So the Republican debate is on, and my dad is half-watching the Television as usual. Keep in mind that my dad's usual state of consciousness consists of:
- Laying down on the sofa
- Laptop is on his belly with various right-wing political sites determined to "expose left-wing political bias."
- Fox News on; the volume is at a level that I can hear it from my room upstairs.
- A radio on with Glenn Beck or some other Fox News station on.
- Is only in his underwear.
Guess what kind of person my dad is! And he is 55 years-old so that makes it even better!
So I'm doing some random stuff in the kitchen (which means I can hear the TV loud and clear), and Mitt Romney says something about "blah blah...We shouldn't be going to a European welfare state...blah blah" This is a good cue to amuse myself.
I try asking my dad, "Why is a European welfare state a bad thing? They're doing the best in terms of economy and almost everything else."
My dad promptly responds, "It's because they're a small country..." Okay, pause this narration for a little while. The craziest thing is going through my head the moment he said this. Why? Because he just said something that made sense. Based on my description above, it should be obvious that this is a rare occurrence...but then he interrupts my thoughts by continuing...
"And dey have no Military to defend themselves. We needa pratect dere asses."
"But, they're part of the European Union."
"Pft, the Eurozone is about to collapse. *recites some statistic about Greece's debt* You'll about to see riots in the streets; the muslims are taking over!"
Well, I'm not surprised. This is my dad being himself. Takes one topic and somehow always manages to reroute it to either Muslims or Black People. But this typical rant of his is missing one of his typical traits: Apocalyptic Prophecy! Oh wait...
He continues, "*recites a random statistic about American debt* We're going to shit! The whole thing is going to collapse."
...so now I can add my 184th tally to my "Consecutive Weeks my Dad has Said The Global Economy Will Collapse" Paper Regardless, I still love my dad...even if he is insane.
|
Ha! Nice read...
The scary part is when you realise your vote counts the same as his. At least he keeps you interested
|
184 weeks... wow, that's some delusion.
Out of curiosity, what does he get out of it? Is it like cheering for a sports team? Does it have something to do with his life circumstances?

Good blog Need more awesome anecdotes and less boring SC2 status updates up in this forum. The whole blogs economy is about to collapse!

Imo the whole economy IS about to collapse but still due to not enough regulation, as far as i understand everything that caused the last crash is still happening in the usa, i don't know shit about other european nations than sweden but it wouldn't surprise me if they follow suit as always edit: oh shit i did it again well nothing too inflammatory this time and we're all good!

r u high? Eurozone crisis, Greece, etc.
But I get your point. Your dad sounds like a real treat. People with extremely strong and vehement political beliefs in either direction are just aggravating.

r u high? Eurozone crisis, Greece, etc. Greece problems have mostly to do with their high levels of corruption. I'd guess that welfare states only works if corruption also is low like in northern Europe.

I forgot to put that I meant Scandinavian countries, and I wasn't being serious...I just wanted to get my dad to say something.

I guess something that could be argued is which systems are more likely to create corruption, though :o I had to read Madison's 10th essay about the constitution in which he suggested a republic lowers corruption the most, but it was all theorycraft if we're completely honest. The American government system ain't exactly low on corruption either. I would go on but TBH it probably needs its own thread. Actually an interesting topic tho.

Lol clearly you live in the Midwest.
Still though, people on the far left are just as crazy. I know someone who honestly believes that the Occupy movement is going to lead to a global socialist revolution, and all political policies that are not taxing the rich are racist and destroying the middle class.
When people (left or right) spend all their time listening/reading to political discourse that they agree with, it enforces their belief that their positions and opinions are all 100% right and everyone who disagrees with them is either stupid or evil.

Actually, I live in the extreme Southern Part of Louisiana (Cajun). I didn't put too much effort into typing out my dad's dialect though.
And yes, I agree that far left people are probably equally insane. I just never dealt with an extreme leftist person because of my geographical location.

I'm not sure. He used to be a hippie (even has a butterfly tattoo on his shoulder lol), but IDK what made him go from leftist to rightist

well thank god they took Glenn Beck off of Fox News. It used to be really bad since Glenn Beck was inherently loud. I used to wake up from naps with shouts of "COMMUNIST MUSLIMS SOCIALIST OBAMA!!!". it didn't put me in the best of moods lol
