I would recommend No.20 to 24. Just pick one and listen. Then come back and tell me why it's not what you want and I will redirect you to something else. One coherent melody throughout the piece, if you really mean what I would interpret this to mean, can't be found in a full form classical piece. Classical music is all about form. development of harmony and transformation of melodies. Mahler, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Rachmaninoff, Bruckner are all dissonant. Dubpace, he's trying to do exactly that. I could recommend him some of my favorite pieces like Busoni's piano concerto, Sorabji's toccata or even Bach's WTC and tell him to give Giulio Cesare a try. But you need to get into classical music by finding what you like. When I came to classical from the rock-blues-jazz axis instrumental mostly guitar oriented music, what I listened for classical music was very limited. You have to start with what you like, not what you want to like. Taste is an excuse to not like good music. But even realizing this doesn't change the fact that everyone is going to have taste that you need to break down first. As for dissonant meaning atonal. Maybe that's what he means but I can only assume he means that his words mean. Dissonance and atonal are completely different terms. He'd probably still be able to enjoy any of the listed composers (to an extent) Yeah, there is a big difference between Modern and modern "Classical" music.

Digging Liszt lately. Maybe a bit dissonant in part 1, but 2 and 3 you may like. + Show Spoiler + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiElvzlH4jY It's got dissonance throughout, but not too heavily... I hope. If so, listen to part 2. Edit 2: It's pretty dissonant. Only listen to #2 haha.

His string quartets fit the "repetitive" and pleasant sounding genre

Basically you can listen to anything by Mozart, Brahms, Beethoven, Chopin, Grieg and so on. On a technical level, they are all pretty amazing, but I personally find Bach pretty lackluster.

+ Show Spoiler + This is quite a dark piece, but is one of my favourites. Rather dark piece as well, but still very good. I think this piece has been used many times in movies as 'Epic Music' Yet again, another dark piece. It's very amazing and really invokes emotion from me. I remember when I first heard I completely froze up when the epic part started. This piece is rather relaxing and soulful, I think. Definitely can be considered as 'Thinking Music'. Ah! Marching music is always nice to listen to. Nothing much to say about this, except AMAZING. Quite a famous piece, known for it's use in 2001 : A Space Odyssey From 20001 : A Space Odyssey too. Epic as well! This piece makes me tear up sometimes =`). Hope you don't mind the singing. A famous piece, and for a good reason. When I listen to this, it just makes me want to lay down on some grass in the warm summer day and gaze at the passing clouds. Listen to this, and you will always remember the tune. The Tannhauser Overture by Wagner is definitely worth a listen if you have the time. Of course, the famous 'Carmen' Suite is fantastic as well! Now, on to my favourite composer of all time, Tchaikovsky! You CANNOT miss this piece. Listen to it to the very end and just savour the music. This is only the finale of my favourite overture of all time. It's just SO good. How do you not know the Nutracker Overture?! There, if you need anything more modern, like mash-ups of classical pieces just ask.

Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night's Dream Smetana: The Moldau Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake, Pathetique (Symphony No.6), 1812 Overture Basically these (well, maybe except Pathetique) you can listen to and just flow along with the background story. You can be actively engaged, maybe with the help of a video-version of these music, or just relax and enjoy the music. My background is with piano so I would recommend a ton of piano concertos, but maybe for now, you should start with the above =)
