I'm wondering if I'm gonna say this too easily, but I think I just had the most enjoyable meal of my life.

It's a very peaceful day in my house, the shutters on the windows are lowered because it's almost 30 degrees C outside already, so the light is not too intense inside. I'm currently alone in the house, and it's gonna stay so for a few hours so I'm in the chill mode.

So, I went to have lunch, a simple one really, some soup, boiled potatoes & meatballs (I guess that's what you call it in English) and some tomato salad. So eat the soup and go on to the rest of it. As I'm eating, I feel a small underlying sense of struggle, like I'm not totally relaxed. I quickly get a memory flash from the childhood and learning to eat with fork, knife, spoon, managing my hands correctly to accurately get stuff in my mouth without getting anything dirty. I also get a flashback from a documentary about a guy first discovering an amazon tribe and feeding them rice and also trying to teach them to use the spoon.
They give it a shot, but they quickly see there's no point, its faster and, from the look in their eyes, more fun to eat with your fingers, shoving them into your mouth and licking them fully on the way back.

So I say fuckit, fork lands on the table, and I'm all over the food manually now. Feels good, feels real, feels like an unnecessary obstacle has been removed between my dear food and me.
It's my food and I'm gonna eat it my way. My hands are clean anyways, and I'll wash them again after I'm done, so now I'm enjoying. First I'm doing it cautiously, with two fingers a piece of potato by a piece of potato, then some meat etc. Next thing you know, I'm grabbing stuff in my fists, squeezing it, sinking teeth into bulges of meat, licking my hands, pretending meat is a soap and just playing around like a 2 year old.
There's really something magical in being one with the food this way, we've been doing the fork shit for too long so we forgot.
The food is warm in your hands, it's feels great. Yes you know it's warm, because you remember your tongue confirming it, but your tongue could also taste the cold steel that delivers the food to it. And it does not like the steel.

It's like giving my inner child another shot at just living carefree and doing the natural.

I don't remember I've had this much fun eating in forever. Just felt so right. haha I wonder how the people are gonna respond, I can definitely see many different reactions hehehe

---
Now that my experience is shared, I wanna talk a little about some logic behind the eating tools:

Their use made perfect sense up until recently, a few centuries ago people didn't have running water, they would come back from their fields with their dirty hands and have all sorts of bacteria, parasites etc inserted into their body by eating with the fingers.

So the first step was probably using these tools so that you don't touch the food before it goes into your mouth.

The second step was personal hygiene, washing hands before eating etc.
However, with the further development of hygienic stuff, the first step becomes obsolete. There's no reason to use the tools now. I'm not taking into account social expectations, because that's no reason in itself.

I think nowadays the default should be to eat with your hands, and be served a wet hygienic paper towel that would clean the grease and everything after you're done eating.

Do you know how good it feels to just sink your teeth into the meat you're supposed to fork around your plate? (hamburgers don't count) To toss the potatoes around from hand to hand before rubbing them into your tongue? Feels great, so do yourself a favor and eat with your fingers when you get a cool chance, you may post the 'results' here if you wanna.

I kinda had the idea how the blog should look as I started writing, but I forgot what the plan was, so hopefully this turns out decent enough.

Take care <3

Hmmmmm, I shall consider this proposal. This I already have all the 'tools' so it would be wasted money.

This is the norm for me and most people in the country. Yes, it does feel better specially in eating chicken. You can get all the meat in the nooks and crannies with ease.

I always eat with my hands when at home to be honest, and always wash both before and after I eat. In a restaurant it's a whole different thing and I don't want to embarrass myself or my friends by "acting like a Neanderthal", as people say. At home, though, it's perfectly fine and much more satisfying!

99% of the time i actually want to use Fork/Knive?
Just for stuff like meat around bones you use your hands (+finger food obviously)?...

But thats like common sense?
I don't see the appeal to have fat on your fingers/hands if it's not necessary...

Heh.

OP: That sounds frickin awesome. Glad you had fun!

On a sidenote, my mom eats french fries with a fork, which is absolutely not how you do it in America (and probably anywhere else, for that matter).

People eating french fries with forks just want to watch the world burn.

Unless there is alot of sauce over them, then you can use a plastic fork!

If you have a chance, I really recommend trying Ethiopian food. Delicious stuff, to be eaten with your hands. And the spices, oh, the spices. Great, now I'm hungry

If you define 'clean' as a binary thing, they're not clean. But on an analogue scale, they're clean enough after being washed.

I seldom do that but eating steaks with your hands is awesome. You just feel... manly.

However i dont consider most dishes good for eating with your hands, even if you leave out the hassle of washing your hand before and after meals. Maybe bitesized potatoes, but i wouldnt eat pasta or rice with my hands. Also i wouldnt recommend that people start doing this. Seeing how some of my friends eat is just plain disgusting, even if they use "tools", their manner of treating food certainly doesnt look civilized. People have a hard time discerning the public and private sphere and what you do in your own home you will probably take with your when you are not. People forget themselves easily...

And for the record, eating fowl with your hands isnt bad etiquette. People just lack knowledge, and hence believe everything should be eaten with some sort of utensil. Table manners are important.

Edit:
Great read btw

For some reason, I just got a flash in my head of that episode of Seinfeld where Mr. Pitt is eating the candy bar with a knife and fork. Lol.

Honestly, eating utencils were invented for a reason. It's so you can eat your food without getting your hands all dirty and messy. Also makes some things infinetly more easy, like eating soup or salad. I far prefer to use a fork, even for food that generally doesn't require it such as french fries. I like keeping my hands clean.

I take it they don't have Buffalo Wild Wings in your country? This is pretty much the norm in the US for any type of bbq.

I like the way the walls go out. Gives you an open feeling. Firefly's a good design. People don't appreciate the substance of things. Objects in space. People miss out on what's solid.

I always eat with hands, but that's no surprise considering I eat indian food. However, I do eat stuff with spoons/forks etc when needed. Mainly hands though.

nope we don't have that

When I visit US one day, I'll visit every single restaurant/fast-food chain you've got there. Burger King, Buffalo Wild Wings, KFC + I guess at least 5 other big ones that I don't even know now. I only get to taste some USA in McDonald's here hehehe

There's an amazing feeling you get when eating with your hands as if you were self sufficient. Idk, for me food tastes better like that IF you wash your hands thoroughly beforehand. I hate eating when I have an inkling that my hands may be dirty..
