It's a tough life. You've got to take shit and give shit. Sometimes you give too much shit and something explodes inside you. Sometimes you take shit the wrong way and you have to take a few steps back so you can correct your course. This is what all things are like, and if they aren't worth it you back out and do something else. Some things are worth it, though. Some things are just the only thing you have to take and give a shit about at all. In my opinion Brood War is the former. Nobody wants to feel like you're doing them a favour when they help you get into the community and learn the game and enjoy the scene. Some people even find it a little offensive. You will get shit, and if you don't have the charisma or attitude to persevere and keep going, you'll back out and lose something beautiful. You might even blame the fact that you have to go through so much shit to enjoy it, think that if it were so good it would be delivered to you on a silver platter. Problems with Windows 7? That's shit. Problems with BM members of the community? That's shit. Problems with catching up on the learning curve? That's shit. It's shit every single person has to go through to play this game. Want to find VODs, replays, and guides? Better learn how to use a computer and a search engine while you're at it. These days it’s so easy. Usually people will even gladly help you when you ask instead of spend your own time figuring things out. People who think it’s worth it figure it out for themselves. How do you become fast? Become smart? Become skilled? Become quick with intelligent decisions? My friend, you go through shit. You go through it humbly, you learn from it, you become a better person. Don't be so entitled... Not everyone is gonna be nice in your life, and it's time you learned to catch a fish instead of just asking for it. You'll enjoy it so much more that way. It's nothing to be ashamed about, it's just life ;p

You know playing video games over so many years, this is the hardest lesson I have ever learned. I used to think, if I show my friend how to play my favirote game, show them the tricks of the trade, teach them the best way to play, that they would love it just as much as I did... but they didn't. I thought maybe I'm not a good enough teacher, maybe I need to learn more intuitive ways to show them how to play the game, spoon feed them bits of information and let them fill in the blanks, they would certainly love the game as much as I did... but they didn't. I even went as far as just asking them to play with me and do what ever they wanted, and I would instinctively carry the way whether I meant to or not, hoping they would learn to love the game if they just played it enough.... but they didn't. I had finally learned this lesson very recently, and realized how hurtful it was; there was nothing I could do to get my friends to play my favirote game and love it as much as I did, nothing at all. Without the struggle, and countless hours of effort, they would never realize how special my favirote game was, and I am powerless to do anything about it. The same holds true not only for games, but for just about anything. I hate feeling helpless, as I am a person who firmly believes that with enough effort one can achieve almost anything.

I didn't learn that from chef, I learned it on my own, as I fought against it all the way through. Chef's blog talked about the topic, so I decided to share my experience.
