Shampoo. Sham pooooo. A nasty word in itself. I've never liked to wash my hair, unless it was someone else who did it (i.e. at the barber), because that feels beyond good. About 4 years ago, I had a summer where I decided I was going to grow dreads. I thought the way to do that was just simply not washing. So for the whole summer, I didn't wash my hair once. I'd rinse it out with water for 3-4 minutes when I showered, but that was it. I knew nothing about dreads, but apparently that was how you did it, and they just started to grow in. Obviously that's not quite right, but I really liked the feel of non-washed hair.
Since then, I haven't washed it consistently. You'd never be able to tell by looking at it or feeling it- it's soft, and not greasy looking at all. I rationalize a bit, yeah. People didn't start using shampoo until about 100 years ago, and not everyone had lice, right?
I've been reading alternate methods of washing it, that are cheaper as well. A baking soda/water wash, with apple cider vinegar/water rinse. Haven't tried it, seems like it would be a bit stinky, but apparently it balances out the pH levels in your hair.
I hate the feel now when I put shampoo or conditioner in it. Squeaky, dry, more oily feeling than if I hadn't washed it. It hasn't been an issue since I started.
Until now. Before I would never tell people, because it wasn't a big deal. But I told one of my friends, and she thinks it's the nastiest thing imaginable. "You'll get lice, it looks so greasy!" (Even though before she knew she complimented me on how soft it was/good it looked) More people began to find out, and I get a lot of beef from people about it now. They say it's the unhealthiest and least hygenic thing they've ever heard. To me, it's natural and normal now. It doesn't feel or look gross, but people freaking out about it has made me think about it, and reconsider consistent poo'ing again.
What do you guys think? Completely nasty, or ok if it looks/smells/feels good?

Do you even bother to shower?
What about take care of the rest of your body?
What's the difference?
|
you can still just wash it with water and without shampoo? Then you can clearly say you wash it, and it's also healthier for the hair anyway. Most shampoos aren't that great for the hair anyway, and depending on how often you shower and use it might actually be worse for your hair, using it once a week or so was what I've heard, idk. Doesn't mean I do it myself, because my hair kinda needs it to not look oily, sad.
|
as long as it doesnt smell, look greasy as hell, or feel weird, i guess whatever?
|
When you go bald prematurely because of the excess grease on your scalp killing your hair follicles...You the only one to blame.
|
you wont get lice from not showering. i can tell you that much.
|
I don't know of any health risks associated with not washing your hair, so perhaps somebody in this blog can tell me if there are. If there aren't any, and your hair doesn't look or feel like you dipped it in a vat of oil, I fail to see the problem.
|
shampoo's nowadays are actually bad for your hair as they strip oils from it, forcing your body to overproduce, which is where hair gets that shiny/glossy look.
but yeah I've been thinking of doing this for quite a while actually
|
You wash your hair, you just don't shampoo it. Don't tell people you "don't wash it" or else they'll think you don't even rinse it. Just say you don't use shampoo. There's nothing actually wrong about that.. Also, your friends are total douchebags for giving you shit about something so small.
Also, let them know that you shouldn't use shampoo more than 2-3 days a week regardless and that by you not shampooing it you're being more healthy than they are when they do every day. Maybe that'll shut them up.

The problem, I guess, is that it's not "socially acceptable." I never thought twice about it until now. Maybe I'm just so biased toward not washing it I'm failing to see something that's completely gross about it.

Yo son that sounds pretty legit. I think you shouldn't wash it at all. Live an all natural lifestyle. That girl you were talking to is just a hater. Just forget about her. If you talk to her again just be like yo how does it feel to have to put shampoo in your hair to make it look nice. I don't put shampoo in it and my hair is baller. Tell everyone you went back to washing your hair and DON'T ACTUALLY DO IT. Man up, son.

ur disgusting, just wash it. geez

I'm one of the unfortunate to have oily hair
|
Nasty as shit, sometimes after a day of not washing my hair it feels like theres a fucking bioma in my head.
|
First off I used to have dreads, and even when you have dreads you still wash your hair. You just use special dread shampoo which doesn't untangle it but still cleans it. And honestly why the hell do you just not wash it? It's not like it takes much effort to wash hair if it's not incredibly long, and if you don't wash it at least every few days it gets nasty and itchy. As a guy who's had very long hair before I'll tell you that it's very important to keep it clean.
|
Just shave your head, problem solved.
|
I can't even leave the house without having shampooed my hair that day, feel like death

