How long has it been since you began trying to work in eSports? How did you first make your start, were you running small tournaments, or working under someone else?

Does ESV gain enough popularity to sustain itself or even reap any financial benefit that is enough to sustain yourself as well as a living or do you simply do it because of passion?

How active has ESV been in lobbying MLG/IPL/Dreamhack/etc to use your maps? What exactly did it take to get Testbug into the MLG pool? Do you think 2012 will be better in terms of the map pool?

Also do you think it would be better for there to be a universally used map pool, or should NASL/IPL/MLG all act unilaterally in deciding their maps and take a more laissez faire approach?

I asked this in the hijacked AMA, but I'll repeat it so that all the questions are here -

How good are you at SC2, and how important is actual competency at the game for managers and/or journalists?
(A particular example is Slasher, who has said that he played about 1-2 actual games of SC2 but often likes to make GSL predictions and talks about the game a lot)

When I started in E-Sports it was nothing more then a cool side project "iCCup TV". I started roughly 18 months ago give or take.

There is some financial benefit, but not enough to fully support me, I pay a lot of my own bills out of some money I had saved. But I love this job.

Hopefully with more awareness to the Korean Weekly the financial end will improve.

I have been VERY active and probably most tourney admins hated me for awhile with how active I was. To get Testbug in I flew and stayed at MLG DC (thanks to Haemonculus for giving me a place to stay) and just kept pushing until I happened to meet Lee. I pushed the maps to him, and he said "let's talk". The rest is history. I think 2012 will be better as long as the public demand keeps up.

Universal pool would be the best, but really the scene is not ready for it yet. That should be like a goal for 3-4 years out.

I'm just going to copy paste my original answer.

"I have been Diamond with Protoss (ironic I know) since Diamond came around. Never really got much farther due to a lack of time.

I have recently picked up Zerg a couple weeks ago and have made Top 1% Plat un less then 50 games. I should have switched a long time ago.

As for managers, that depends on your role within the team. Journalists should have a firm grasp on the game, but since ladder ranking is meaningless it's just more what you know vs how you can execute it."

One more question before I head off!

Since you run the Korean Weekly you would have seen some less known players that don't really get the attention they deserve, who is a player that you feel is very talented but has yet to make their mark yet?

Since you decided that you were going to just post a Reddit AMA and not answer anything or post a link to the TL thread here is the question I posted on the Reddit thread.

Where is your base of operations? Also, do you believe there is room in this world for a starcraft/marijuana enthusiast group? Maybe some sort of event like a barcraft but you get stoned instead of drunk?

Also, sorry to have so many questions packed into one but how did you develop so many contacts in the Korean and formerly the Chinese scene (before the controversy involving that).

I think it's growing and looking good and can for sure become as big as real sports. However most people seem to want to rush this too much, people need to look at MMA and the long road they had. Many lessons can be learned from MMA and the UFC on proper growth.

"The Impossible Win", best game I think in the weekly ever. All other vods are at www.esvtv.com and there is too many great games to list. I feel like actually some of the fans or Orb could answer this question better then myself.

I am based out of Michigan. I think like anything of course there is "room" for it. I don't know if "bongcraft" is the best idea per se tho.

As for the contacts, lots of luck and perseverance. For Korea TorcH was one of the biggest helping hands, and China I did all on my own.

How happy were you to hear that Cloud Kingdom made it into the GSL AoL map pool? Do you think that this could be the end of Korean Map Maker Dominance within the GSL? Have you talked to, or are planning on talking to GOM to try and get some of the other ESV maps in the regular GSL seasons?
Also, do you plan on asking foreigners staying in Korea to participate in the weekly?

Absurdly happy. I spent the better part of probably 100 hours this year arguing with Mr Chae and Gisado on why our maps deserve to be in the GSL, and it finally went though. I would love as many of our maps in GSL as possible, but at this second Cloud Kingdom is the only one being discussed.

Foreigners are more then welcome, just most don't want to join.

Meh, I lost a lot of interest in Basketball a long time ago. The amount of gross acting these days to draw penalties is just stupid.

Copied from the original AMA:

Me and Greg are actually pretty tight I think. We officially met at MLG DC 2010, and since then have hung out every live event I have been to.

I have a lot of respect for him and like him quite a bit.

Also fun side story, I was the one that found him sleeping in the booth at IPL 3 and went and told Scoots.

Way better then expected. It's a Top 5 or so online tournament viewership wise with great production and great players. very satisfied.

I always want more tournaments but I am going to make sure the Korean Weekly is 100% running right before I start new ones. I like to do things 100% right and be able to focus on them. Will cover any TL Opens for sure if they are in 2012, one of the best run tournaments I have ever seen.

Yes.

Mods should add a filter so that anyone who mentions feet gets instabanned, though I don't think they'll try the same crap on TL.

Anyways, I have two questions:

If you could make Blizzard do one thing for SC2, what would it be?

and how about those ESV maps on SEA?

What are your thoughts on the sudden influx of Korean streamers?

Do you have any comments about how many of them get very few viewers? Do you think it says something about the community when really bad, popular foreigners get thousands of viewers whereas someone amazing like TSL.Revival peaks at 200?

It's good and unbelievable for someone that was a BW fan to see Korean pros streaming.

I think the Koreans are still running what I call "generation 1 streams". No production, no commentary, no anything. Just music and play. The scene has evolved and they need to up their game if they want more viewers. Also need to stop being terrified of trying to speak English.

