Can StarCraft be on TV?

A few days ago while in the shower , where all important thoughts happen, I was thinking about the validity os StarCraft on TV in europe or the US.

I was thinking about this because I was remembering the question that sundance asked last year about MLG being on ESPN 2. This got me thinking that we would all like E-SPORTS to be on TV and especially on free to watch TV. This poses a problem that free to watch TV channels are very popular so taking air time away must be with the knoledge that the same amount or more people will watch that than the normal programmes. Outside of Korea at the moment I don't belive this is a realistic possibility for any E-SPORT.

Why not have it on PPV TV?

This causes another problem because a majority of people in the SC community disliked the idea of PPV in the MLG winter arena. So if the event was on PPV TV then what is stopping you watching it on the internet for free apart from if they make the entire event PPV which would reduce viewer numbers and not make it worth the whiles of the TV channels.

The problem MLG and WCG share

These two events also share a problem. This problem is that they have many different games so which ones would be shown on TV? On the internet you can create many different streams but the same luxury is not available on television so the veiwing expirence could be very underwhelming for a majority of people especally if they are part of a smaller community representd at WCG or MLG.

Thank you for reading my first blog post.

Arirang shows SCBW on TV so I see no problem. Though the games are fairly old ones. And I dont think that most people dislike that MLG tries a PPV model. Most disliked how MLG introduced it.

I don't think it would work on American television. It'd probably have to be PPV instead

not really, mlg gets like 50k viewers and maybe half is USA only no tv channel will put on something with that number of viewers.

Went for 18 pages. Was in response to someone at sixjaxgaming.com's article to the contrary.

Said all I wanted to say in that thread, it's a good read. The obstacles that you missed are there.

And I think community at large will warm up to PPV TV with lower rates and better invites.

I'm very sorry but unless HotS revolutionizes something major, this is not "the game" of Esports future.

I think the number of people interested in SC gaming is not high enough in the US. It would be easier to stream games anyway, and probably more profitable. Until a profit can be made without incurring high opportunity costs (in this case, airing a football or basketball game), SC2 will not be shown on American TV.

Television is old news, the internet is the future. Spending money to break into the TV scene is a waste, rather TV companies should be paying attention to the fact that the internet offers customization at a level their service can only dream of.

OGN, BroodWar, FTW. Judging by the reaction of most people upon seeing that they were expected to give some money to the scene (MLG), because that's how business works, we won't be seeing SC2 or any other new "esport" on TV any time soon.

For the record, G4 used to play some MLG footage of Halo2. I forget when, but I know I watched it.

We have 3 or so games channels on TV in China in a pretty cheap cable package. Although they tend to show more Dota and War3 than others, as well as some news shows and the bigger channel covers the Korean BW games (OSL/SPL). Very little SC2 though.

It can be on TV, in any country. But it's probably not worthwhile for most networks.
