Hello dear fellow liquidians,

My name is Matthias "Oriatis" Reither and I'm a 24 year old Starcraft fan from Austria playing protoss.
Just recently - in fact it was today - I finally finished my bachelor examination and i am now officially bachelor of science! Now i have finally time for a project which i had in my head for a loooong time.

First something about myself and my history with gaming:

+ Show Spoiler +

My first real game for a PC was Starcraft (I haven't had a computer at the time of buying ^_^) and i really loved it. Unortunately, i had no idea that the internet existed at that time so i just played it against the computer and the missions over and over again.

As time went by new interesting games were published and I slowly lost interest (after about 2 years playing vs the computer).I kept playing RTS games for fun (like C&C Red Alert 2) and switched over to FPS as i had my first computer which could access the internet. After some years I found my passion for MMOS and kept playing World of Warcraft for over 6 years, and I really loved the interacion and the small community I was a part of.

As soon as I heard that there will be a SC2 beta my old love for Starcraft lightened up again. I took my old SC-CD out of the shelf and played through the campaign again. I searched for more content and finally found teamliquid and was just amazed: There was a big community which loved the game that I held dear in my memories and was still playing it, it was just awesome! I kept lurking and eventually created an account. It was so awesome to feel like a part of that great community and i tried to soak up all the knowledge as good as i could!

I got a CD-Key and just played the beta as often as i could. I was amazed how much fun this game is, i loved it from the start. Due to real life issues like my bachelor thesis and the work that came with it i had no time for playing but still kept lurking and whatched these awesome guys like Day[9], Tlo, Tyler, White-Ra and many others when there was time.
Now that these stressful days are finally over i can finally start my venture. Everyone who read 'till here: Thank you guys, I really apprechiate it!

My project:

I want to start an 1 hour long stream every evening during weekdays (from monday to wednesday, maybe friday too) where I play to improve(I'm currently in platinum after my placement match) and try to show some entertaining games either on ladder or with friends of mine. There wil also be a second screen where I can interact with the community, maybe even during games if I have the brain capacities to do that I want to get better at the game I love and hope to share with you my progress, my happiness of getting better and just having a good time while playing Starcraft II. It will be a big motivator for me and hopefully enjoying for you. The language will be either English or Austrian (well, kind of German but with Austrian flair :D)

I will be open for every constructive advice, maybe build order suggestions (if i can implement them in my current skillset) or play with some of you guys (I don't care what league you are, either if you wanna "smash a noob" or just want to play with someone at your level or above, standard will be EU, but i have an US account as well). The time frame which i'll have will be dependant on my class schedule for my master degree program. I expect it to be somewhere between 8 p.m.(6 p.m. GMT) and 10 p.m.(8 p.m. GMT).

You'll find the stream on http://www.justin.tv/oriatis and hopefully on the team liquid stream list.

The official start will be Tuesday 27th of September 8:00 pm (6 pm GMT) and I'm looking forward to see some of you fine people there!

If you have suggestions what else I could do please let me know, I will try to be as responsive as possible

Greetings and have a nice evening/day,
Oriatis

ps:
I didn't know if this should belong in the blog- or the general section, but since it's a stream announcement i thought it would fit here best

I think you need to push your idea a bit more, give people something a lot more new and fresh. Given your league, you are going to have a hard time attracting viewers so you need to use something else to attract viewers. Im sure you are a cool guy and will be entertaining, but you have to have more then that to get someone to click your stream link these days.

Hrmm, perhaps a newer take on it would be, play a game or two, and then get someone (Friend, free higher-level coach) to help go over any issues or bumps?

or kind of do like how day9 did the newbie tuesday the other week, (Focus only on injects) and just kind of build up from there. Play a game or two devoted to the one task you want to work on, and then look at how other aspects of your game fall apart, and how you can possibly rebuild it all from there?

Just a few thoughts

OP's spirit is commendable, but at this point streaming one's games is not exactly a contribution to the community, except you are a pro-gamer who people will appreciate because he is certifiably good at what he's doing so people feel they can gain something from watching.

You see the streaming 'market' is very saturated at the moment (112 streamers online atm, and only a handful of them get more than a handful of viewers), there is not exactly a demand for a platinum level player to show his games to be blunt.

So as long as you don't bring something else to the table, it would be more accurate to say you're asking something from the community (watching and commenting on your play) rather than contributing something worthwhile.

I know this sounds dick-ish, but that's just the way it is atm.

Exactly that was my plan reneg. I want to improve and use the methods that day9 suggested and incorporate them into my play: from the probes and pylons over the hotkeys to the priority list: I want to get better using these methods and through mass-gaming (which in the end is the best way to get better). My plan for the "pilot" on tuesday would be selecting builds for each matchup, explaining why I use them and when I have memorized those well enough branching out to be more versatile.

