrats, this is an amazing day for me since Microsoft has been my goal for a very long time, and I'm so happy to have achieved my biggest ambition.

I second the Seattle Art Museum, it always has a nice collection. I've never visited the sci-fi museum but I've heard it's interesting, the music section is fun too. The view from the space needle is great as well.

Congrats on getting accepted!

What is a hackathon exactly? I hear about them all the time but its conflicting details. I thought you had to "hack" together a program from some api's and best thing wins

A Hackathon is a common name for programming competitions. They vary greatly in rules and styles.
