Fuck yeah, random monobattles. The mans monobattle, the only real way to play that game type online. Random races, random units, the ultimate in improvisation. Work with what you have to craft a strategy on the fly and eliminate the opposing team. It's fun and no two games are ever alike.
Let's take this dice-rollin' piece of nonsense to the next level. This is a challenge!
4 Pro teams
BO3
Double elimination format.
1-day tournament
BO5 finals.
Forced-random unit/random race monobattles, 4v4.
$1000 winner takes all.
Standard EU Random Monobattles rules, forced random unit and race, no medivacs, mothership, warp prism or corrupter.
But what about the competitive aspect! - Screw your competitive aspect! Real men random monobattle. This shit'll put hair on your chest son. You have no idea what unit you'll get, you have no idea what comp your team will get, you MIGHT NOT EVEN BE ABLE TO SHOOT UP SON!
Seriously though, this is a pure fanservice event, a chance for the pros to cut loose in a fun format with a cool prize. The audience gets to see their favourite players do something unusual. BO3 double-elimination helps balance out the random nature of the game but remember, nothing is ever certain in random monobattles. There's nothing to stop one team strategically damaging part of hte other to ensure that they delay or even eliminate their capacity to produce the unit that could win them the game. There's a surprising amount of strategy in random monobattles that make it a fun to watch format, albeit utterly unsuitable for competitive play.
One pro-team has already signed up and another (Quantic) has shown interest. - If you represent a known team that wants to participate, feel free to contact me with your line-up via PM. Once I've chosen the teams I'll let them all know and we can setup a date and time to get this done.

Really hope EG does it, although I sort of feel like EGs top players wouldn't be down for this. For somereason I just can't see Idra playing Monobattles. However InControl/Machine/LZGamer/Demu might be down for it.

Are you and Apollo going to be casting? I like the two of you together, but the guy you quoted is right. Having Day[9] cast with you just seems appropiate seeing as he started the whole monobattle thing.
Edit: Don't necessarily agree with the needing to be drunk/high, but what the hell if you think it's a good idea. I'm sure it would be entertaining either way.

warp prism, medivac, mothership, marine, zergling, zealot, roach, stalker, marauder. Any T1 unit or drop ship should be removed.

Well they did ban some units: no medivacs, mothership, warp prism or corrupter.
If they removed all those units there would hardly be anything left to fight with and you'd lose a lot of the early game excitement.

Eeeeh, there was a 4v4 tournament not too long ago that showed 4v4 was broken really (who knew), with a team that just speedling marauder stalker baneling'd every game, or something.

Do it! I think it would be great to include tipboxes for players since this is an event FOR the crowd, really rewarding players that do something cool and innovative seems like a good idea. It might also get some other teams more interested. =]

It's random races and random units. In other words: it is not probable that everyone can cannon-rush and it is not probable that everyone will be able to have T1 units.

For the record, rolling Warp Prisms and doing a 200/200 Probe drop is DEVASTATING.

This looks like it will be broken in the hands of pro's.
Is feeding allowed? If it is simply feeding the ally that was lucky to get a good rush unit (marine, zerg, roach or stalker) seems good. Guess marine is the best unit you can roll followed by stalker and roach.

I've had hopes we'd get funny events like this with some serious prizes involved to hopefully attract high level players at some point. Hope it turns out well.
I'm not sure if I like the random units though. With low level players it might work, but with 4 high caliber players on each side, chances seem pretty high the team who gets the most favourable units assigned will automatically win. With just one unit to work with i think it will be pretty impossible to overcome disadvantages in unit setup (how to you win vs ling+marine+x+x if you didnt get a low tier unit randomed in your team?).
My own suggestion would be to allow the players to choose their units themselves, but put restrictions on them to avoid ling/ling/marine/zealot combos. Such as for example: Only 1/4 players may choose a light unit, and 1/4 must choose a capital unit. With only two simple rules like that, the dynamics chance drastically and I for one would like to see how pro players theorycraft what setup is best with those restrictions. Restrictions can also of course be toyed around with endlessly. You can force spellcaster units, force flying units, force units from all three races, ban low tier units, add "no attack before X minutes" rules, you name it. I think putting up rules like that and then allowing the players to try and create the perfect unit combo would create a more dynamic and enjoyable tournament than just randoming out units to each player.

