I mean seriously. Im all for automating and simplifying shit (actually im not) but do these people think the average computer users are autistic or something? Seriously. What the fuck is up with all these stupid protections? I supposedly have administrative rights but i cant do fucking jack shit in the program files folder. I mean i turn off UAC, undo read only status on the whole goddamn folder which doesnt ACTUALYL FUCKING WORK, i mess around with fucking user accounts to try and get an actual administrative account thats unrestricted. I dont even know what the fuck they are thinking. What THE FUCK LET ME USE MY COMPUTER.

I want to start installing shit in C drive or soemthing but then i would have not 1 but THREE fucking program folders. The stupid fucking program folder, program folder 86x, and the new one. I mean fuck this shit. Seriously.

You don't need to browse your harddrive to open an app. Just click a freaking shortcut. I don't really see the need of you anger.

Someone is mad that they have an additional pop up that takes all of 5 seconds of user time per 10 hours of computer usage.

Or someone doesn't have admin rights readily available.

And to adress how people work with computers, techies are the 1%. Everyone owns a computer now, but not even 10% of them understand what physical pieces of the computer do what ( ram, hdd, etc). That's basic knowledge to anyone who really knows how to use and care for a computer. Admin isn't hard in windows 7 either, click yes whenever something pops up... And it works.

You should have x56 and x86 folders too... Everything users do go to x86 iirc...so place them there

You cannot write into subfolders of program files. Its fucking retarded. I want to mod some games. Or simply move shit. Instead it makes me go through a pile of bullshit to actually do what i want. Now if you try to use some patcher that tries to write whatever into the game folder, it will get a fuckign error cus they dont have access. Running in administrator mode is a fucking joke. It doesnt do shit lol.

Im using windows 7 home edition which is apparantly made for old ladies and housewives, so i cannot even turn off this obnoxious file protection bullshit. I shoudl just pirate the professional edition but i dont wanna reinstall everything. Honestly. I've never been this frustrated in a long time. I mean last time i was trying to do something for Europa universalis 3 a while back and found out that they cannot even fucking save the game in program files. LOL. The save games go into some fucking hidden temporary folder in some obscure ass directory cus motherfucking windows doesnt give access to save in the games own fucking directory. OK THAT MAKES ALOT OF SENSE.

No. Home edition is bullshit. It doesnt actually give you full administrative rights EVEN WITH UAC TURNED OFF. I have ONE account on my comp. It says administrator. I am still restricted in doing the most mundane tasks.

No, STARTER edition is bullshit. Trust me... I'm not ponying up the money for my netbook for a few features but it is annoying as hell.

Could you specifically post what the computer is popping up for specific tasks?

What hes talking about is that u cannot put anything on the harddrive folder directly, this is annoying as hell since for instance certain programs make temp files(WinRAR) directly on C: while exporting, and Windows just blocks it. Doesn't matter if u have admin rights, still blocks it. I havent figured out how to solve this yet, kinda forgotten about it. I have proffessional edition btw.

Just the fact that some exe patchers cant get access to this folder. But im just pissed at the fact that i even have to go through this when I should have unrestricted access to all folders as administrator. I mean it took me a bit to even comprehend that windows would deny me access to program folders lol. I mean if its windows directory or soemthing, I might understand. After failing with morrowind and EU3, i just installed and modded them outside the programs folder a long time ago. Then i found out about UAC and turned that shit off which gave me a bit more freedom but its still restricted in some cases. I thought everything would be cool now and installed kotor 2 in program folder. Turns out its still fucked so im reinstalling it somewhere else :/

Yeah come on, this isn't a problem at all. Program Files is for programs to put stuff, not for you. You have your own C:\Users folder for your stuff. Keep your stuff and programs separate, there's no reason at all to be manually messing around in Program Files folders.

When will windows make xp system again. I miss the simple days, but having to disable all security settings for installing/changing programs is a hassle for the first 15 minutes. After you disable windows from being gay its all better.

x86 folder is for non-64 bit applications. Then the folder simply titled 'Program Files' is for 64-bit apps. As far as I know anyway.