Just feels gross, honestly.
|
I'd do it at least like once a month or something idk o_o As long as you're rinsing often I don't think it's that big of a deal. And of course as long as you don't have a dandruff problem or something
|
pretty sure it smells, you just got used to it. the reason we shampoo is to effectively remove dirt and especially the oil that is secreted by our hair glands. if you do not use soap or shampoo on your for a very long period of time, it will get greasy. however, OVER shampooing is just as bad for your hair and a bit of oil/grease is actually very healthy for your hair. good luck.
|
I usually wash my hair everyday. My stylist told me to just a small amount of shampoo each day and not to rub the shampoo deep into the scalp.
Just brush the shampoo through your hair. It'll get rid of the extra grease on your hair, but will leave your scalp still naturally oily.

I haven't shampooed my hair in 4 years. My hair is very clean and I was it using the "water-only washing" method that people used before shampoo was invented. I like it (:

I vote: wash it with shampoo every so often.
|
Well i've never heard of any health risks to not wash your hair (besides lice of course). But i mean if it doesn't smell why not?
|
That article isn't helpful lol.
Just wash if it smells bad, imo.
|
I talked to a guy that said he very rarely uses soap and shampoo. He was not smelly and his hair looked alright. He showers every day with only water, and often more than once. He gets into the shower at the earliest opportunity after having worked up a sweat. He only uses soap if he absolutely has to, like to wash away grease after working on a car.
About his hair, he mentioned that after the first week of not using shampoo, his hair stopped looking and feeling greasy, and eventually felt more soft than it did before he stopped using shampoo. He said his skin also feels better without using soap. He washes his towels much more often than in the past.
He honestly convinced me that he is not actually a dirty smelly hobo. After thinking about it, I guess the trick is in always having fresh towels and never doing something like wearing a t-shirt twice, and he basically changed from buying soap and shampoo to doing more laundry. Knowing that this might work could be interesting for people with skin problems.

I do something similar I just wash my body and face most days and do my hair about twice a week makes my hair look so much healthier and feel better to. It also solved my dandruff problem and saves me a TON of money.
|
friend, show some pics of your hair and then we can make a decision.
|
If you go outside without washing your hair, people will think your dirty and they will see you in a negative image.
|
I wash my hair twice a week. Partially because I'm lazy, and partially because my hair feels/looks better if I only do it twice a week. I use soap/body wash every time I shower though.
|
Before I had to wear a suit to work I never shampooed my hair for years, just scrub it with water. My head smelled great, my hair looked awesome (it would basically do anything I wanted it too, but always look just a bit messy). I would never brush or comb it, just towel dry and run my fingers through it. It looked sweet and not at all dirty, just wild.
Now I have to look like a square business man (because I guess that's what I am). So I shampoo. But not on the weekends.
|
I went a year without washing my hair. I'd still wash it with water every once in a while. It was really greasy and nasty for a few weeks, but eventually my body got it all sorted out. It was pretty sweet at that point. You ever see a dog with a really nice coat? That's what my hair was like, shiny, healthy, smooth, the works. It was DISGUSTING when it was wet though, lol. Just like a dog.
|
I only shampoo my hair like twice a week. Mostly due to laziness, rather than having anything against shampoo. And its only after 4 or 5 days without shampoo that I start to notice that it feels or looks any different, so I usually do it every 3 days or so.
|
I love washing my hair especially with the right shampoo because it's so relaxing and the smell of the shampoo soothes me. But having really long hair, it's kind of annoying to dry after I get out of the shower because it takes me hours even with the blow dryer.
I haven't read everyone's replies yet but I'm eager to jump in and say there's a thing called 'dry-shampoo' and they should sell it in your local drug store if you hate conventional shampoo. Just powder your hair with it and it absorbs all the grease when you rub it in your scalp. Comb it out of your hair and you're done.
Also, lice is more attracted to hair that has been washed too frequently.
I really can't make a judgement on whether your decision is gross or not but I do applaud your honesty.
|
You definitely won't get lice, lol.

