From the very beginning of Sc2-Beta, i played Protoss since almost every good WarcraftIII – Undead (thats what i played before) switched to Protoss as well. Slowly, i climed my way up to the Platinum league – the highest league there was.
When the game came out, i was quite a decent player and reached almost 4000 points in the first Master Season. I didnt play many cups, i just laddered and tried to win as much as possible, using quite cheesy strats.
In season 2, GML came out and i immediatly got in. Since you couldnt drop out of GM, i decided to play almost exclusivly macro-games to get better in both, macro and mutlitasking, since i concider my micro very good already. Time went by, i got quite decent at macro/multitasking and even though i finished quite low in GML, i maintained my spot in GML in Season 3.
In Season 3, i finished a bit higher, still quite low though and i had a good mix of macro-games and cheese. Since i was convinced i'd stay GML no matter what, i played less and less Sc2. The less i played the game, the more i feared to play ladder in general. And with more Ladderfear, i started to play shorter games and only maintain a low Bonus-Pool.
In Season 4 suddenly, i didnt make GML – that didnt help my „ladder-fear-problem“ at all. So what i basically did was cheesing my way up in the highest Master-Ranks, not playing any games when i thought my MMR was high enough to get into GML, finishing top 25 in the European Master-League overall – i had more points than the „1340“ blizzard claimed to be GM-like.
Season 5 started, i played about 50 games (not rly a lot) with about 55% stats when GM started on Wednesday. I was convinced to make GM, but again, my ladder-fear striked and just when GM started, i cheesed my way to a 0-6 score, lowering my MMR immensly.
Just yesterday, i played my first PvT macro-game in ages and won it pretty convincingly and i thought „wtf, why dont u just always play normal“
Now that I am in master-league and i dont feel like making GM with my current play anymore, I decided to do what i did in Seasons 2 and 3 and do the following things:
Play almost exclusively macro-games.
Start to play more games ffs – not only 1 per day as in the last 2 seasons!
Dont try to get into GML no matter what, it will probably come naturally
If you dont make GML – who cares? Most ppl know high master players are good as well. Furthermore, you dont have any intention of earning money with this game anyway!
Simply said: HAVE FUN.
Sry for my so-so english, but I had in mind to write sth like that for a long time to share my story with other ppl.
GL!