Also, you can disable most of those pop-ups. I have to go to work so I don't have time to explain how, but just have a fiddle. They are pretty fucking annoying to be honest.

The great R1CH has spoken.

Further, the only time I ever have issue writing to games I installed into Program files (modding for example) I only find I cannot unzip extract files straight to program files. I extract to desktop then cut/paste and my mod is installed.

Agree with OP. I know it's frustrating, but I recommend formatting and installing Windows Ultimate. If you're not 80 years old, then you will come out ahead if you can administrate your own PC.

I initially struggled with Windows 7 when I converted from Linux. I got really discouraged, but I decided to tough it out because I need Windows to play most games (I used Wine for a while, but that doesn't work for Steam) and most engineering applications are written for Windows.

Just wanted you to know that I feel your pain, dude.

That's a little naive, don't you think?

I've moved savegames from one place to another using it. I've edited some .ini files to change various things. I've installed mods, uninstalled mods, installed no-cd patches after a CD broke, fished out screenshots, transferred settings files from one machine to another, and even backed up the giant multi-GB file that Guild Wars saves all its stuff in so I wouldn't have to re-download it on a new machine I wanted to install it on.

On any machine that's mine, I should be able to directly change whatever I want, and deal with the consequences if I break shit. My programs are *mine*, and if I want to fiddle with them, I should be able to. On my linux machine it's "sudo whatever" (or "sudo nautilus <path>" if I like clicking on shit), on my windows 7 machine I've managed to uncheck all the "hide XYZ from user" boxes, and on this mac I have to use for work -- well, fucked if I know, I dislike OSX with a fiery burning passion. But if I can't actually do these things, then it's not my machine -- it belongs to whoever actually has root on it.

I don't have any experience with OP's problem, since I've not had that much trouble with Win7. But I definitely agree that he ought to be able to have unrestricted read/write access to his own damn filesystem. If he breaks something by meddling it's his own problem.

I'm okay with my computer saying "It looks like you might be about to break something, are you sure you want to do this?", so long as the options "Yes" and "Yes, and fuck off next time" are options.

The main problem I have with Windows 7 so far is one thing in the international versions (or at least the norwegian version).

In this version they have translated the "program files" folder in the explorer to the norwegian word "programfiler". This makes it so that the folder is actually called "program files", but it shows up in the explorer (and therefore a few apps pick it up as) "programfiler". It have caused quite some bugs in various programs, and afaik can't be removed.

Fortunately I haven't been forced to use the norwegian version yet. :p

Save games, screenshots, ini files, etc are user data, not program data and don't belong in the Program Files hierarchy in the first place. If you're using old programs that don't respect the Windows file system guidelines then yes you may need to mess around in Program Files, but Windows is usually smart enough to figure out that these programs are trying to save user data to the wrong place and it silently redirects it to a virtual folder in your user account ("Show compatibility files" is what it's called in Explorer).

And of course you can change whatever you like - turn off UAC and set the permissions to allow full control, but then you're on your own when you break something and you've also removed some security by allowing everything to run at full administrator level permissions.

I have a(n old) game installed in program files and it can be easily customized by swapping out image files, altering the text files, etc. I'm not allowed to do so. Instead, I have to make working copies on my desktop and edit things there, and then copy those over into my game folder and then UAC let's me choose to overwrite - but if I edit directly, I can't save.

It can be pretty annoying when I'm tinkering with single configuration values and I have to go through 3-4 steps just to change a flag from 0 to 1.

yes. That is exactly my problem. I had no problem with the popups and stuff. I kept it around for a long time until i realized how much im restricted even after clicking Yes. Even with UAC turned off, you cannot directly edit config files and the likes and save it directly in the folder. If you try to patch the game with some exe file that moves files to folders and edits some .ini, it will give an error.

I think this is actually a problem with non profesional/ultimate. You can actually disable all the stupid shit and get full control in those versions afaik.

And i thought rich was being sarcastic with his first post
No matter how you look at it, having protections in place that cannot be disabled no matter what is not good programming.