So did you ever get dreads? DO you still have them?

I think that is pretty gross, but that could just be because I have pretty greasy/oily hair and I feel disgusting when I go a day without soaping it. Why don't you just shave your hair off, then you won't have to worry about it at all.

I'd look terrible without hair.
|
My friend doesn't wash her hair, or maybe does about once a month, and not with shampoo, some other kind of soap product. She has great hair.
From http://health.howstuffworks.com/skin-care/scalp-care/tips/hair-washing.htm
Frequent shampooing can actually be counterproductive. Because you're trying so hard to get rid of sebum, your body reacts by producing even more of it.
|
Between you and me and everyone else in this thread...
Ever since I read somewhere that putting chemicals in your hair every day is bad for you... I've been only using shampoo every other day.
My hair is less dry, but it doesn't feel oily or dirty o:

they used the water only method cuz that is the only method available to them. lol
|
I have fairly long hair and I usually only shampoo it every two to three days. On long weekends where I just lock myself away and don't go outside I'll go four but I don't think I've ever gone more than four days without shampooing it. :p
|
My hair looks way better if I dont shampoo it. I wash it almost everyday, but I only use shampoo/conditioner every 2-3 weeks, because without it my hairdo makes itself when I get out of bed. With it my hair is flat and lifeless, as if it wasn't sentient.
|
Funny how most people think that lice prefers to live in unclean hair when its the exact opposite. Huh.
As long as you wash your hair with water and the end result is the same as using shampoo do whatever you feel like. I don't use shampoo very often - once a week maybe - and my hair is the same is if i shampoo'd every day.
|
I thought about doing the same once, but then my hair got very greasy.. :S
Is there any way you can stop the feeling that your hair feels so gross? Also, I have the feeling that if I stop shampooing, all the skin of my head will be stuck in my hair.

As long as your hair doesn't get nasty, what's the problem? My sweat doesn't stink so I don't use deodorant. People find this absurd, but why would I use it when no one smells me anyway? And besides, I get headaches from the terrible parfume stenches which are on every freaking body product these days. I'd rather smell someone's sweat than some horrible chemical stench.
|
I shampoo everyday, but I don't have a problem with others as long as it doesn't smell terrible. One girl in my high school was nicknamed 'fish' because her hair smelled like bad fish (like 3-month-old-rotten-fish-YUCK). She was known not to ever use shampoo...
I know a few others who only shampoo few times a month, and don't smell noticeably bad (unless I plug my nose into their hair and take a giant sniff). So yeah, it all depends I guess.
|
i got so bad hair if I wouldnt wash it every morning I'd look like I rubbed a stick of butter in it plus I got lots of scales ( dunno if that's the right word here )
so not using shampoo would certainly not work for me

Saying no is a lot quicker response than having to stand in the vicinity of a stinky dude to explain that yes, by not wearing deodorant, you do have a unique smell that is oddly reminiscent of an old and unkept Parisian subway car in the middle of July
Maybe it's not as strong as some other people's sweat, which is certainly likely, but you've definitely got a bo. All sweat smells.

