Just a short one today. The idea is I'm ticking off all of the video games I've ever played, and some of them, like this one I don't have a lot to talk about - but it's the remembering that matters. Really enjoyed the discussion on Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy yesterday.

Galactix

Game: Galactix
Platform: PC
Release Year: 1992
Stephen's Rating: 5/10

Galactix was my first shoot-em-up scrolling shooter.

Basic Plot

I can't actually remember much about it... There was an enemy, a guy who looked like he had brains for a face and tubes sticking out of him. His fleet was on its way to destroy your planet, so you get in a ship to go stop him.

Gameplay

The game was a classic shoot-em-up scroller. One mechanic which might be unique for this game was a "claw" which you had to use to grab power-ups. Using the claw was an art in itself. Power-ups would provide you with better weapons.

Taking on a boss. You can see the upgraded weapons.

Positives

At the time it felt really polished and looked good too. Definitely a solid shoot-em-up.

Negatives

The game was way too hard for my 8-9 year old brain to fathom.

Memorable Moments

Just the claw reaching out to grab a power-up before it glided off screen...

****
But I'm off creep... and so I slow down, what are hellions doing here? I don't belong here...

Hmm, never been a huge schmup fan. I feel like once you've played a few of them you've played all of them, if you know what I mean.

Good review though, I'll keep my eye out for more of your reviews ^_^

Lol, that's an abscure one, I had to do a little searching to find it. It was developed and published by Mountain King Studios, who were then know as Cygnus Studios; I thought I vaguely recogized the name. Apparently they were the original developer for Strife, which later fell through when the Cygnus founder quite so Velocity ended up porting the whole thing. It looks like their best known game was Raptor: Call of the Shadows, though I've never played nor heard of it. Goes to show just how expansive the Dos games library really is.

I like the way the walls go out. Gives you an open feeling. Firefly's a good design. People don't appreciate the substance of things. Objects in space. People miss out on what's solid.

I was just thinking that the visuals reminded me of Raptor: Call of the Shadows (which I'm in the process of creating a Youtube episode about). Yeah, very obscure! It was one of the games that came with my first computer (a 386 with Windows 3.1) along with Crystal Caves. Too hard for my 8 year old mind to play

I think I had the shareware version of that game, it was pretty bad...
At that time(1998) I used to play Raptor and Radix instead of that one.