I don't really know if you can get more tournaments then there are now. I think however a lot of companies are too focused on making new types of tournaments non stop instead of perfecting what they have.

It's one reason I really like IGN/IPL. They take one idea and will work with it for months until it's perfect before they create something else new.

Cool. I got some new news indeed!

The Korean Weekly will be undergoing several structural changes in 2012, the main one being the Monthly Finals have been scrapped.

It will be replaced by the ESV TV/Twitch TV Grand Prix. They will run once every eight weeks of play and will contain a total of 36 players! The Top 4 from each weekly will be seeded into the Grand Prix as well as 4 invites (2 foreigner invites, 2 previous champion invites). It will be a double group stage play into an 8 man single elim bracket. Exact format details will be soon.

The best part, the Grand Prix will have a $2,000 prize pool!!!!!! The weeklies will remain at $200 at this time.

Edit: The Top 4 from the previous 4 weeklies are now seeded into the Grand Prix #1. So only 4 more weeks for players to qualify!

How do you get a job in the business if your not a writer or a professional gamer? What kind of entry level jobs exist?

I am glad you asked this. One common misconception is the word "job" in E-Sports. VERY VERY VERY VERY few people in E-Sports make any kind of money doing so, I would say at least 95% of E-Sports is volunteer.

If that is not a problem with you, just try contacting smaller websites/teams/etc and offer to help out. Very few orgs are big enough that they do not need anyone.

After that just put in the work, very very few people in this industry just "walk in", they start somewhere small and work up.

What are the upcoming plans for the coming year regarding the korean weekly(I dont read twitter so i missed that you could answer this now!)

I'm super excited for this. omg . . . =D

If MLG isn't making money, who is? Dreamhacks model with so many participants seems to be a working model?

MLG recently cut staff, is that a sign of the bubble?

What is the perception of the foreign players in Korea? Why does DRG and Nestea not join QxG?

How important are the casters to your production and to Esports in general? Why are the top casters making more money than the players?

Are you planning to learn korean?

Give us the inside scoop on the BW pros. When will we see Flash in Code A?

Do you have any dreams of going pro?

Why does America have only one top player who can take games off koreans while Sweden has 10?

You said Korean streamers are first generation streams, how come they all still get featured on TL, while western players beside the known ones, have to languish in non featured land?

What will your production look like in 6 months from now?

1: I don't know that, Dreamhack seems to have a sweet setup but idk if they are making money.

2: No, not at all.

3: It's good. Why would they join QxG?

4: Casters are very important. Also when people bitch about top casters making more they don't realize that's a select group of 7 or so individuals. All other casters are not as well off.

5: I am trying, that shit is hard.

6: No idea, but I don't see it happening soon, it's the same reason most boxers don't go to MMA, new sport with less guaranteed money. I have been wrong before however .

7: Sometimes, but I realize I am way too far behind mechanic wise. It is appealing but I think I will stick to what I am doing.

8: There's more then one. HuK and IdrA obv. QXC all killed IM, Gatored can't seem to lose to Koreans, etc.

9: Korean players have the skill. Also being they are new to this the low level of production should be expected. If they want to break the glass ceiling they have to up their game on production, commentary, etc.

10: Hopefully it will be much better then now, I am always looking for new ways to improve. Hoping to have more video content like intros, match breakdowns, etc.

Why are you doing this on new years eve/afternoon, literally the worst time possible?

But on a more serious note, what are your thoughts on JYP joining EG or more generally, Koreans joining foreign teams?

Also, (I hope this hasn't been asked before) any new year resolutions? :D

Hehe I had nothing to really do and I thought it could be in interesting day for it.

I think it's good for both EG and JYP. JYP has some of the best PvZ and PvP I have ever seen combined with sick micro. Now in the SlayerS house I am sure his PvT will get MUCH better. Top notch pickup for EG.

Not really, just keep on keeping on.

I have been VERY active and probably most tourney admins hated me for awhile with how active I was.

If you could repeat and be present in any big SC2 tournament (all MLGs, GSLs...) from last year, which one would you chose??

I would love more then anything to see a live GSL. However every MLG and IPL 3 were absurd fun.

Yes, it's a lack of a restream machine atm holding us up. It's been a very high priority for me for a long time.

Are you in contact with any of the Chinese leagues about maps (gleague) for example, since a lot of the players state that the Chinese tournaments consist of ladder maps.

Not really. I don't know anyone in G-League and refuse to work with the previous group I was working with. As I mentioned before (maybe it was on Reddit) the Chinese scene needs to stop secluding itself to grow.

if I remember correctly the latest weekly had Chinese participants (if not earlier ones had to), did they sign up like anyone else or do they have some contact with you?

(you mentioned in the esv 2012 monthly thread about trying to get seeds for foreign events, it would be really interesting to see some Chinese players at foreigner events).

I have a Chinese contact that knows all the players, but afaik does not know a lot of the admins. However I will have to ask, you bring up a good point.

I've got 2 questions (with subquestions): What exactly was your relationship with Iccup when you were doing Iccup.TV? How did you get involved with ICCup? Were you ever involved with their ladder and antihack operations, or were you solely there for iccup TV?

The second one is, Have you ever done Mafia at a major Starcraft event? If not, how willing would you be to play?

iCCup TV was a company I started just working for, and when it dissolved I was majority owner.

I got involved with iCCup as a forum admin back in BW.

Forum mod into iCCup TV only.