On February 07 2012 11:09 Dalguno wrote: What do you guys think? Completely nasty, or ok if it looks/smells/feels good?
As long as you're clean (i.e. at least rinsing your hair, which you say you do) then you should be ok. You're right when you say that shampoo hasn't been around too terribly long. Using an alternative method seems like it would be just fine as long as you're consistent and don't have dandruff issues.
It's been my experience that if you have an unusual bathing habit you really shouldn't share it with too many people. I used to tell people that I didn't shower my entire junior year of high school. This is true - the shower couldn't build pressure due to plumbing problems and I had to take baths. Some people even think baths are disgusting and say things like "OMG, you're just sitting in your own filth, how unsanitary!!!". Sparing them the discussion of how soap actually works, there's a bit of a stigma in our society when it comes to bathing.
To some people, if you don't shower every day at least once then you're not very clean. It took me until I was 22 before I stopped getting the "OMG SO GROSS" comments when I'd tell someone I was on an "every other day" schedule, something that becomes more common as our lives get busier. I've known a few people who think it's gross if they can't shower twice a day and can't understand why someone like me would go every two days.
I'll compare your hair to something else: laundry. The Wall Street Journal reported two years ago that the washing machine agitator did most the work, so detergent may not be necessary. I could try and explain all the independent tests afterwords, but you're probably better off trying it yourself. Most say the smell is different (smelling like water), but the clothes are just as clean.
Back to the original point, it seems like you're doing something similar to the laundry - gaining the positive effects of water treatment and light agitation without the added effects of shampoo. If this works for you then keep it up. Keep in mind that there are many who won't understand, so it's probably not worth making it public information. Some people are just weird about alternative methods. My girlfriend, for instance, refuses to drink water I got out of the bathroom sink "because the bathroom is unsanitary", even though the pipes are identical to the tap on the sink. With that being said, your friend's perceptions aren't logically-based (especially the comment on lice since lice will live on any head it can land on), so if I were you I wouldn't bother telling anyone unless you know they're open-minded enough to handle it.
|
Shampoo is used to remove shit from your hair (dirt, dandruff, skin particles, oils, sprays, environmental crap, etc.). Unless you're living in a bubble, your hair is being bombarded with stuff, the same way that the rest of your body is (although hair is what captures it). If you have no problem cleaning your body, you should have no problem cleaning your hair. Washing your hair without shampoo is like washing your body without soap or body wash. It doesn't actually get rid of the smell or do a superior job of cleaning you.
|
I wash my hair everyday when I keep it short (like under two inches short). My hair just gets really greasy really fast and looks and feels disgusting.
As it's gotten longer though I'm okay with just washing it 2-3 times a week, and it looks fine and feels not greasy or anything.
I think conditioner is kind of disgusting though. The only time I've ever used it was during the period where I used to bleach the fuck out of my hair (it's basically black, so I had to bleach it and turn it gross greenish, wait a day, and then bleach it again for another hour).

Water is washing. Don't let the masses fool you. I'd use SOMETHING to cleanse though even if its honey or oatmeal or something every now and then. They have whole organic shampoos too. But yeah.
Shampoo is a trick to get your money.
|
Stop calling him disgusting, it's rude as hell and completely off base. Your hair produces these oils for a reason. Shampoo strips your hair of more than just the oil, and isn't really all that good for your hair or scalp.
You can say you wash it, but you don't use shampoo. Anyone who tries to tell you that it's disgusting or whatever is wrong, the dirt comes out with or without it.. It's not like you build up extra germs by not using shampoo.
|
|
I'm really surprised by the very negative replies to this thread. No need to be rude. If other people who were near the OP and simply could not tell whether he smelt or looked bad and even complimented him on his hair then I think it's fine for him to not to shampoo. Plus it's interesting to note in the links provided by others how using shampoo at home and so frequently has only become the norm quite recently. I have straight short-medium length hair and shampoo every other day and my hair is fine and doesn't look oily. Reading the link above provided by trias_e it really does look like most people shouldn't shampoo every day and can probably get away with reducing their shampoo frequency if not altogether. Nice article.

Also, for the people talking about dreads smelling like shit, you ever heard of natural oils?: Rose oil and such.

You're lucky to have such naturally clean hair, if I go 1 day without using shampoo my hair looks and feels oily to the point that it is really uncomfortable.
|
After reading through this whole thread I can say with certainty (duh!) that hair care is relative to the person who owns said hair. Personally, I shower in the mornings and when I wake up the next morning my hair feels like it was drenched in grease all night so I generally shampoo every day or else my hair is horrible. However, based on your picture, your hair looks good. Doesn't look too greasy or dirty... whatever works for you <3 also, be sure to clarify to your "friends" that you actually wash your hair you just don't shampoo it.
It should also be pointed out that lice love very clean hair, not dirty hair... the dirtier the hair, the safer from lice

I don't see the problem as long as you're rinsing it. In fact I may experiment with less shampooing myself. When the ingredient label is paragraphs long and everything is unpronounceable, it's probably got some less than wholesome things in it.

I didn't shampoo my hair today. It was stringy, greasy, and wouldn't stay in place. Never doing that again.