In other words, too much randomness could ruin the fun.
Of course the situation can be reversed on the next battle, but the game will be not that fun if there is too much unbalance, since we are talking about pros.
It could be a good idea to remove at least 1 of the 2 random factor (either in the units or in the race).
Removing race random gives us games where the players can give us higher performance.
Removing unit random means a lot of T1 play in my opinion, as the teams play to win, not to have fun like in true monobattles. (Thus, I wouldn't suggest this option).

The random thing is just done to add casualty to the mix and by doing so more funzies. Honestly putting up all sorts of different rules would not be as good for me as just jump in, watch someone like Idra playing terran and bitching about getting reapers and not marines :D

Problem with getting Medivacs as your unit would be that you literally can't attack. Only problem this has is that only Zerg's can drop or take island bases.
The maps used will be modded so that you are given a completly random thing and that will be shown by the mod itself.

It depends on the units people get, and the strategies they go for. T1 Unit rushes and cannon rushes could potentially make the games very quick. I'll be watching regardless, interesting idea for a tournament.

When i read this i was almost crying because of joy, but then i read, that normal people can't participate.
So i hope this becomes a big and fun success and in the future you could allow everyone to participate, but the pro teams get high seeds, so that it would be amateurs batteling it out to play against the pros.
For example allowing 60 amateur teams to play, and the 4 pro teams get seeds in the round of 8. That way they don't have to play against tons of noobs and not waste their time.

I do think that Apollo's Biscuit should have some sort of drinking game going on while they cast. Not sure how it would work, but it would prob. change based on the players.
Also, there should be a 1v1 monobattle teamleague format competition.

That sounds really awesome actually. With only 1 unit, the players are reduced to their skill with a single unit and thus could make a more even match between pros and non-pros.

Well this inspired me to give monobattles another shot.
Ended up on a team with roach/viking/thor/zergling vs voidray/marauder/stalker/tank.
Sounds easy, but ended up with all my team mates mostly dying and leaving and me going pure roach mondragon style against the void rays until I just massed spores and slow pushed with them. 55 minute game of roach vs voidray/marauder/stalker/tank.
At the end I finally used one of my old allies remaining scvs to make starports and mass viking, only after I had secured a wicked spore crawler contain letting me mine the whole map.
at first I thought it's going to be all about the luck of the match-up.
but maybe not! Maybe there is some skill hidden under there.

They're particularly effective if you have another zerg player on your team because monobattles rules prohibit more than 1 queen per hatchery UNLESS your unit is queen, meaning the queen player can spread creep for the other guy as well as spread creep over the map far more rapidly than you'd expect. They're also fairly durable units which does help and they scale pretty well with upgrades.

I'm just excited to see players having to play in an environment that is all about adaptation rather than just preparation. Random monobattles wouldn't be the only way to achieve this - another possibility would be random two-unit restrictions (inspired by the Funday Monday where you were not allowed to build any two units determined by the opposing player), or whatever. Regardless, this sounds like a lot of fun

So not exactly like workers, 1 queen per hatchery. Which seems fine production-wise, but I guess can be annoying if you get something like hydras, since you can't spread creep as effectivelly.

Just build an extra hatch for an extra queen to spread creep! C'mon, gotta think like a mono-battler. You'll probably float extra larva anyway for a while so you might as well spread creep instead of inject a couple times.

Just 3v3 monobattled with forced random units both on the ladder and with friends in honour of Total Biscuit. Notes from gameplay:
Hydra-Hydra-Ghost dies to baneling, baneling thor very badly indeed.
Voidray, Carrier, Archon is surprisingly viable (at least against stalker, archon, queen) if all three in your team cannon rush and then fill the map with cannons to defend.
Ling, Muta, BC provided so much fun that I might try it as a "legitimate" 3v3 build.
And Infestors are a pain to micro against reapers...

Personally I'm not a fan of TB because I feel like his casting style has a great deal of contrived excitement. He doesn't have the knowledge to talk about metagame or possible outcomes for the players during breaks in the action, so instead he tries to make those breaks exciting. + Show Spoiler +relax, the terran is just building his first barracks

Lots of people like or dislike certain casters for a variety of reasons, but it's no reason for those casters to change the way they conduct themselves. Regardless of whether they're "hurting or helping 'e-sports'" casters can act as they please so long as they get hired to do their job.
That said, you're still entitled to dislike their style. Just don't go telling him to be different just because you don't like how he does things.
