As I sit in cold powerless ct I am left with alot of time to think. Naturally ive been thinking about starcraft since I can't play it at the moment. So by trying to watch laggy streams on my phone or purusing the tl news and gsl live report ive noticed that I'm hooked on this game. I love the idea of people making a living playing a video game. This isn't a can I be a pro blog but I got to thinking damn most of these pros are the same age as me why did I never get into competitive gaming before all the other stuff got going in my life (work/school) and I think the reason begins with sc1.

When I hear a day 9 or incontrol talk about broodwar in how they fell in love with the game I think to myself I played that game why didn't I feel the same love that I do know. Looking back I wouldnt say I actually played but just the campaign and some ums games. I remember the 1 1v1 I did play was me as terran vs a zerg in which there must been a 4 pool and I remember thinking to myself well this is dumb game must be broken. Why didn't I think oh how do I stop that or how does he do that. Instead I went back to ums games and sc1 just became one of the countless games I played casually for month and never thought about again.

I would write more but my phone just warned me I'm less than 15 percent power but I'm sure there are others out there who got into sc 2 but wish they played bw more or at all. Share your noob 1v1 stories from bw when you didn't know better like me.

Damn it's cold

Sorry for grammer or format since it's from my phone

There are so many wonderful editorials of how brood war changed and shaped peoples lives. Even though I was not aware of the competitive scene until last year I feel lucky to have been there for one part of its history. It is truly a magnificant game.

You're never too young or old to be a pro and the dream is never too big. Check back on your dying phone and read the words- you can always be something. Even a tree.

Also be grateful you can make a blog on TL from your phone.

Stay warm yo

I remember that I played BW campaign many years ago and I liked the game but back then using Internet here was fucking expensive so I never gave a chance to play online. Years passed and I forgot about SC until early 2009 when I hear SC:BW was a huge deal in Korea. Then I decided to pick up BW again and searched for "free" online servers and found iCCup.

I knew absolutely nothing about BO, hotkeys, etc and I jumped directly to iCCup. Guess what happened? haha I got like 10-150 first season. Back then I thought "Why should I build more than 1 gate when I can produce zealots from the one I already have?"...... I also remember that I wanted to build one of those golden giant slugs but didnt know what buildings built that (the reaver) but I kept playing and playing without trying to search on the internet.

Eventually I started to search for strategy guides and found Liquipedia and, please forgive me for this sin, I found Combat-Ex youtube videos 'hellothisiscombatexwithanotherfpvod'... I watched only about 8 of his PvX fpvods though, and I didnt really got too misinformed by him. I would say that for a ultra mega noob his fpvods actually can help.

From liquipedia I found Teamliquid and from Teamliquid I found Bisu and Jaedong and all the pro scene. I must say that by then I couldn't win pvz for my life. Then I watched Bisu's games and Bisu had just won yet another fan for life. Unfortunately the pro leagues always started live at 1AM for me, so I could follow very few live casts because the next day I had to wake up early (and they made you wait 1 whole hour listening to KPop), so I started searching for VODs on youtube. Then I found the Small Vod Thread and my life was complete.

Eventually SC2 beta was coming closer and I had high expectations about it. I got into the beta and found it fun and I decided to land 115 bucks for it as soon as digital download became available, just for 1 year later find SC2 a HUGE let down, it didnt have the spirit of BW. A win didn't feel as rewarding as a BW win. And so many other little things that made my SC2 experience really bad.

Then I came back to BW, joined sGs a year ago I think, but I never stopped following the BW pro scene whenever I could.

Today I'm worried about the BW pros switch, about the MSL dying, about everything good about Starcraft going down...

That's my story.

I'm pretty much the same, I got SC in about 2000, played the campaign multiple times until about 08, made over 500 custom maps and just played around in it having fun. I didn't have the internet until around 03 and it was dial up (terrible one that kicked us offline every hour or so) until 08 so I never went online. I didn't know about the Korean scene or that it was even played competitively until the end of 09 at which point I was not particularly interested in BW any more (still loved the game, just was into other things). Then came sc2 (which I really love and watch for many hours per day), and after coming to TL and hearing about the wonders of BW I just felt so sad that I'd missed so much. I've seen a few BW games via GTR's stream but missing Boxer, Elky, oov, July and so many of the old greats just makes me really sad ((((

Though as my internet was so shit there was little I could have done about it anyway I guess.

Same story for me as Phenny, I got BW around 2000 except I didn't have a good network connection until 2004ish? By then I was playing WC3 so I never really got into playing online. It wasn't until a little while ago that I got back into it. I was never amazing but I could execute a two hatch muta build perfectly, several of my friends who played casually made the mistake of picking terran against me.

About 2 years ago I remember a few of us got together and played some FFAs. Went two hatch muta and destroyed my terran friend; I kept expanding all over the map and my other friend playing protoss got so mad at me so he decided to mass cannon. Two hours and a lot of dark swarms later they decided not to mess with me anymore

What I still love with BW is that so many people play it and just about any PC can run it.
I like the way the walls go out. Gives you an open feeling. Firefly's a good design. People don't appreciate the substance of things. Objects in space. People miss out on what's solid.

I remember starting playing way back, but I didn't get into watching progaming or actually playing serious until... 2008 or so. GomTV Star Invitation on a link from my friends, and I was interested in seeing how SC was 'supposed to be played'. The idea of making more than one production facility was shocking. Soon after I found TL/iCCup.

First season on iccup I only played 20ish games, losing most, but next season I came back with the resolution that red icons were not acceptable, and battered my way to a 50-70ish C-. It remains a more exhilarating achievement than anything since, including SC2 GM. I never really kept with laddering - I did, however, play a ton of PvTs against Infinity21, who would 2base contain me on destination every single game omfg ;_;

SC2 really increased how serious I took the game and how much effort I put into it, but I can't help but miss aspects of BW sometimes. I was never much more than a spectator of it, though - but I still damn well tuned into the last OSL finals, and it was glorious.

Off topic but how did Iccup work if you could play the same guy over and over again? Im guessing there were a lot less people overall on iccup compared to the sc2 ladder. I never touched it so i really have no clue. sry for my ignorance.

There were limits to how many rated games you could play against a single person based on your rank (higher rank = more consecutive games since it was comparatively harder to find people). I forget the exact figures for it.

Usually when I played someone I knew, we just played unrated games and could thus play as many as we wanted.

I remember when I used to play fastest maps and build a nexus in an allies base at the start of the game and would just turtle with them...... lol took me like 4-5 years to actually start playing the game seriously >.< so much wasted time. Wasted in a different sense than wasting it playing 1v1 xD
