patience?
got my MCAT scores back, the sciences went well, but i got my ass handed to me on the sciences (edit: verbal). i guess i can't read for shit? going to finish my application, even though its super late because i have a slight possibility of getting into my state school because its not super duper competitive and i have some connections there.
honestly, though, i'm growing a little impatient. this is now my second year out of undergrad and i have yet to find a stable job, recently i've been making a boatload of money tutoring, but that's about it. i'm seriously thinking of just applying to some PhD programs, MAYBE some DO, and def some other stuff like TFA or NIH post-bac stuff.
research is seriously one of my biggest passions, which is why i was hoping my MCAT score would be competitive enough for MD/PhD, but I guess not. even then, the lab i'm volunteering at is kind of ridiculous. my project is based off some undergrad's work which was pretty much a pile of BS. thankfully, my PI asked me if i want to work on another project. so i'm going to probably work on a project with my post-doc mentor who is simply one of the best friends that i have right now. ironically, he's advising me to GTFO, as far away from this lab as possible. but, i can't do that because if i leave before one year, it looks sort of bad. so i'm stuck. my dream is to do an MD/PhD, but the way things are going right now i'd settle for either.
i've been practically unemployed for the past year and a half, had ACL reconstruction a year ago and still haven't recovered because i've been too busy studying/working/researching to do rehab.
should i just give up on dreams and move forward, or wait it out another year and give it another shot? i've been extremely depressed lately...can't eat, can't sleep, can't enjoy SC2, can't enjoy anything.

so...some of the clients that i tutor are cute. either i'm just an amazing tutor or they have something for me because they give me ridiculous amounts of money for like reading their powerpoint to them or just doing homework with them for FOUR hours (which at my rate is like $80). not only that, but like a 2 hour session turns into like 20 minutes of chit chat, and they pay me for this? then one girl starts asking personal questions during chit chat and just starts spilling her heart out (literally starts telling me some really personal stuff about herself/family). aside from that, she just seems way too comfortable, she was literally putting her hands down her pants in front of me and then playing with her boobs, i just pretended like i didn't notice, it was awkward.
too tempting not to reciprocate advances... its a problem because i have a GF who i've been with for 3 years. problem is, she's in taiwan for almost 6-7 more months, so it makes shit more tempting. but i'm not the kind of guy who wants to mess around with girls with the risk of STDs/herpes/etc, but when has that stopped any guy? too tempted even though i want to remain faithful. i actually like this girl as a platonic friend, she has a cool personality, but i just don't want her advances to tempt me... how do you maintain a 'professional/friendly' relationship without letting shit happen?

I think he meant English or something that requires "reading". On a side note, just tell the girl straight forward that you think she would be great as a friend, and that you are in a committed relationship.

Regarding the second question, you man up and act honourably?
It's not like you can't control your actions, you have to make a decision about whether you are going to cheat on your girlfriend or not. If you decide to cheat then clearly your relationship isn't as important to you as you thought it was, so break-up first and then do what you want to. If you decide your relationship is important to you, then simply don't do anything to compromise it. Acting honourably in relationships is pretty straightforward, as long as you know you know that you can't keep your relationship and be with another girl. Then it's just a decision about what you want the most, and sticking to your decision.

Slightly off-topic, you said your dream was to do an MD/PhD. What about DO? I've heard now that DO and MD programs are mostly indistinguishable from one another.

You can't. If you're tempted, you'll always be tempted. Either go for it or don't.
I have a wife and a small kid and still get tempted by a lot of women when at work.
I prefer to not be "friends" with the ones that are most obviously interested in getting something on, so I don't get tempted that much.

that is honestly one of the reasons i gave up my goal for med school, i simply don't have to patience to take those kind of waiting game risks. I winged my MCAT's this summer too (told myself to study, played League instead ._.) and managed to get a 29R which isn't great but higher than expected. granted, it's not competitive enough for me to apply for med school never mind a MD/PHD program. I do find it great that you actually enjoy research though, that'll make the ronin years go by a little faster. I worked in an MR imaging lab over the summer and i didn't enjoy it very much. I simply hate working in microbiology labs or organismal research. So i guess you should just try to get into the MD program if you can because at the end of the road, a PHD won't offer much in a clinical setting.
sounds like, she's really loose if she has the lack of dignity to so openly flaunt herself at you. I think you should stick to your principles and just resist it. go home and load up some porn if you need to but i would imagine you'll end up regretting it if you hook up with her.

Well lets put it like this, this girl is probably your main income should you have sex or date her no longer will she need to pay you because she did you a "favor". Now you are out a large source of income which i know is important because i currently have none....So yea just remember the money and your girlfriend best of luck!

i'm at the tail end of my cancer biology phd program, and unless you can really get into a md/phd program, i wouldn't recommend getting into a straight research phd program during these times. Awful job prospects along with shitty hours and pay is what you'll face, coupled with funding cuts and extreme competition. At least as an md/phd, you have many outs and can leave research if you want without having felt like you wasted 5+ years of your life.
Personally, I regret not applying to pharm school instead.

so last time some girl was making advances i didn't say anything, because it was beneficial for me to stay friends with her (used her to help me with research stuff). eventually, this girl was just texting me borderline risque stuff (no dirty pics, just dumb shit, but nothing like 'i want to eff you'). my gf of course, caught glimpse of my phone, and didn't take so kindly to it. so i had to tell this girl that she can't say shit like that cuz i'm in a relationship. eventually, this girl stopped talking to me forever and started acting like a real bitch. i'm not sure how i can get the point across while being subtle and not destroying a source of income.
as for the MCAT, i think i really have to retake it unless i magically get into my state school. but i guess its not entirely uncommon for people to retake or even apply to med school 2 years after graduation.

If you factor in the risk of STD:s as a negative in the choice whether or not to cheat on your girlfriend you clearly aren't very responsible.

My MCAT was hella unbalanced too  . I got a respectable composite score, but there was a difference of 5 between my verbal and my lowest science.
MD/PhDs are extremely competitive. Unless you're a superstar in all areas of your application (including multiple publications), chances are pretty slim. There's nothing wrong with being out of school, as long as you've been applying yourself/pursuing healthcare opportunities/not being a lazy bum you should be fine. If anything you have an advantage if you've worked a year or two in healthcare than someone out of college (assuming identical stats of course).
DO is a good alternative too. Don't believe the stigma, there is only one difference between DOs and MDs once you graduate: one has an M and the other has an O. Once you're in the workforce no one gives a shit what letters are after your name. There's only one DO school that has a sketchy reputation, and it's in CO.

i actually have a couple pubs, some awards for research, and some other stuff. i'm competitive everywhere on my app except MCAT...retarded, i don't mind retaking, but i'm gonna hit the submit button in a few hours. might as well give it a shot.

SDN can get extremely depressing. There's some good advice there, but the amount of bragging, e-peening, flaming, and trolling is just ridiculous.
Good luck with your app. It's already late in the season though. If you don't get in, retake your mcats or go for DO like the above poster said. I'm currently a MS4 (MD candidate) applying for residencies in a fairly noncompetitive field and my experience is that unless you are gunning for an ultra competitive residency, there's absolutely no difference between MD and DO on the interview trail and beyond.
