I feel that all the positive connotations for gamers have been drowned out by the media's indulgence to a vocal minority. The vocal minority is just the usual whiners who exist in any population. Often, it's the same people who would complain about life who would complain about the evils of high-tech entertainment. Seriously, their subtext is that somehow gamers are minions or zombies of an evil empire who are out to get them, the victims. I can totally see a day when there is a gaming law right next to our current liquor laws.

A New Hope

I believe there should be a counter-agenda to depict gamers as happy, social people. Furthermore, the cool zone should extend to those who play games without moderation. Shouldn't it be good to pursue happiness without delay? There's nothing wrong for us youth to enjoy games like Starcraft 2 even though we can be less responsible, right?

It's amazing how prudish society is when it comes to games. Some people treat gamers and their toys in the same class as alcoholics and liquor. I believe a good dose of optimism is in order. We are not slaves to games. Please help me out in this survey by listing how many days or months you've played Starcraft 2 till now (gamer cred), possibly other games you have played and time, and the particular benefits from gaming that you've experienced. Thanks so much!

Let me start then

Gamer Cred: 4 months (Platinum)
Benefits: Showed me a new world...cliche but true, gave me an adrenaline rush, kept me away from hard drugs, provided me a place to vent, brought me good friends, provided possible convention center drive-by plans while preparing a dating itinerary, and was a way to convince naive friends on how "skilled" I was

Although there are some positive repercussions to it, majority of the effects of playing a lot of games really are bad, no excuses.
Something SC2 taught me was that with dedication and daily practice I could improve on anything, which is what made me quit it in the first place and focus on other activities.

However, I would be lying if I said I don't regret all the hours I put into worrying and stressing about this game, while not going out to exercise or doing my homework. There are so much more things out there to do that are more beneficial to you than just playing SC2. I know many don't play it as excessively and actually manage to do other activities, but there are also those who really are 'slaves' to the game, because they are spending so much time playing on a virtual battlefield.

Of course, these are just my priorities and if someone wants to do it, that's okay. But I'm really suspicious of the idea that we are somehow constantly trying to 'spread E-sports'. Is it because we want to be accepted? I think it's just ignorant to try to force it being spread just because it is something that we enjoy. It will spread if it is to spread, that's all..

To be fair, you haven't explained what positive repercussions. I can guess that your typing speed have been helped out from Starcraft hotkeys though.

If you at least read my post I explained what I had personally found to be beneficial after that line.

I've gone from Bronze to Gold, started in December (about 400 games).
I've played a few FPS's and about 30 hours of RPG's. Oh, atleast 100 hours on Brood war and a tonne of Runescape.
Believe it or not, Runescape widened my vocabulary as a young boy, like, I didn't know what a Mortar and Pestle or flax was till then. Uh, games also gave me determination and perseverance. Yay for games!

It made me play more BW.
Gamer cred: Beta + like 10 months non-serious playing.

I'll agree with all the posts on how good BW is.

I just didn't really like the units too much either, or the fact that all the maps were perfectly balanced. Okay I sound like an idiot saying it but I totally LOVE weird imbalanced maps that you find in the Ladder and OldLadder depositories. To me they just add a whole new level of competition to see who's "better at the game," with your friends over countless games where map IMBA is just dominant.

On the other hand I can't really appreciate UUS and MBS either. Find that they're cool but I like clicking individual buildings and making units and not being terribly, terribly far behind.

Runescape: when i was like under 10 years old i played it and this is kinda were i learned my english before everyone else in school... and i even remember that i sometimes needed to correct the teacher (when we had english in school i mean)

EVE Online: Learned that its always better to have friends than solo... and it have tought me alot of things ALOT i tell you very advanced game so.. Ive learned that people do try to rip people off (was like 12 when i started to play i learned that ppl really did alot to try to steal your money as i started to understand that i started to get that people do that irl too)
also teached me much bout math to be honest...
Teached me alot of astronomy etc...
This is the game that have taught me the most...

Oh and btw games usually do affect you positivly... Like memory there is proof that gaming do give u a better memory... and ye i have a super good memory tbh... (cant say its cuz of that tho) and prolly alot of that memory that u "get" will prolly just get stuffed with gaming stuff anyway xD

And Starcraft has thought me to always save as much time as possible... kinda hard to explain how that have helped me but im sure u get it

And ofcourse it have gotten me alot of friends!! it have changed my life on a good way!

PS: Ive edited this alot so u might want to read again lol even tho i failed big rtime
I dont have any Windows in my room... I use linux... :)
