This is a very good lesson that everyone should know about: secondary accidents are often more dangerous than primary accidents. People are way too distracted on the road these days with all the handheld smart phones. A few girls from my school were killed because someone swerved to avoid hitting a dog on the freeway which caused traffic to back up and someone then slammed into the backed up traffic and killed them. Things like this happen all the time, the only reason this one stands out to me is because I was stuck in the traffic jam caused by this accident and saw the mangled car that the girls died in, then I looked it up on google to see what happen and there were stories in the school newspaper about it. Just look for youtube videos of cop dashcams and see how often people slam into cars that are pulled over on the shoulder.

First of all, I am happy that you are alive and well enough to write this blog. I hope everything works out well for you. I am sure your college will be understanding of your situation and allow you to get back on track.

But in response to your lesson, I give you Yueyue. This is the girl in China who was run over and then ignored by passersby for 15 minutes as se bled out on the road.

I don't really think you want that to be the lesson.

Sorry to hear that man thanks for letting the community know so we can all say tell you to heal up and get the fuck off the freeway! Really, I've pulled over to check on people on the freeway, but half the truck still on the freeway is definitely not the way to do it. It sounds like you did everything properly, and got smashed for it, kinda how the world works, you know? Well, stay positive, eat well, drink pure water, I'm sure your head will clear up soon!

Did the doctor say how long the brain damage would last? Or if it would even heal?

Yeah Manifesto, I definitely wouldn't mean to ignore an accident at all. I just think if I was in the same situation again I would stay in my car and call the police and wait for them to arrive before I got out of my car. But I'm definitely just happy to be approving at this rate and thanks for all the encouraging words!

Yeah, the brain injury will heal but they don't have a time frame on it yet. We don't actually know the true extent of it yet, we're getting an mri on Saturday to know exactly how bad it is. They know that it's not like life shattering though because they did see it in the ct scans.

I'm glad you are okay and recovering well. Sucks when you are trying to do a kind thing and something bad comes out of it.

I don't mean to sound like a guy whose always out to get someone or something but were you compensated ?

I do have a lawyer and we're going to get some compensation but it's going to be a long process. Not sure exactly how this stuff works out, like for a time scale or how much I should really expect either. I'm a total noob to this

You can get out of your car, if there are no cars parked on the highway. You gotta be pulled all the way off the highway, and get out away from the side the highway is on. Even then it scares me to be outside my vehicle on the highway (but its happened). Don't trust other people to be paying attention : (. I'm really sorry man, hopefully you get back to school soon.

I'm glad to see you're all right. That experience sounds pretty terrifying. Especially some of the after-effects. I would completely flip out if I wasn't able to remember certain things. Still, it was good of you to stop and help out, even if all this happened.

Thanks for sharing your story. You did the right thing by trying to help those people. I remember my last serious accident (although on residential streets), and an offduty nurse stopped to help in much the same way you did. I was very grateful to her.

Do you know what happened to the driver that hit the truck? ie any charges? ie people who cant fucking slow down when approaching stopped vehicles, let alone can't even fucking drive around them, get off the road?

It always sucks when you have to pay the price for someone else losing control, as we have both learned from experience. Luckily, I didn't suffer nearly as badly. This summer I was doing a bicycle ride across the state of Iowa (500 miles in 7 days) and after doing 100 miles in a day one woman swerved in front of me. I went over my handlebars, breaking my arm in quite possibly the most mild way possible. Point is, I feel for you man. Good luck, hope the recovery goes well!

Wow. It sounds terrible, but you are lucky you got away with what you did! Thanks for sharing. I was recently involved in my first accident (t-boned at ~45mph, red light) and it's terrifying... Good luck on your recovery.

The driver got some pretty bad injuries himself, the car ended up stuck underneath the truck and he had to be cut out of the car. I'm not sure of any actual charges though

Oh man, scary stuff. I guess it's true, no good deed goes unpunished.

I remember a friend of mine in high school got hit by a car. He was crossing the street at a cross walk and some woman ran a stop sign and slammed into him. He apparently went flying a ways across the intersection before landing on the concrete. He somehow only ended up with a few scratches and bruises amazingly. None of us could believe it.

People need to be more careful

I-10, 101 or 60? I lost an ex GF on mine on the 101 to a drunk driver who slammed into them while they were stopped in the median, died instantly. Glad to hear you're ok, the medians on the major freeways here are insane.

Aren't some people so ridiculously stupid? I was hit by a car while I was riding my bike a few years back. Claims I "came out of nowhere" and didn't have the decency to look 30 feet ahead of him for bikes in one of the heaviest bike commuting cities. Damn near head on. Dealing with lawyers is such a pain.

Hope things turn out for the best.

that's why AZ passed the law there you have to either change lanes or SLOW THE EFF down. dipshit drivers on their phones not only clog up traffic, but eff people over.

i'm sorry to hear you got injured. hopefully you don't get stuck with bills. gl with the recovery man.

Man, you're lucky. And you were smart enough to go on the passenger side as well too and still got hit! I hope your insurance or you are suing the fuck out of that idiot to cover your bills, because you've got to be negligent as fuck to hit a car on the shoulder like that. ICU ain't cheap at all.

That's pretty crazy, hope you get better!

Kinda unexpected for that to happen when you're helping someone out but I guess it's good that you have only minimal injuries because it could be a lot worse when you think of what could have happened when you get hit by a truck

Terrible. I was also hit by a car once but I was fortunate enough to only suffer bone fracture on my leg. Can't even imagine what your symptoms feel like. I sincerely hope you get better, bloody stupid drivers...
