Well, god damnit. I actually like the Beatles now. (listened to the whole white album)

I used to think my highschool friends were just trying to be cool and hip or something, so i would just ignore anything related to the beatles, which is too bad because the beatles are in fact quite good. Its incredible how many popular rock songs ive listened to over the years take liberties or just plain rip off the beatles. most notably for me was offsprings Why dont you get a job? from the beatles Obla - Di - Oblada. (the chorus is just different words same melody.) even little guitar riffs at the end of some songs are like "hey thats a goddamn nirvana song." or this band or that band.

Now its not like i havent listened to respectable music before, i still like nine inch nails and radiohead and incubus - despite them having similar sounding songs, but literally this has opened my eyes.

THAT SAID - i still would like to get one thing clear. Were "The Rutles" just a cover band of the beatles or did they come out before - because on Youtube theres this song + Show Spoiler +
and many others that have 1962 or before which is before the beatles yet on pretty much every other site it lists them being basically a comedy band which does the weird al approach but to beatles songs. http://www.rutles.org/rstory.html maybe theres just a lot of trolling, cause thats about the only thing thats making me a little skeptical of them.

but i still dont think they are better than obviously the classical composers or even a few bands now days, they just sound so timeless and definetly deserve the hooblah they get. what album should i listen to next? ive just started abbey road.

it took me a long time to appreciate how great the beatles actually were.

this is what you do next. take mushrooms or lsd and listen to sergeant pepper lonely hearts club band album in its entirety. then listen to magical mystery tour in its entirety.

this is when you will truly appreciate the beauty of the beatles and the musical genius they actually possess. not to mention they were writing this kind of music at a time when it was completely original and unheard of. amazing

those two albums are less "pop" than earlier beatles stuff and truly shows off their talent. and dont get me wrong its still just as good sober, u just might miss a few details in the sound

I don't know about the dates. But I always had the impression that The Rutles were just a cover band. Perhaps they were a band before under a different name? Or maybe the name similarity was pure chance and they thought it would be funny to parody Beatles songs.

Yeah the beatles are great. I also used to hate Queen but Freddie Mercury is just superb. Maybe some of these things are sort of an acquired taste so many timeless classics from then.

I am a HUGE Beatles fan. My wife and my bedroom is covers in Beatles posters. As for your question, the Rutles were just a parody band by Neil Innes and the guys from Monty Python that didn't come about until the mid 70s. In fact, the Rutles movie is just a hilarious parody of the Beatles history and their songs are all just parodies.
The songs were like "Hold My Hand" instead of "I Wanna Hold Your hand" and "Love Life" which was a parody of "All You Need is Love." As for that video, it is part of their fictional history. They did not form until 1975. Watch the movie of the Rutles, it is hilarious.

Any other questions or comments about the Beatles, I will talk Beatles music all day long. Respond on here or feel free to PM me.

I made reference to my love for The Beatles in this blog if you are interested in reading: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=239926

As for albums and getting into the Beatles, the White Album is good (Dear Prudence is like one of my absolute favs.), and it was also the album that got me into them, but as for songwriting and music interest, I always prefer "Rubber Soul" and "Help!" I section their albums into different stages of their writing career and those early-mid albums are the best (Help! Rubber Soul, Revolver, into Sgt. Pepper.) Lately though Abbey Road has been on my player a ton because it was where George Harrison really came into his own. He wrote the two best songs on that album and two of my best Beatles song all together in "Something" and "Here Comes the Sun."

The Beatles are great i love them to.But there are others out there just as great to say at least like Creedence Clearwater Revival,The Doors,Jimi Hendrix,Canned Heat,Dire Straits,Eric Clapton,ZZ Top,The Rolling Stones,Queen,The Monkeys,The Who,The Guess Who,The Animals and the list could go on and on and on...

While I love CCR, Canned Heat (They played the old theater I worked at before...), DS, Claptop, The Guess Who, the other bands, The Doors, The Stones, Queen, The Who, and The Animals are all better, but in the end the only other one of this list that comes close for me to The Beatles is Jimi, but The Beatles still win. =)

I went through those phases...for a long time I was Pink Floyd addict, then a Zepplin, then Jimi, then whatever, but The Beatles have always been there. When I listen to "Day in the Life," "In my Life," or "Revolution" and I completely convinced they were the most amazing group of musicians ever assembled.

