In short, they are fine, you would never notice anything unless you act really out of line. No one will hate you just because you are Chinese. In fact, if you don't speak and act out of line, they'll just think you are Japanese. Japanese people will almost always appear friendly, because it's the polite thing to do; sometimes this is genuine, but a lot of times it's phony, but that really doesn't matter as you wouldn't know.

I'm Chinese Canadian and I've lived in Tokyo for over two years now, and I think it's swell. I've never felt like I was alienated from the crowd. Things might be a little different if I were poor and didn't speak English though, which is the case for a lot of the Chinese people living here.

Well my older cousin brother said the same thing as well.
He worked there as a Mitsubishi engineer.

Japanese can understand English well?
I heard from my cousin they aren't proficient in English.
Koreans has a slightly better understanding on the English language though.

For the everyday stuff, you need to speak Japanese; for more complex things, most places will offer services in English.

Even though the general populace is terrible at speaking, English still goes a very long way in Japan, especially in large cities like Tokyo.

I visited Seoul for four days in the past, I didn't think the general public spoke more English than Tokyo. I recall speaking a lot of Japanese in Korea.

I think Japanese people speak English pretty well. The problem lies in their accent, it's just so difficult to hear.

there is a lot of bias in japan against koreans and chinese. there is also an enormous amount of recent conflict between china and korea on the one hand, and japan on the other. like most countries, this tends to be more focused in the older generations, not the college students, young-adults, etc. however, saying that it does not exist is delusional.

some examples from my experience:

- i dated a japanese girl who was 1/16 korean. the family refused to tell the younger brother he was 1/16 korean because (a) he didn't like koreans, and (b) they were concerned he would be ridiculed for it. i was told point blank not to let him know he is korean.
- i taught english to middle aged women. they told me straight out that chinese were criminals and they wished that the government would exclude them from japan.

if you think thats bad, you should see what they say about blacks.

japanese wont do anything directly about it usually. they wont say anything to you, but i wouldnt be surprised if they act passively aggressive towards you. i wouldnt let it stop me from going to japan if i was a young korean/chinese, but full disclosure, its not all unicorns and rainbows like people are saying.

Are the Senkaku islands a big deal over there right now? I'm visiting family in China and now it's all over the news, and from what I can see there's little about it in the Western media.

What was your favorite area/island so far? Personally I would really love to see Hokkaido.

Also since Senkaku dispute was already mentioned I wonder which territorial dispute is seen as the most serious in Japan?
It would seem to me to be the Kuril island dispute because it is biggest in area, the history of it (no peace-treaty between Japan and Russia after WW2, they are technically still at war ), the Japanese fisherman killed by Russian border patrols and Moscows increased military deployments to the islands. Yet this dispute seems to hardly get any mention in the media here.

I'm a Swedish guy in Japan atm and have been for about half a year now.

The conflict is certainly in the news, but it doesn't really seem to affect the general Japanese population. (As you would expect.) On the internet though there is a lot of discussion and even hate by the nationalists.

I currently work in a place with around 7 people that come from China, Hongkong and Taiwan. I've talked to them about this since it interests me and they say it doesn't really affect them at all.

If you walk around Tokyo or any major city you will hear Chinese spoken all the time so obviously people are open about it.

I've been traveling all around Japan and worked with numerous foreigners (I'm volunteering), and the consensus seems to be that, no matter where your from, what the color of your skin is, if you act like a decent human being, you will be treated the same.

Though, it is true that many Japanese do sometimes see foreigners in a stereotypical way. This though in my opinion is simply due to inexperience with dealing and interacting with foreigners. They simply only know what the television shows them.

Have I in my 6 months experienced or witnessed any racism or discrimination? Nope.

I've lived here for a year now and I can say I've witnessed racism/discrimination multiple times. I've gone to multiple izakayas and bars where I've been either ignored completely or told no foreigners and pointed to the door. I also have a lot of Japanese born Korean friends that have to hide the fact that they are Korean from their jobs to avoid never being able to promote and constant harassment.

I take it with a grain of salt though, I understand that as a foreigner there are a lot of old fashioned Japanese that are set in their ways and can't hold it against them, I just try to be respectful either way. I know a lot of foreigners have caused some bad problems in Japan and the media likes to blow it up which makes the people more biased perhaps.

All in all I really love this country and don't have any desire to return to America, though there is evidence of obvious racism there are many things in this country which are far superior and make it a more enjoyable place for me to live.