I think its amusing reading all of the posts about people who have to wash their hair every day because it feels really oily. Odds are your hair is really oily feeling because you ARE washing it everyday. In response, your scalp is creating way more oil than normal to make up for you constantly trying to remove it. Thus, your hair feels really oily if you dont shampoo it for a day. You are just experiencing what you have already done to yourself in the first place.
|
Don't grow dreads with hair like that's straight and blondish like that. I had hair alot like that back in jr. high because I went surfing alot. Just keep it like that or cut it short, I cut mine shortish then got a rat tail (get a rat tail!!) then cut it off because it got longer and I had my fun with it. People will like the cute rat tail better than dreds
Short hair is easier to manage too

Heres an article (among many) that backs up exactly what I posted.

Next time think a little before publicly insulting my intelligence level over something you apparently have no idea about.

exigent: dont wash your hair for a day, you'll look less greasier.
really? so one day without washing it will make it look more attractive than freshly shampooed hair? there's really no way you can argue out of your post, unless you make revisions.

I've tested my hair by not washing it for weeks and it only gets more oily, more dandruff, more itch, just altogether disgusting. Obviously my personal experience isn't rigorous, but I think I'll stick to at least applying water regularly.

I only shampoo every other day, but I can't imagine NEVER doing it. My hair would be the most disgusting tangled oily mess. It would be revolting

Where in my post did I mention anything relating to how often you should be washing your hair, or whether or not it makes you look more attractive? Where are you getting this from? You basically just made up half of your post in an attempt to argue against me. Im fine with you disagreeing, and arguing back, but at least use my post as a reference, rather than making up statements that I never said.

I have never once used the statement "everyone". Im not sure why you are using that over and over. I said "Odds are your hair is really oily feeling because you ARE washing it everyday". That is my exact statement. You call me out thinking I am stating some law about people. I refute you, and back up what I am saying with an article (I'll post more if you wish) that says exactly that. The more often you wash your hair, the more sebum you remove, which in turn causes your body to overproduce it. All im stating is fact. Im not saying everyone is the same, im saying overwashing causes your skin to create more oils. Stop twisting my words into something else.

I think its amusing reading all of the posts about people who have to wash their hair every day because it feels really oily.
This is you being a pompous douchebag, and the basis for why im even talking to u. Clearly people wash their hair with products because different people have different levels of grease due to extra hormones. Not everyone shits rainbows and sunshine pal. it was amusing to see you flail about though and address everything else in your post aside from this though
im saying overwashing causes your skin to create more oils
No shit sherlock

Alright, fair enough. I assumed you were attacking me based on what I was trying to convey. That being said, I can without a doubt look back and agree with you that the way I said it comes across as extremely snide, and pretty retarded sounding. For that I can apologize, that was never my intention. I don't believe in being stubborn when im wrong, and I was definitely wrong with the way I opened my post. Apologies, wont happen again

OP makes sense, there was something where this one guy stopped showering also and his hair was starting super oily and all like most people however after awhile, their hair got normal soft and smooth and better than ever. I dont know the reason though but yeah you do wash the rest of your body, if youre fine with all of this than its fine as long as you dont smell bad youre good!

Overwashing is relative to the kind of person you are.
So here's me:
in the past. - Never washed my hair, rinsed it with water every now and then. Perfectly fine.
me now, - don't wash my hair-> fucking acne all over my forehead.
i guess if puberty never hit , or if people never work out and sweat, or if people never worked a day in their lifez(not some pussy job), what u say would be true and yes if everyone stopped washing their hair as frequently it would benefit them in the long run.
People have different lifestyles, did it ever occur to you u can get oily and sweaty WITHOUT natural causes?
Good day sir.
(also i realize full well im being a douchebag LOL. i use TL to vent)

Wow, calm down, HeavOnEarth.
This is such a touchy subject~ Many people who don't understand the functions of their own body, stuck in habits. It's almost as hard as talking to someone about their religion.
Sweaty, disgusting teenagers wear too much axe. Emotions blind them.

the fuck does teenagers using axe have anything to do with this lol thank you for the enlightenment mr.pope ?

Guys, guess what is worth getting riled-up about? That's right, the proper usage of shampoo.
