I'll be honest, I formatted my computer probably 3 months ago, reinstalled Starcraft 2 and haven't opened or played it since.

Don't get me wrong I adore the game. I watch GSL almost every night. I F5 TL.net probably 500 times a day.

The thing is my drive to play games is based on my desire to win and play near flawlessly, that gives me enjoyment. I'm an extremely competitive person, a perfectionist. With Starcraft, sub-masters (possibly even sub-GM) is never going to cut it for me. I just can't get enjoyment out of playing the game, knowing I am literally leagues below players still considered nobodies. Now I don't mind knowing and accepting I am leagues below MMA or DRG, or even the great man iNcontroL, but knowing I am leagues below Frank from Uzbekistan is something that would eat me up. I still get great satisfaction and enjoyment out of watching the game being played at the top level, but know there is no way for me to reach it. I know I dont have the dedication, time, conditions, lifestyle etc. to make that happen, even if it was what I truly wanted.

I just can't play for hours on end, knowing deep down inside that I'm actually terrible at the game.

I just can't play game after game, perfecting mechanics and timings and everything else required.

I would probably last under 2 days if I tried.

But sometimes..
Sometimes I want to..

How do you live knowing there are people more attractive than you? People that can run faster than you? People who are smarter than you?

If you don't like the game, don't play, but don't not play because of some silly inferiority complex. It's just something to do to have fun. If it makes you feel any better, there are probably players far worse than you.

Amen. When I was younger I used to get really down on myself because everything I liked to do there would be someone better at it than me. Then I realized, hey Im not trying to become a billionaire doing this, Im doing it for fun! After that I just became a lot more relaxed about things. Im still competitive and want to do my best in the competitive things that I enjoy, but my best doesnt have to be equal to someone elses best. Its enough for me to know I did my best and then congratulate them on their skills.

Have fun!

Because i don't get enjoyment out of being more attractive, or running faster than other people.. I get enjoyment out of life in other ways..

But when it comes to games my enjoyment lies in being competitive.. Not a fair comparison..

What he said.

Just play the game if you enjoy it, and don't let being inferior to someone else stop you. If you did reach GM, you'll be scared because of DeMusliM or whatever being better than you. Assume you get better than him, Stephano will be better than you. And so on, and so on. It will never end until you're the SC2 bonjwa.

I'll be as blunt as necessary.

Your life is gonna suck until you can learn to be satisfied with what you have. If you spend it constantly craving what you can't have, thinking "I'd only be happy if I could have that one thing", your eyes and heart will never be able to focus on what's beautiful and delightful right in front of you. Do you really think you are the perfect judge of "the best thing possible for you"? Well for a long time I deceived myself, and thought I did. Don't be limited by what you think is the pinnacle of existence, go out, explore, try many different things, then you will know what really gets you satisfied.

Ladder. Is. Pointless.
It leaves an empty hole in you, especially once you reach the top. You know how I felt once I reached my Starcraft-career-long-goal of being ranked #1 in my country? -Great, now what ... that wasn't really worth it.- True story bro.

So actively pursue your dreams and make them a reality, but only in the spirit of sound judgement and wisdom; don't chase a satisfaction you can't grasp and that won't last. You live near Korea, get a job work get money learn Korean --> go visit and watch some matches live (: I've always dreamed of doing that. Then again, I've never really dedicated myself to fulfilling that goal, and look how far along the path I am: zlich.
A good inspiration to me, Bboy B.Yu , is well-known for his fantastic breakdance tutorial videos. He's Korean, grew up in Australia, but he just LOVED dance so much, he put his all and devoted himself to becoming the best he could possibly be. Now he's in Korea, living his dream as a professional KPop backup dancer.

Some other really important piece of wisdom imma bash with is: you are measured against yourself. You are not measured against other people's "success", you're measured by what you have achieved compared to what you are capable of. The fastest Rubik's Cube solver in the world, Feliks Zemdegs (Australian fancy that), reached a level of proficiency in 2 months that I've been striving towards for 7 years. FlaSh won the MSL one year after playing Starcraft for the first time. The point is, that's them and their lives, with their abilities, talents and gifts. It is unreasonable and stupid to feel down, just because they can "objectively, do better than you", because that's not the point, there is no impartial judge. Don't get down comparing your relative 'failures', we're all set up to do different things. The only time you should be hard on yourself is when you know you could have done better, but didn't even put a semblance of reasonable effort into it. Play to have fun, it's really stupid (and I suffer from this whenever I come back) to have unreasonable expectations of your abilities, and get angry and frustrated when you don't meet impossible expectations.

Play Starcraft with IRL firends. Play Starcraft for fun. Don't think there is any worth in having a few more online virtual points than the next guy. You're doing it wrong if instead of 'a release' it is 'a cause' of stress.