Oh, hi EatThePath. =)

Even I as a die hard technical death metal fan love the Beatles. There's just something about their music that's catchy and ingenious and original. Even though it's poppy as shit I always find little details in their music that makes their songs deeper than your average pop band. It gives me the same feeling like metal. Amazing.

This is damn right. They were so ahead of their times. They are not only credited for changing music in styles and songwriting, but for basically creating the music video and the album as an entire entity, not just a collection of songs. The Beatles are the fucking best! =)

Sorry, I just get excited and overflowing with Beatles love when I see other fans. In fact, because of these posts I am blasting Sgt. Pepper right now.

The Beatles are great. It's not my favorite band, but they are up there. They were obviously incredibly talented, and they were pretty much the first real band, who wrote their own songs. They are very influential for their rhytms and song structure. If you listen to Rolling Stones, especially early songs like Satisfaction, you can tell that they were trying to imitate the Beatles. One of their strengths was also their sense of humour, which was extra noticeable on the White Album. Just listen to Wild Honey Pie. Its sole purpose was to troll the listeners, and nothing like that had been released at the time.

Anyway, for the record. If you need to take drugs to appreciate The Beatles, Pink Floyd or whatever, you're severely lacking in imagination.

Non said you need to, it just "enhances the experience".

Personally I started listening to them as one of my first "rock bands", after a while i found out more and more band that i liked much better but every 1 year or so i come back to them an realize how much more i like their songs and how "refined" they are compared to other bands, not to mention how much the other songs are "inspired" from them.

A good strategy means leaving your opponent room to make mistakes

I am not a drug user at all, hell, it is hard to get me to take a damn headache pill even, but I do think that there may be an argument in saying that if musicians created music on drugs, then one can say that when they created it, they heard it through the lens of drug use, and therefore can only be properly experienced through drug use as well. While I am not saying that is true, there is an argument for it at least. Also, let's add this to the mix:

Great joke, but the fact is that while Ringo sang Yellow Submarine, Paul wrote it just to have a silly song for Ringo to sing.

I think the band is great, but overrated. People drool over every single Beatles song even though a lot of it is quite shitty indeed. I am the walrus and yellow submarine are both terrible. Which is a bit sad, since a lot of people probably don't hear their amazing material because of crap being lifted to the sky as"genious".

Stuff like While My Guitar Gently Weeps, amazing.

LoL. Guitar is awesome, and I agree that there are some songs that are overrated and don't make much sense, but sometimes, like in the case of Walrus, it is not supposed to really make sense but yet people try to piece together meaning out of the nonsense, and that in itself is part of what makes it interesting to me at least. Yellow Submarine is a silly song, but you know, kids love it, it is catchy, and there is at least something to say for that. Neither of those two songs though are where their true talent and brilliance lie. It is more in songs like "Guitar Gently Weeps," "Across the Universe," "Revolution," and "Day in the Life."

I will not go as far as to call their other works crap, but I will admit that they were not always genius.

In general they are (way) overrated... BUT a few/some of their song are strokes of genius that influenced tons of bands after (which they temselves probably often stole from some rather unknown black musicians before, as most white "greats" did)...

Imho Queen is not getting the attention they really deserve(d), those guys, every one of them were amazing.

While I love Queen and think that Freddy was bay far one of the greatest modern male singers (along with Roy Orbison,) they had some influence and a ton of talent, but nothing to the level of the changes and influences of the Beatles I think. I think that a lot of people don't realize that is was not just their music, it was the right time and place and they were so far ahead of their time in riff creation, in rock music structure as well as style, and in marketing and packaging their brand. It is weird, but just little things that no one had done before, like use guitar feedback as a musical device as on "I Feel Fine." They are credited with creating that by accident, liking the sound, and now feedback is a standard device used in a ton of modern rock.

Sorry, I am just a huge Beatles geek. I understand that many people don't care for them as I do, but I have turned so many non-Beatles fans into Beatles fans that I get geeked out talking about them. Ha.
