Quick blog because I'm encountering an issue.

I'm not the messiest guy in the world, but I do live a bit dirty (no sheets on my pillows, haven't cleaned the bed sheets in a month, etc.). But as of late, I've been getting sudden colds and sickness everytime I'm in my room.

It's start with the coughing, just massive coughing, very loud and it feels like something tickling my throat.

Then comes to stuffy nose, just really stuffed and it won't go away.

Then I gag and feel sick in my stomach.

This only happens in my room and only happens at the late evening of the night. I'm on my computer during the day in my room and nothing happens. The moment I hit the bed, give or take an hour, I get really sick, but somehow manage to sleep until it vanishes.

I have no allergies and I have premedical conditions. My room is a bit dusty on the window blinds and I think my industrial fan circulates or collects that dust (I just blew out whatever it had with this compressed air can). I don't know what's causing me to be sick, but I once left the room to sleep under the couch and I was fine, slept better.

Is there any way to remedy this or a way to find the cause? I don't think I can sleep like this again. It was brutal. Also, why does it only occur on my bed when I'm lying down and no where else or at any other time (in the day, I'm in bed too and so far nothing).

I'm cleaning the pillows and changing sheets now. Thinking of doing a massive clean-up of the place, but I'd really like a solved mystery before I call Scooby-Doo.

Oh, another thing to note is that my room has no circulation, hence the fan. Everytime you walk in my room, it's a punch of heat. In the living room, it's about 24 Celsius, in my room, it's 29 Celsius even with the two doors open.

Any suggestions?

29° Celsius is sick warm.

How the hell do you manage to even sleep there?
That could also cause the stuffed nose and the trouble breathing.

It's 23 now. A month ago it'd stick around 29.
I have an industrial fan, it keeps me cooler

How's the humidity during the night? It sounds like you might benefit from a humidifier moistening the air when you sleep.

Probably mold. Not sure about the climate of the place you live in, but if it is a humid place (by the ocean, for example) coupled with your high room temperature it's likely mold in the walls.

How old is your place?

It might feel dry in your room, but dampness behind walls can be a problem.

It sounds like it may be a mold problem to me, especially with that temperature in the room. Make sure to check your window sills and down in each corner of the room (behind the bed, move furniture, etc) for mold.

You could be right about the mold. I recently had a flood about a few months ago and I've yet to fully install the carpet (it's been cleaned and put back on the floor, just not stapled or whatever in)

What am I to see or look for when I look around?

I'm in a condominium and the floor is concrete.

Try the humidifier as Seion said.
Also, give your bedsheets a good wash... and vacuum your room more often!

When I used to live with a roommate, his room was mold, too. Poor guy was sick all the time and couldnt attend university. Found out about it when we moved out, it was behind his couch, the whole wall had to be opened and dried.

This can be really nasty.

Look for any signs of paint peeling on the walls (or bulging, discoloration), etc. Mold can grow behind wallpaper or behind drywall.

Since you mentioned a flood, it's very likely to be mold. Cleaning and removing mold can be difficult, especially if it's growing behind drywall which will have to be removed. I'd suggest either talking to a professional in your area or a family member with experience before taking any major steps.

Clean everything. That means not only sheets, but pillow, blanket, everything. Lift up you bed and give it a good scrubbing under. I'd even go as far as to wash the walls. I have had some of the same symptoms as you have, (being depressed and alone - didn't give two shits about cleaning). And it works.

(And even if it dont - you shouldnt live in filth, you dirty bastard )

You can oftentimes smell a musty odor or something along those lines, but mold behind drywall or under floorboards can be hard to detect through simply smelling it.

I currently live in San Diego and mold is a common occurrence, although many people simply don't know they have it, or it is not grown sufficiently to hazardous levels. In the case of a flooded condominium coupled with respiratory issues starting afterward (and an unusually warm room temperature to boot), it's likely to be mold.

And like others have said, simply giving your room a real solid cleaning might remove whatever allergens or what-have-you that are causing issues (it's also cheaper than hiring a professional to do mold removal)

Okay, there's no mold. The reason for this is that after the flood, we had professionals vacuum all the moist of the floors and dry the entire place with massive fans and these floor like suctions. There is no sign of paint peeling or does it ever smell (otherwise people would have told me for sure).

The place is thoroughly clean in terms of mold. This drying phase went on for 2 months including drying the wood flooring in the living room to prevent it from warping anymore.

I'm doing this now ): I just wish I didn't have to. Cleaning pillows, then sheets then getting a brush and just scrubbing the walls and blinds.~

Do you drink enough? Because hot + dry room and not staying hydrated could be bad.

