Have you ever complained about internet, mobile phone, or home phone pricing?

* Disclaimer: I'm not an expert I'm just an angry customer*

Just by asking my friends and coworkers I seem to complain a great deal about the "BIG 3" telecommunication companies in Canada. Rogers, Bell, and Telus! While there are other providers they are still somehow connected to these three companies. For example, Fido Solutions is owned and operated by Rogers Communications. These companies have around the same pricing model and are scared to make any changes as they try to keep things the same.

The problem stems from foreign ownership/investing. I might be wrong on the percentage or facts but I believe the way it is currently a foreign investor can only control 46% a telecom company in Canada. With this in place I see no future for Canada and internet/mobile service becoming like what other countries have such as South Korea.

I just spent 30 minutes talking to a CSR from Rogers. I only had a few questions about my grandfathered plan for my iPhone 4. I inquired about overage charges and different plan options. I never had caller ID and I asked why it wasn't a free service (I assumed it would be a free service with some of the plans they offer), she told me it would be $8 to activate it. I only use data/text so I didn't bother taking it. I then asked about terminating my contract. This was the deal maker. She was sad to hear that so she transfered me to the cancellation department. I already knew that I would have to pay upwards of $500 to terminate it but I figured I could try to milk it. The cancellation rep gave me $6 off of my plan and gave me 5GB's of extra data.

My question is why was that so easy to gain? Why not just give a better pricing model and actually make your customers happy? Maybe I need to look more into the CRTC and see for myself why Canada is in such a bad place when it comes to Telecom companies. For now I'll just do what everyone else does, blame Steven Harper (even though he promotes foreign investors, why do people complain about him again?).

First post, hope you enjoyed my rant.

Videotron isn't connected by any of those major providers, no?

It seems not. To be honest that's the first time I've ever heard of Videotron. They seem to only operate in Quebec. Do you use their service?

I have made 30 calls to my internet company. They still haven't even tried to fix the problem that I have reported to them. Instead they try to make me "upgrade". The "upgrade" is what caused the problem in the first place. So no, I am not satisfied.

They use the rogers network, if I'm not mistaken.

I used to work for Videotron, and Rogers owns them in some capacity.

As far as I know. Videotron has none of the problems that Rogers had.

I encounter a problem with the connection maybe once every year?

I was expecting this to be about companies like Cisco, Qualcomm, Broadcom, etc., not ISPs (though ISPs do count as telecom companies no doubt).

I used to hate Comcast, but I called them a few times and they noticed something wrong with my connection and sent out a guy who lived across the street and he fixed it for me, and now I don't dc as much.

It's not the lack of foreign ownership that makes our telecomm services a giant fuck you to the consumers, it's the lack of foreign competition. The big three basically control w.e. is supposed to be the watchdog for consumers, CRTC?. Need someone to cut their balls off from the outside, but the government protects telecommunications in Canada.

With Wind Mobile and Shaw on the verge of entering into the fray I thought that maybe, just maybe, we could start changing our ways. It's a shame Shaw's deal didn't go through. I would like to see a larger amount of people switch over to Wind mobile to stir some things up for the big three.

The CRTC needs to do something or just get the fuck out.

You got it all wrong, telecom companies are great. My favourites are SKT and KT. My Swedish one is pretty great since it is very cheap and always works.

Depends on the country I suppose. I know Sweden ranks for ahead of anything Canada can dish out. I pay $49.99 a month for 3mbs down and 1 mbs up. The world average is what? 9mbs and they probably play a fraction of what I pay.
