It makes me wonder why people don't trust their medics more. I suppose it could be uncomfortable allowing someone else to basically be responsible for your life, letting the breathe for you, but still.

Have you ever had any experience where the patients you're trying to save or aid as an EMT are utterly impossible to work with as they refuse to cooperate or doubt your abilities?

I've actually experienced being in an ambulance, remember the vivid moment when they strapped me to the apparatus from head to toe as I was still under 18 at the time of the accident. I was quite banged up but still conscious, adrenaline and the shock kicked in so the exorbitant amounts of pain was not as severe until after I got to the hospital. In the end, the MD told me I was really close to losing my left eye, aside from other injuries I sustained.

Thanks once again for the share!

Man that image of "going once going twice" and the feeling of gratefulness that washes over when you finally find a treatment method that works are so, so vivid >.<

Another nice read from Snet.

In my experience with medical professionals I've essentially nodded my head and gone with whatever they suggest, it hasn't failed me yet. I'm quite surprised somebody would object to having breathing assistance, but I've never been in that position so I have no room to talk, it must've been quite an intense experience for her...

some people feel bad, if they can't help someone, which is bullshit.

if someone declines treatment, it's their choice to make it worse or basically kill themselves in some situations.

I had to treat a Jehova's Whitness once. He was barely conscious, but was still able to use the last bit of energy to:

- tell us, that we can't give him a blood transfusion.
- pray

-.-

needless to say it was entirely his own fault that he died. My partner had quite a lot of trouble with it.
I personally didn't really care. If you are stupid enough to deny medical treatment, I'm sorry but you're not worth my effort.
There might be a kid I can safe. When you decline my help I'll say "Sorry to hear that" and turn around right away.

I think the first two or three times I tried to convince someone, it doesn't work though.
At least when religion is the reason, you shouldn't bother talking to them about how stupid they are.

If someone is just doubting my abilities I found saying "DO YOU WANT TO LIVE?" in a decisice manner, basically always helps.

Yeah, how a religion can be valued more than your own life just baffles me... Poor guy is really disillusioned.

Religion is definitely an impossibly powerful gamechanger when it comes to living. Religion is what makes the Middle East impossible to quash. It's also responsible for a lot of evils inflicted on both itself and others.

So nice to discover your blog as I'm in 2nd year in critical care specialisation :D
It's good when you can hold the patient with a CPAP treatment, such a relief to not have to worry anymore about that moment when your wondering "Do I have to intube him or is it gonna work"

This never happened to me but I know it can... Really dont know how I'd feel about a patient who would refuse my help in an severe and acute situation just for religious belief (not concidering ppl who will die soon anyway like cancerous metastatic patient with no therapy left). I'd guess I'd get pissed in an "OMG are you retarded bro?!!!" way...

Anyway 5/5 blog, I'll be waiting for your next one Snet

What exactly was her actual problem? Maybe I missed it in the post, but I'm curious as to what was the cause of the issue was.

EDIT: I've had panic attacks before and have refused help to people who tried to help me when I felt like I was unable to breath at all, that sensation is incredibly scary.

The feeling of impending death, as well as others (unknown people) appearing is incredible.. It's very hard to think rationally in such a situation.

I'd have thought because of the success rate of something like that. Please do explain.

Honestly I thought this blog was going to be about economics. Still great story though!

His last blog post was explaining that the stories he tells seem consistently dramatic because he only tells the ones that make exciting stories. I'd assume the title means 'this is one of those cases that became something more than mundane'.

Just from the story itself and use of CPAP and Nebulized medications, I am guessing either heart failure (she had a reported issue with hypertension), asthma/COPD (not quite sure because the breath sounds werent listed), or some sort of pulmonary infection.

My friend went to a patient who was a semi-pro bodybuilder that ended up charging him like a bull after coming out of a seizure, took his girlfriend to explain what had happened and that they were from EMS and here to help...
