So he cant win with marien/tank --> he doesn't want to do that build and wants to rely on other builds. This is just a bad midnset (unless you have no plan to become good long-termish).

I guess a lot of people will say that the time was different back then and that all terrans did gimmick stuff. This isn't true, at january terrans were learnign to play solid. Back at summer 2010 (and beta), yeh all terrans did stupid shit, like opening cloack banshee vs toss every game and hoping their builds were unsafe and that they could not multitask, or they would take late expansions vs zerg and allin every other game. But in january 2011 most terran players were trying to learn a solid approach, yet carn did stuff that was so allinsh / harassbased --> relying on opponents mistakes.

I think what carn wanted to try and do, was do get really good at executing his weird gimmicky builds, and hence getting an advantage over opponents who were not used to deal with them. This can obv. be a fine strategy, as long as you admit that this is your gameplan, and realize that you are relying on opponents mistakes.
