Why Terlingua? Texas is known for its unique culture and larger-than-life historical tales. However it is hard to appreciate said history while living in the extremely urban DFW metro area. Sure, I've been to the stockyards and I've visited my grandparent's farm out in the panhandle for several 4th's of july, but there is always a very strong modern presence that kinda disconnects you from the full realization of what this area must have been like 200 years ago. Terlingua on the other hand has remained mostly untouched by civilization. Of course you can find modern technology if you look hard enough and have the money, but it is mostly populated by people who are perfectly happy with living completely off the power grid. There are no "modern rules" you must follow to live, you either make it or you don't. Community is a much stronger force in such places, and that's one of the things I'm most looking forwards to. Life in a place like that may be more physically demanding, but I believe I'll be happier overall without all the arbitrary restrictions I've been following my whole life. And of course, there is the scenery. If you've ever been to an area where you can't see any presence of human life for miles, you get a very profound sense of the true nature of the planet you're living on.
So what will I do when I get there? I'm a fast learner and I have no doubt that I'll be able to learn what's needed to adapt to whatever circumstances I'll be putting myself in. As long as I remain open minded and willing to learn/work, I don't think I'll have any problems.
I have no idea how long I plan on spending out there.....I will try to post my experiences whenever I can, but those times could be months and months in between or likely none at all.
