OK. I really want to go to MLG Anaheim. Kespa, hots preview, xsixsuppy, epic win. etc. But I can't figure out a good way to travel. It's close to 400 miles, and a 6:30 drive. (Bay Area CA to Anaheim)
I don't want to spend several hundred dollars on gas and drive. Just so expensive.
Flying is 100 dollars per direction, and then I'd need transit from Burbank/Orange County Airport.
Taking a train is 65 per, but it doesn't work, flat out. Like 11 hours each way, and it's primarily buses.
Amtrak isn't this pro
I probably can't convince my parents to let me take some school off on the Friday it starts, so the only way to get there at all on time the first day would be to fly. But again, that's very expensive.
I might be able to skip a bit of school, considering it is so close to the end of the school year, and in an AP class. But parents...
In any case, I'm trying to figure out good forms of transport. Maybe carpooling? Does anybody know of good ways to travel the north-south corridor on the cheap, quickly. I know I'm asking too much, but my profound googling has left me with nothing.

Whats stopping you from telling your parents you will go to school, and that a friend will drop you off at airport after school, but actually just skipping class and going to airport?
You think they will actually go to your school to see if you are there?

Check the student union at the local colleges. I know many times they have a ride board where you can catch a ride with people going that way. If you're able to chip in for gas, I'm sure you can find someone making the drive.

there are no sites where people advertise empty seats in their cars in the US?
here, we have sites like http://www.mitfahrzentrale.de/ and http://www.mitfahrgelegenheit.de/ (both are only for european countries)
People sign up, and enter their trips: Where they are going, when, how many seats available, smoker/non smoker, if they are looking for someone with a driving license to share the driving, stops inbetween they are willing to take and how much money they would like to get. You contact them via the website, supplying your mobile number, and if they still have seats available, they'll call or sms you to agree on a pick up time and location.
I have used it a couple of times, my brother does it all the time, very few problems.

I live 700 miles from Anaheim, splitting with a buddy its gonna be $75 per person, round trip in gas. (toyota echo) Driving lets us stay at cheaper hotel further from convention center with no taxis. You should look for a carpool from the bay area or somewhere on the way...

You think they will actually go to your school to see if you are there? Because my school is rich and white, and they will actually email my parents if I'm not there last period.

Amtrak does really suck, it's like $44 round trip just to go from Milwaukee to Chicago and they're only like 60 miles apart. I'd hate to think how much it would cost without the government subsidy.

I hope you can find a way! I have to take a 6.5 hour flight from Boston ... but so worth it. :-) Hope to see you there, friend.

I live 2700 miles from Anaheim. Driving is 44 hours, without stops, or a 5 hour flight. Flight is cheaper and shorter, obvious decision for me. There's bound to be a way there. If you were able to fly to LAX on Thursday I'd say we could split cab fare to Anaheim or whatever (if I end up going, sooo close to getting final word on that) but since you can't...well...that's out.
I'm seeing SF to LAX round trip for about $200 on kayak.com. Pricey, but if it's your only option....

I take it you don't live in the US, otherwise you would know what he meant by this.

I think it's pretty well recognized that schools in the inner city which are majority African American tend to be underfunded and poorly run, and few states are willing to address their drastic underperformance. Further, issues such as gang activity and crime often distract schools from issues like tardyness. It's sad,but very few if anyone seems to care about the students in these schools. Whereas schools in the suburbs or richer neighborhoods which are majority caucasian, then to be well funded and well run and actively enforce stronger academic standards. There's nothing racist about pointing out the obvious disparities.

And yes there is a major difference between low-income schools and high-income schools and that attitudes taken by the educators of each of those schools. I just thought it was strange that OP had to say "rich AND white," and not just rich or private, or "if absent my school emails the parents to notify" instead of tossing out "rich and white" to qualify the schools actions.
Either way OP, best of luck finding a way to Anaheim

Haha. I mean, it's a public school. I think I just said it because that's how my friends and I think of it. All these ghetto kids that are actually driving parent owned bmw.

There should be some sort of "MLG - Looking to split hotel and/or car costs" thread. I live in Portland, OR but I am looking for people to split hotel costs with.

OK... I'll make one tonight.
