I realize a LOT of people think Gunnar's are completely useless and a waste of money and I respect that opinion. But I get VERY bad headaches from staring at my 23 inch glaring monitor in the dark for hours and I know the gunnars will help with that, at least a little bit.

My question is for anyone who has used them, is there a difference between the Steelseries Scope / Desmo? Or is it just looks? Any other ones I should look at from different brands?

Spending 80$ is better than having a kidney failure later in my life due to the massive amounts of Ibuprofen I'm taking cause of these headaches..

Is there no way to change the gamma settings/ other lighting of your monitor/ in your room to help ease your headache? I feel like that's a really serious issue x.x

Also, iNcontroL would probably know plenty about the Gunnar topic, no? I think he wears them

The lamp + power bill from the lamp will cost more in the long run.

Depends on how much the lamp costs, how much electricity costs, and how much time the lights have to be on.

So possibly the Gunnars.

Maybe even who is paying the electricity (and it would take a while if you turned on your lights for 3-4 hours a night). The thing is though when do you turn on your lights? Most rooms shouldn't need them at all during the day. I'm pretty sure even with the gunnars, its probably not good to look at screens in the dark for hours. Me I turn on the lights at night time, when I'm in a room, dadgummit I must be insane.

I'm an animation student and i was literally spending 14+ hours a day in front of a screen during the ~2weeks of my finals last quarter. I was already clocking in long hours before that because of other projects. A week and a half before the due date of my last project, I wake up with my eye hurting. I had gotten 8 hours of sleep the night before. I didnt have time to ease the strain on my eyes. So I decided to pick up some Gunnars because I was desperate and honestly it worked.

When I was exhausted, it felt like my eyes had pillows on them. People think that Gunnars only dim the screen and such, but the contours of the lenses actually re-align your eyes. I wore them until the week was over. It was a great choice and I was extremely happy. My sister and brother thought it was crazy until they saw that I wasn't complaining about my eyes anymore.

So yes, go get some Gunnars. I've used flux. Gunnars will do more for your eyes than flux or adjusting the gamma on monitor will do.

edit: gunnars was the only reason i was able to continue working. I would try to work with them off later on in the week, but after a few hours, the pain would come back. It wasnt until i got a significant amount of time to rest my eyes that the pain went away and I could start using my PC without them again.

Thanks! haha
I may not have headache problems like the OP, but my eyes do get sore; my eyes were actually hurting as a I read this, and after I applied flux (its sundown for me right now) I noticed the difference. Not sure if it will do the same for the OP's headaches but I am definitely going to use this program! Also the fact that in-game it looks like it's sunset is a pretty cool aesthetic bonus.

Gunnars =
amber tint (flux does)
anti-glare/reflective coating (on some rxd glasses)
slight magnification (on rxd glasses)

The entire idea comes from shooting glasses, and you can get those for $20-40 with the amber tint and anti-glare.

Gunnars work, they're just really overpriced and they don't really perform better than shooting glasses.

Some opticians have the option to get a range of tinted lenses (with or without rx) in any frames they have too, which is great if you're outside of the US and wear glasses anyway. Apparently, purple or green lenses help some dyslexics so they have a whole rainbow of colours.

This. It changes the brightness of your monitor at night. Haven't gotten headaches at all since I started using it.

That's the part that causes headaches. The blue part of the spectrum, high intensity light. When you make your monitor have a warmer color (fully adjustable in the settings for how warm you want it to look) it will reduce the stress on your eyes, and in turn, reduce headaches from looking at monitors.

I've been using Flux for about a year now and it's made my computer-using exponentially better. I've had zero headaches due to computer usage ever since installing it, and especially since I use a computer for my job as well it's incredibly helpful. I absolutely love the program and recommend it to as many people as I can.

I can vouch for flux too.

I have a habit of staying up all night with no lights on in my room. That tends to cause eye strain when I spend all that time on the computer. I installed flux, and almost immediately noticed I got far less eye strain during the late night sessions than I used to.

I don't even notice the difference between when it's running and not any more, either. After a day or 2 of using it I stopped noticing it.

came to thread expecting zero useful advice, 100% gunnar bashing
leaving satisfied, but disappointed because I too know the pain that is eye strain, being a software developer and general geek. and wanted to see if these will actually help with the headaches.

I'd definitely recommend flux. It mimics bright daytime light during the day and a more reddish light at night that helps my eyes a lot more. Also, don't sit in complete darkness while you're staring at your monitor. Make sure your room has plenty of lighting. The reason for headaches is because with the sharp contrast between dark room and bright monitor, your eyes are constantly adjusting. This adjustment strains your eyes and causes headaches.

Oh, and as for Gunnars, I believe Jibba is correct. That being said, I've never bought a part since I already wear glasses. Since double glasses would just be silly....I'll just say I can't help you on that front.

Flux is super solid. Highly recommend trying it out before you drop 80 or whatever it is on glasses.
