Hello, .
My name is Girit(no not my firstname), Girit is my lastname and my handle. I plan to be playing starcraft2, about 10-12 hours a day maybe more. I am on my PC from 11 AM - 11 PM every day, usually earlier than 11 AM, but that is the latest time I wakeup to hopon the PC. I recently started competing in Playhems, Won my first few rounds but lost to some good players. I am a gold player currently rank #1 on NA.
Some intro stuff, Season 1 I was a crap bronze player who knew nothing pretty much. You can watch some of my youtubes over at youtube.com/GiritTV, my first 2 weeks of playing starcraft seriously and trying to get somewhere, it took me two weeks of massing to get to silver finally.(season 2).
Okay some typos, I started in season 2. So Season 2 I was bronze, the end of season 2 I was silver. The start of season 3 I was still silver, but I got promoted to gold recently. Then I got dropped because I switched race to zerg, and then terran etc etc. I am now back to my original choice, Protoss. I am gold rank #1, beating and facing top platinum players. I am currently on I think a 12 or somethign win streak. I lost 3 games total the last few days, one was my net disconnecting and the other two, I just messed up. One was a roach-allin and until recently I had no clue how to counter that but now I can counter it fine.
I am 18, and dropped out of school to fulfill my dream. I'm sure you can guess what that is.
So I bought my new gaming rig to help me out, my specs are an intel core i5 2500k, 3.3ghz I have an ATI HD 57701gb, 4GB DDR3 ram, I recently bought G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428) which will help me out with the minor lagish I get while listening to pandora, and having 3000 windows open etc while I stream and sit on my computer etc lol. I also bought Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000 USB 2.0 720p HD widescreen video webcam (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826105420) So I can have one of those cool player cams, I'm no model etc so I don't expect everyone to watch my stream just to see my awesome face etc. But I will be streaming a lot. my link is Twitch.TV/GiritTV, I expect 1-2 viewers, one me, one my laptop. If that even counts that way. But I always have my stream open on both.
I work on my laptop, so I figure why not have my stream open, so when I am ingame I can respond to your messages etc. I think that's about everything that needs to be said today. >_> So yeah.. end of blog, thanks for reading, thanks for skipping to the bottom and not reading if you did that. Just some nonsense, it's a blog anyhow I'm not Athene playin da gaimz etc having fans. Someday maybe ;o
-end of blog message- 12/8/2011

With respect, you can attain a higher ladder ranking without dropping out of school.

Even though I don't support your decision, ill just say this
good luck!

Hey girit, a good way to test if you have the stuff to go pro (because its really hard, there is a reason not everyone is one!) is to commit yourself fulltime for a month.
You should:
Be playing sc2 1v1 (NOT reading reddit, watching vods, etc) 5 days per week, 8 hours per day.
You should be aiming for a MINIMUM of 30 1v1 games per day. Most pros play up to 60 on an average day. This means you should be able to play a MINIMUM of 600 1v1 games within the next 30 days. If you can't maintain that kind of practice schedule sadly you will not be able to play at a high level .
Also by the end of the month of doing this you should be high masters (above 900 points) at least. If you are lower it might mean you just dont have the raw APM sadly to be a pro.
I'd suggest doing this for a month and if you can do all of the above you have a great shot! Good luck.
If you can't no worries, its not the right lifestyle for a lot of people. I'm sure that as a high school dropout you can find another great job like working at Denny's or some such .

Dropping out of school to do SC2 full-time when your rank is gold/plat is an objectively terrible decision.
EDIT: Hell, dropping out of school to do SC2 full-time when your rank is GM is a terrible decision.

What is going on with all of these "I'm gold and going pro" blogs lately??? I know there have been many in the past but this is like the third one today. Quite honestly I don't understand why anyone would want to be a pro-gamer. I would never want my hobby to become my job. The beauty of a hobby is that you do it for fun. A job is something you do for money. If someone is willing to pay you to do something (your employer) there is usually a reason why and it's not because they just love you so much that they want you to have fun.
Anyways as far as your aspirations, the community will set you straight so I'll just say this: Chill for prime minister!!!

this has to be a joke. especially with the blog right below yours. if it isnt a joke, you'll learn more important stuff in school than playing some video game. but hey, if you want to spend your life playing games go for it. i knew a guy in WoW that dropped out of high school and regretted it. now he's roofing, and just playing games. you'll probably not go anywhere above low-income but if that suits you..

I hoped you dropped out of college and not high school to do this.

Hi Girit! There are a couple of critical posts that all people who are considering dropping out and/or dropping out of college to go pro should check out so they can be as effective as possible in life.
Let me recommend you this blog on the high respect I have for progamers: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=266837
And this recent blog about progamer lifestyle, passion, and inspiration: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=292871 (this one starts with a cool picture of BoxeR)
I recommend you read both of these and I hope you enjoy them.
Make sure to keep on making blog posts so we know how things go.