Maybe some people feel the same like me and just want to get better, but don't know how because most of the advices are abstract or hard to implement in one's play. I want to show my viewpoint, struggles and my way of solving them. I hope that i can help some people with their problems as well through solving mine.
My goal is not achieving a big viewerbase, but to help people enjoy starcraft II the same way as i do.

My strong point won't be sacrificial lambs or some things like playing drunk with some boxers on my head(which would bring some viewers, I'm pretty sure about that), but the will to improve, the joy of playing and consistency in streaming schedule.

@Harrad: That's absolutely not what i had in mind. I wasn't asking about feedback of my game (it would be nice, but if there's none I wouldn't mind). It's about helping people like me who maybe struggle in one aspect of the game and phrases like "you need to work on your macro" don't strike a tone at all... how do you work on your macro? what are the possibilities which come from better macro and how do you achieve it at all?
I hope that i can show these during my progress.

Well according to your opening post it IS what you had in mind. Interacting with the community means you want to encourage feedback as a key component of the experience, you even mentioned you had a second screen dedicated to that. With the concept you have in mind you can't afford to not mind not getting any feedback from the community you're supposedly catering to.

So for your stream to be relevant to the average potential viewer, you will want it to be as interactive as possible as the main attraction. Keep in mind that there is tons of vods, guides etc of higher level players explaining builds, macro mechanics etc. Why would a beginner who has only a very limited amount of time each day to spend on gaming-related stuff watch you rather than Day9 and company?

No reason to post here just to be a dick, at least he seems to have the motivation to do so. Why not try to give constructive advice instead?

He claims to be giving back to the community, I simply let him know I fail to see how. And the question mark is an indication that he could tell me how. So, I'm not rly being a dick.

i meant i don't need feedback regarding my play(in the sense of "i appreciate feedback but if there is none i'm just as happy as communicating with others) but rather in form of questions of "why did you plant your gateways down now" or "why didn't you get them earlier". it should be about how you solve problem X od Y, as i brought up the example with macro.

i just want to help the community by playing and showing how to solve different problems may help people who have similar ones. We often see those games just "through the eyes of a pro". many things are easy for them which are not for casual gamers like me.

i think it could be exciting to look at a game from a different point of view

I can dig it, i like what you've got going on here.

The most important thing i can stress though, is be consistent. If you decide you wanna do a 3x a week show, if you want to actually get viewers and support, make sure you do it 3x a week.

Things like that have extremely helped day9, and it's also the reason that many tv shows have been canceled (imagine firefly, when fox moved it around to a different time slot every other week), and how it was incredibly hard to get followers because of that.

So i'd say go conservative at first, something you know you can hit easily, and after a month of it (if 3x a week is what you're going for, then do that), and if you can after a month of being consistent throw in a bonus episode on fri, do it. but don't over commit and over promise

So your idea of "giving back to the community" is to advertise your platinum stream where youll be doing what pretty much every other person streaming is trying to do (improve, entertain yadayada)? Ok.. your stream sounds like every other non pro stream out there, they all have the same goals, I hardly see how yours is worthy of a thread and claim that its giving back to the community. Might want to reword your thread title tbh.

omg ur a dick blah blah etc

But no, really, I agree with you, as does everyone else. We just see that the OP thinks he's doing something nice (so we try to be nice with responses), but in reality no one is going to care or watch. From an objective standpoint, our feedback is not dickish, it's just realistic. No one is going to gain much from watching a low level player trying to improve.

That said, I might watch just to give advice because that kind of thing entertains me.

I just think it's fair to note that basically no one is going to care or gain anything from this stream, for the reasons everyone has given.

as i already said: my focus doesn't lie in advertising or something else and there are surely ton's of better players out there (just take a look at the gm league and i guess every masters player and so on).

my goal is to share my joy of playing the game and maybe i can help people who struggle with the same problems as myself or with problems i might have already solved. joy and improvement are the main factors, not advertising myself or getting profit or even rekognition, i am a platinum player who wants to get better like many other people and i want to help others while i'm improving, that's what i want

when it's not your kind of stream then it's okay with me and i hope that you will find plenty of interesting streams for your entertainment!

That's fine, but what people take issue with is the idea that you're "giving back to the community". My argument is that watching your stream will not be a better way to learn how to deal with the problems of a platinum player than watching, say, White_Ra's stream.

I would've loved to start a tournament with invites of pro players or something epic like that, but unfortunately i'm just a student and that's all which lies in my power. maybe if i can save up some money during the year i am able to launch something like a little sc2 cup or a one time tournament with a bigger price pool, but for now that's all that i can contribute.

instead of just lurking and only taking something, i want to give something back to the community i really appreciate and that's all.
maybe if time passes i'm able to contribute something more beneficial for more people, but at the moment that's all i can do and i will put my heart into it.
