While I'm at school I always think about how important it is to do my homework and read what's on the study list. Yet when I come home I immediately relax and just play starcraft or watch streams.

How does an average teamliquid reader counter this OP phenomenon?

I never really did. Always last minute'd everything in school. The pressure is always what helps get the work done eventually.

I tell myself I'm being a piece of shit and just go take care of what I need to. No tricks, just action.

Don't go home, stay at the library to work. When you get home, then you can relax and do whatever (assuming you finished everything at the library).

I found this article helped me out quite a bit:

This. Ez. And no laptops. A laptop really isn't necessary for studying.

Getting yourself to work is like jumping off a cliff. You need to clear your mind from all thinking, and get to work without your instinct noticing it.

You know what they say, hard work may pay off later, but procrastination pays off now!

In all seriousness, though, it's just willpower. I had the same problem in highschool but when I went to college I told myself to get my shit together and I noticed a huge improvement in my overall work habits. Once you get in the habit of not resting until your work is done it gets quite easy actually. Plus it feels amazing when you can finally unwind after busting your ass doing homework and what not.

I procrastinate and I'm working on a master's degree.

Procrastinating is how I keep my life from being boring. I handle stuff well in a state of emergency at 4 AM anyway.

OP, I'm feeling your pain.

I'm in my last year of law school. I've been in school for 20 years straight. That's 80% of my ENTIRE F*CKING LIFE. I'm just...burnt out. I have 2 papers I need to work on, as well as working an externship, going to class, networking, and applying for jobs. And I'm doing about none of that. I just never have the willpower at the end of the day. And it's now starting to negatively affect my mood. When I'm working or in class, I think about the work I've been procrastinating and it depresses me. Then I get home, and instead of actually SOLVING the problem by doing the damn work, I just screw around on the internet or watch TV or work out or do anything other than my work.

We can be procrastination-beating buddies. When you get home tonight, just sit down and DO WHAT YOU NEED TO DO. I'm going to do it, too. Hopefully 3-hours-from-now-Me has the same amount of resolve as current-Me.

I do the same thing, except without the procrastination. How? Well, there isn't always going to be an entertaining stream on, there isn't always a time when I feel like playing starcraft or any other game, so what do I do in my downtime? I work on an assignment.

On the occasion where there are a lot of streams on or I am in the mood to play games, that is where willpower comes in, I just think to myself that if I work on my school stuff now, then I have all the stress-free time in the world afterwards to do whatever I want to. If i do it the other way around, and save the assignment for the last minute, I know that I will have stress, and no one wants a lot of stress.

Try and force yourself to do something unrelated, like complete 30 pushups and 10 pullups first thing in the morning. It's easy to complete because it doesn't take much time, but it's still hard to force yourself to do it. After you finish, you'll find that you do have willpower after all. That works for me sometimes anyway.

Limit use of the library computer to email and course work. Always work in the quiet study area, other than for group work.

There was a nice point in my life when I realized that I could do what I want. What I mean is, I could choose whatever choice I wanted, whenever I wanted. It's called self-control. Before this point in my life, I'd often times think about what I'd want to do or wish I were doing, but then do other things anyways.

For me it really was just a matter of self-control. A swim or drown situation.

That epiphany came to me one day when I was doing research for a huge IB essay on Nikola Tesla, and I was reading his biography. He did the same sort of thing and I copied him.