If you can't get in To Grandmaster while still in school You will not go pro.

I never read reddit, I go on these forums once a week max.

You didn't drop out of school to play SC2. You dropped out because you didn't like it. SC2 isn't a big enough part of your life yet to influence your major decisions, don't kid yourself.
Good luck going pro though. It will take seemingly forever, but with a lot of free time you can improve very fast!

It's easier to go back to college than high school
|
If he's 18 and in college, I assume he's a freshman in which dropping out can be his 1 year break between high school to college (still not ideal). See if actual progaming is what you really enjoy, and if not, you can enroll in school again without too much harm done. Maybe you can even get into the second half the semester instead of the next year.
dropping out of high school is like the worst idea ever, though. It's insanely easy to just pass and graduate if that's all you're aiming for, and at least have a high school degree to work the most basic jobs.

Dropped out of college -> no college degree. Available professions include anything that requires a high school diploma. Dropped out of high school -> no high school degree. Available professions include... mowing lawns and working fast food.

You don't quit school to become an NFL running back after being captain of the JV team at your high school.
hell, diamond is JV, gold is like 3rd string on JV
|
Good luck to you OP I suppose. But I'll chime in with the warnings, I don't think you should give up school so easily.
I know it would be impossible for me to go pro, yet even I picked up this game very quickly (possibly just from rts experience and watching and playing a little BW). I haven't played since beta but when I did, I won my placement matches etc etc.
I honestly think that if you can't even get yourself up into the top league (diamond I believe it is? not Masters since that requires other criteria) just by playing casually then there is no hope in hell for you. And even if you could, there's still no hope in hell for you.
Don't do something you'll later regret.

The top open league is Master League. GM League is only open 1 week per season, and is the top league overall.

Cheers! Think I'll go read about the league system, changes so much!

As everyone else is saying, please don't use this as an excuse to drop out of school. It doesn't sound like you're doing this because you love Starcraft so much that you're capable of playing it for 8-10 hours a day. It sounds like you're rationalizing your way out of an education. Please. Don't do it. I think you fail to understand how much this will mess up your life. I'll be blunt. You're not going to be a pro-gamer. GO TO SCHOOL!
|
Oh man it's so easy to troll TL
|
Why people actually want to make a living out of playing starcraft all day long I just can't understand. Sure it's a fun game and everything but to actually play like 12 hours a day.... that sounds horrible if you ask me
|
And i tought this would be a girl blog... but no it's a go pro blog.
Dissapointed
|
good luck, don't wish ill will.
Still though, people should follow Tyler's advice about going pro. The gist of it is: Find out whether you're good enough while maintaining your current life. If you are, and you're in the financial position where you're okay to try out pro-gaming for a trial period. Then give it a go.
|
This is so fucking ironic, im laughing so hard right now. <3 TL

I hate to say this, but if you're playing 11 hours a day since season one and only in gold league, you don't really have what it takes... school is definitely the smarter option.
I got to master's league season 3 while primarily focusing on school and playing max 3 hours a day. Granted, I was demoted at the end of it, but at one point I had improved enough to make it into that league while not sacrificing literally anything.
It's not a smart decision. You'll probably disagree with me, but you seriously need to rethink this.
|
You're young. You still have a chance to fuck around and still fix it. Fuck all the haters. If you have the passion for it, try it for the next year. Give it your all, playing a shitload of games, review VODs, try to get in touch with local teams and pros for advice, etc. Give it your fucking all the next year. And if you don't make it, go back to school, community college -> TAG program -> profession of your choice. TL;DR Give it your best try, but don't make it your be-all end all.

I don't think it is a troll, I think he is serious. I checked out his youtube channel and it does exist with him casting his own games.
And he is probably in college unless he is born in December or he missed/flunked a year of school.
I support you all the way as long as you understand what your getting into and what path you are taking. You are potentially screwing up your future.

Because TL is wise and wants to make him reverse a bad, bad decision.
In all likely, OP will quit after getting sick of SC2 or getting stuck in Plat/Dia and whine about imba all day and find out he can't get any good jobs.
"TL gives good advice 99% of the time, but no one listens." -Plexa according to a sig I saw the other day.

You didn't read my post I'm guessing.
I bought the game season 1, I played it for 2 days and quit to play Darkfall online MMORPG.
I came back season 2 for like 2-3 weeks massed, got from bronze to #1 silver. Quit again. I just came back a few weeks ago and am going serious. I got promoted to gold as protoss and played some games as zerg/random. I really like Terran, so I might switch to that.

Haha I got a good laugh out of this. I imagine this is a total troll blog. Well played sir.
