My dad is trying to sell his car and he got this email yesterday:

From: Greg Mark <redacted>
Date: Fri, Nov 11, 2011 at 9:27 PM
Subject: Re: lexus
To: <redacted>

Thanks for mailing back,i really appreciate it, am really interested in it.
i am buying this for my wife cause is our 1st yr anniversary, unfortunately i won't be around to celebrate with her. i really want this to be a surprise gift for my wife so i wont let her know anything about this until it gets delivered to her , i am sure she will be more than happy with it and i will appreciate it if you can send me more pictures if you have cause due to the nature of my job, phone calls making are restricted. I can't be able to come and view it and pay in cash but i have contacted a pick up company and they will be coming to pick it after i have paid for it,i can only pay through Paypal as i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i have my bank account attached to my PayPal account and this is why i insisted on paying you through PayPal,so kindly get back to me with your full name and paypal email address so i can proceed with the payment now, but if you don't have an account with them you can set up a paypal account via www.paypal.com it very easy and fast, it wont take you much time to do that,I will proceed with the payment as soon as you send me your paypal email address and contact the pick up agent to arrange a convenient pickup time with you, once payment has been transferred and cashed.

I believe i can trust you on this transaction cause i need a faithful and loyal person to transact business with.I hope to read back from you soon.
Thanks,
Robert

First off, his name is "Greg mark" but he signs it "Robert". Second, he can't make phone calls because of his job but he has internet to send this email. Third, his grammar is awful as fuck but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Fourth, he says he doesn't have access to his bank account online but has access to pay via paypal that is linked to his bank account.

Everything in this email sounds really phishy but I can't off the top of my head figure out if it's a scam or not. What do you guys think?

sounds like a scam

say you can only accept bank certified checks or something

Anybody who says "Cant give you my phone # and I can only use paypal" is a definite scam.

Scam yeah.
"I believe i can trust you on this transaction cause i need a faithful and loyal person to transact business with.I hope to read back from you soon." is the typical Nigerian scam bullshit.

Paypal scams used to be very easy because even after sending money to someones account you could claim 'scam' or 'goods never recieved' and paypal would credit the money back and trust the sender over the receiver.

Even without that history this is extremely shady, just ignore it --> 99% chance of scam.

Also this post + your ID makes me laugh.

The important thing to keep in mind is that they are telling you a story. People who deal with stuff online don't tell stories. People who are looking to gain your trust tell stories.

Some guy walks up to you, bums a cigarette, then begins to tell you about his woes in life with a long story... prepare for him to ask you for money. Same applies for internet scammers, except they don't wait for you to give it to them.
If it sounds good, it is good.

Yeah. Scam. I get these e-mails at work, and the clear sign of a scam is the discrepancy of the "From:" name and the signature name.

I dont know too much about paypal but how this kind of scam work?
If he sends the money on your dad's paypal account and then your dad immediately transfers it on his bank account how the scamer can recover his money? Isnt it a risky move from the scamer?

pretty sure there was a thread very similar to this a few months ago with some one asking the same question. Very similar scenario, had to use paypal as well. The english/wording is just way too bizarre for it to be a real person.

"phone calls making are restricted."

Nice try Greg Mark, Nice try.

It's a scam, he makes excuses or reasons before anything is really established (right?).
Already tells you what he can and cannot do, already sets up a "middleman" and as the above said: gives you a story.

What kind of backwater bank doesn't have internet banking?

Honestly, since it does look almost scam-like, why not respond bluntly why all these conditions?
I mean seriously, why cant he just walk into his bank(for example) and just wire the damn cash directly?

This is a scam. I once sold a car on the UK version of CL and got about 10 of these types of replies. Sometimes they were away in the military, saving lives in the amazon, or some other BS reason to not be available in person. In fact, the offer to have a company pick up the car, I think, is one of the exact scams that CL warns their users against in the posting rules. I would bet any amount of slashers hair this is an absolute scam.

To be fair some people are just too lazy to set up internet banking. But that’s not your problem it’s his if he’s genuine. If it sounds dodgy then just don't trust it, it's your money. Someone else will buy the car I'm sure.

Obvious scam is obvious:

"I believe i can trust you on this transaction cause i need a faithful and loyal person to transact business with.I hope to read back from you soon."

Only scammers end emails like this.

If you had any doubts this line puts them to rest. Only shady businessmen claim to be honest. and "I need a faithful and loyal person" "I hope to read back from you soon" Its pretty obviously What hes looking for and its not buying your car.

I always wonder why no phone calls. You did think that one scammer will find out that having phone calls will leave them at a competitive advantage. Pay-as-you-go phones are a dime a dozen these days, even cheaper with VOIPs.
Thank God and gunrun.

So there isn't one. And if he wants to fuck with them it means he can't use the thread for advice anymore or they'll see, so, potential downside.

yeah, don't call him out so quick and scare him off. Ask inquiring questions why he's away, why no online banking, why no phone calls. Make him put some energy into explaining himself. Then post here so we can laugh about it sitting in our cushioned chairs in lush velvety robes and monocle, as we tink glasses of chardonnay by a roasting fire.

Anytime one gets an email praising one for being trustworthy despite never having met them, it's almost certainly a scam.

I doubt they are trying to steal the car though, it's a long drive back to Nigeria. My guess is that after an email or two, it would turn out this guy needs a cash advance to get money from his grandmother's estate/bank/some bullshit. After which point you would never hear from them again.
