Not to rain on your parade or anything, but aren't schools in Europe and North America better than those in Japan?

I don't know what you're studying but it seems to me that getting your Phd in a top tier school back home makes more sense.

Japan has great schools that are internationally recognized.

Also, your time there would be justified no matter what considering you'll have the chance to meet MANLYfesto.

If you don't know, I'd go for the Masters and use that time to reflect on a PhD. It's a commitment, not something you wanna just go with the flow with. If you make an impression on your advisor, chances are he'll want you back for a PhD, and if you don't make a good impression, chances are you shouldn't be doing it (with him atleast).

When I entered my Masters I had no clue what I was gonna do 2 years later (well, it took me 3 years, but I didn't know at the time!). When anyone asked me whether I was planning on doing a PhD, I'd shrug my shoulders. Nearing my graduation, when people asked me, I was like hell naw.

I personally wouldn't lock myself into a PhD. Masters was fun, I really enjoyed it, so I'd say spend some time to think about it some more. None of us can tell what you want to do in the future, and I bet not even you can tell! Think it over some more

Japan wouldn't be on my top choices to live in overseas as a first timer. It definitely takes time to get used to the new culture there. It's also expensive as hell. I would only recommend it if your scholarship covers your housing and utilities, or if you are financially stable.

Why don't you do a Ph.D. here in the states? I got my Ph.D. in Genetics and Development at UT Southwestern Medical Center. It took me 6 years but I got paid 27K / year the entire time. Everyone gets paid the entire time. Also, full health, dental, vision plans. Also, I skipped master's. Most people in my class skipped master's too.

And, since UT Southwestern has no undergraduate program (kinda like UCSF), I didn't even have to teach or anything. I just got paid to do my research.

Quick update: http://i.imgur.com/ypgWm.jpg

So I received the official letter of acceptance and they are going to recommend me to MEXT for the scholarship.
Now I need to make sure to graduate this summer while waiting to hear from the Japanese government!

I'm quite happy right now, put up the letter on the wall in front of my pc so I can get the extra motivation boost whenever I need it!

I started working on my application in August last year and there were times where it seemed undoable, I'm so glad I stuck with it and just gave my best.

Hard choice. Five years is a big commitment for a country that you do not know. However, if you can get a full ride for five years... tough spot!

If you can take the two and reapply, then maybe that is the better route?? Still, hard to turn down free $$

I am a current MEXT scholarship student and have to recommend the experience!

I just got an extension for my initial 3 years and will now enter an university here in Japan.

Congrats on the recommendation!

I'm going for a Master in Comp Sci, my research proposal revolves around eye tracking in games/computer interfaces.

I'm going to study IT at Osaka Prefectural University from April this year.

As I really like it here, I'm considering whether I want to prolong my stay further beyond the planned five years.

Thanks I'm quite excited.
So much to figure out before I leave. I reckon the next half year is going to be stressful and exciting.
