+ Show Spoiler +
About 2 years ago my wife and I were on a cruise through the western Mediterranean aboard a Princess liner.
At dinner we noticed an elderly lady sitting alone along the rail of the grand stairway in the main dining room. I also noticed that all the staff, ships officers, waiters,
busboys, etc., all seemed very familiar with this lady.
I asked our waiter who the lady was, expecting to be told that she owned the line, but he said he only knew that she had been on board for the last four cruises, back to back.
As we left the dining room one evening I caught her eye and stopped to say hello. We chatted and I said, "I understand you've been on this ship for the last four cruises".
She replied, "Yes, that's true. It's cheaper than a nursing home".
After talking with her, I decided there will be no nursing home in my future. When I get old and feeble, I am going to get on a Princess Cruise Ship.
The average cost for a nursing home is $200 per day. I have checked on reservations at Princess and I can get a long-term discount and senior discount price of $135 per day. That leaves $65 a day for:

1. Gratuities, which will only be $10 per day.

2. I will have as many as 10 meals a day if I can waddle to the restaurant, or I can have room service (which means I can have breakfast in bed every day of the week).

3. Princess has as many as three swimming pools, a workout room, free washers and dryers, and shows every night.

4. They have free toothpaste and razors, and free soap and shampoo.

5. They will even treat you like a customer, not a patient. An extra $5 worth of tips will have the entire staff scrambling to help you.

6. I will get to meet new people every 7 or 14 days.

7. T.V. broken? Light bulb need changing? Need to have the mattress replaced? No Problem! They will fix everything and apologize for the inconvenience.

8. Clean sheets and towels every day, and you don't even have to ask for them.

9. If you fall in the nursing home and break a hip, you are on Medicare; if you fall and break a hip on the Princess ship, they will upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life.
Now hold on for the best! Do you want to see South America, the Panama Canal, Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, or name where you want to go?

Princess will have a ship ready to go. So don't look for me in a nursing home, just call shore to ship.
PS: And don't forget, when you die, they just dump you over the side at NO EXTRA CHARGE!

After reading the spoiler, I got to thinking could this really be possible? I just did a quick google search and it does avg about 200$ a day in a nursing home while a cruise ship is significantly cheaper per day. However, i feel like if it was as simple as this, then other people would have done it so is there a catch to this???

You're overlooking medical care that nursing homes provide, but if you're healthy, makes sense :p

Never thought of it before. Sounds a hell of a lot better then those shitty nursing homes, that's for sure.

If you're healthy, you can just as easily move into a senior living complex like my grandma did. Showers/bathroom facilities are configured specifically for seniors, they do community activities, and have the alert button thingies in each room that can call for help. She's maybe paying lik 800 or maybe a bit more per month for a two bedroom.
I like the way the walls go out. Gives you an open feeling. Firefly's a good design. People don't appreciate the substance of things. Objects in space. People miss out on what's solid.

yea you are forgetting about medical expenses. If you are healthy it is a good idea.

If you are not you need full service care. Such as someone helping you in and out of bed, checking your blood sugar or whatever, help you going to the bathroom.

You only go in a nursing home (not a senior community which is much cheaper) if you need full time care. You have to be able bodied and minded to go on a cruise for the rest of your life.

Nursing homes provide everything for you. they can literraly spoon feed you if you can't eat.

I think you need to differentiate a retirement home from a nursing home. People in nursing homes typical require some sort of medical / nursing assitance. You might as well just have opened a thread "lolol it's cheaper to live at home why do these idiots move to nursing homes?"

Yeah I'm pretty sure that no amount of tips will have the staff on any cruise ship help you change your diapers or wipe after you're done using the bathroom if you can't do it. That is why a nursing home costs more. And you don't have to tip the nurses that take care of you either

You also need to consider sea legs. The human body can only stand to be on the sea for so long while staying healthy. There is a reson to way sailors only have 1-3 weeks onboard and then a week of rest inland. Again you need to consider the healthcare in a nursing home. So my thought? Bad Idea.

My grandma lives in a very luxurious appartment building for retirees. It has a medical clinic, pool, gym, 1 free meal a day and a staff that fulfills any reasonable requests. It costs her 2000$ per month which comes down to 65$ a day. To echo a lot of people in this thread if you read the average was 200$, surely this was for homes where the staff needs to feed, clean and carry you.

And finally let's not forget about the fact that in a nursing home there is a 0 percent chance of the terror of having to crawl on your hands and knees on the ceiling of your nursing home hallway in complete darkness to some dingy in order to save your life all because your douchebag nursing home captain decided to show off for some of his old nursing home captains that he used to work with.

Actually after a while the human body gets used to being at sea. My dad is a fisherman and he spends months at sea sometimes without and problems, sometime she prefers it out there T_T

People are in nursing homes because they are sick and feeble as well. This is not a legitimate alternative for most people, what if you have a heart attack on one of those things? are they gonna keep paying for the helicopter to come get you to a hospital?

There's quite a difference between retiring and moving into a nursing home.

Also, personally, I don't find the prospect of living on a cruise ship for the rest of my life particularly enticing.

well thats the thing, you don't have to live on a cruise ship for the rest of your life. You can take a week off to go somewhere else, visit family, etc you aren't bound to a nursing home as long as your healthy