A lot of juice, excessively a lot.
I drank two cartons of milk in about a week and a half.

How old is your house? 29 celcius and even 24 is pretty ridiculous, you really should get some proper circulation if you are planning on living there for many years.

Also juice =/= water, you shouldn't not drink water.

Are you 100% positive you don't have a dust mite or feather allergy then? I have it and it's pretty common I think. If you're uncertain you could try using an allergy pillow cover.

It's a condo.

It's under 7 years old.

It's 24 now, living room has a lot of circulation and is 23.

Mold would have been my first pick, but if you are certain it is not the problem, I'd go with acarids.
Even if you are not allergic, you become more and more sensitive everytime you are exposed to them. Hot room + no air circulation + no sheets point to that too.
And your symptoms (coughing, tickling in the throat, getting worse with time) really look like an allergy problem actually.

Remedy : wash your sheets, throw away your pillows and buy new ones, which MUST have sheets on (since acarids feed on your dead hairs and what not), vacuum clean your mattress, use a special anti-acarid spray on it (your chemist should have some), vacuum clean it again.
Get fresh air to circulate in your room as often as possible, otherwise your own perspiration (which must be pretty abundant with 29°C) get your mattress damp enough for the little bastards to live a happy life (don't forget you are feeding them too).
Also, make sure air can circulate BELOW your mattress too. IE no mattress directly onto the floor, or on a plank : you need a proper bed base.

I don't recommend self medication, but if you have access to light anti-allergic medicine (I use Zyrtec, dunno if it goes by the same name in Canada), take one before going to bed. If you are fine, or a lot less bad than usual, you know what to do!

Hope it helps!

Check for mold in the rug, in the walls.... had the same thing in the winter and it was due to black mold that grew in the walls after a bad storm at the end of the summer. You don't smell or notice it until it's already in there real well. Even if you could sense it before hand, you won't becaues you live there. It's like a smoker not noticing they smell like ass all day

e; also, like most allergens, people will all react differently to this kind of stuff

What Uraeus said. That was the first thing that came to mind after reading you didn't had a sheet on your pillow or changed your bedding for over a month. I'm almost 100% sure this is the cause of your problems. It's best to have 2 sets of sheets so you can always change them when needed.

Especially your pillow needs to be clean and with fresh sheets on it as it's where your head (and thus your throat / nose) are when sleeping. I have two sheets on my pillow. The outer one I change every week or immediately when I sweat it all wet. The one directly on the pillow I change about once a month or if I sweated really heavily when it's damp.

Change your bedding every two weeks or something or when you sweat it all wet.

Bonus: You'll sleep a lot better in clean sheets. Especially when you first take a shower and then change your sheets and go to bet. It's heavenly imo.

Very true before spending a lot of money, try some anti-histamines.. if they work you know it's allergy. Though if they don't work you still can't rule out allergy, but anyway.

Even if you didn't have allergies before you can always pick them up as you go through life. Right now is dustmite season, maybe you need to take your bed and other fiberous things outside and just beat the shit out of them.

PS- Have you recently changed anything in your room? Like a new blanket, pillow, a rug? I found out the hard way staying at my exgf's house that she had goose feather pillows and they literally fucked my lungs up so bad I couldn't breathe.

I've never been one for doing a lot of cleaning in the past, but in the last few months I have decided I'm not going to spend the rest of my life living in a f-ing shithole. To this end I always make sure I do 1 thing every day in the house to make it a better place to live. I recommend this to everyone, not only for you own health, but for your sanity and also your (potential) love life.

Living in a clean tidy environment feels so good.

BTW cheap anti allergens will make you sleepy. As lots have said before, this sounds a lot like acarids (which are nasty lil buggers), if it were mold it wouldnt only affect you in your room afaik.

it's the dust and dustmites/bedbugs.

bring our your blanket, all other cloth stuff and beat the dust off them. leave them under sunlight for a day. i don't know how else to get your room ventilated, but maybe leave the door open.

clean the dust off the floor, walls, corners, top of your fan, etc. especially the top of your fan. if dust stays there and you turn it on, all the dust falls on you -_-

also, stress and depression will make your immune system weak. just putting it out there in case you have any :o

edit:

aircan won't do shit, dust will still remain in your room. do all the dusting outdoors.

Check for black mold underneath the floor and in the air vents. That stuff is terrible; houses need to be evacuated for the stuff.

Wow, massive ressurection.

What's lancing it?

All's well so far in my room. The only problem is that I was using an air duster can to dust off my fan, but it was spinning and the small little plastic straw is caught inside.

So now, whenever I turn on my fan, I hear: Tic tic tic tic.

There's no clear way or showing of how to open this stupid fan thing.
