I have these friends that play starcraft pretty casually - nothing wrong with that, its just who they are. I'm not super good or anything, but these guys are low gold and think that they are sooooo legit. I was in a conversation with one of them the other day and he was like, "Yeah got 50th in my gold league, one step away from diamond!" And I just kinda chuckled and was like, "yeah man its a fun game." And he goes, "ever used those hot keys?" I was like, "yeah man, control groups, unit hotkeys, etc.?" And he was like, "oh man you use all those? That has to slow you down? You'd be diamond if ditched those."
...
And when I bring up pro starcraft and like GSL/MLG/etc. they're like "why would you watch that, its super nerdy." And I'm like oh...
Does any of you guys have friends like this? if so, how do you attempt to engage in discussions with them about sc2?
|
How old are you? And I don't think I have any friends like that, although I hardly even talk about SC2 with those that play it.
|
I'm 20 if that's relevant. University friends. Literally the only thing we have in common is SC2. I'm a biblical literature/ancient history major, them biology. They run cross country, I run administrative details of our campus ministries department (I go to a small Christian school).

The only solution is to take them on in 1v1, crush them, and whenever they try to give you advice or tell you they are wrong just tell them they can't say that to you since you crushed them!

Wow that is insane. Most of my sc2 friends who aren't as good, or not super into the game/scene know how to become good, they just don't play enough.
I laughed so hard at the part about ditching hotkeys.

Being bad at games is cool, but if you're a beast at it that makes you a nerd?
...yeah, that actually sounds like a lot of my friends. I figure it's their way of avoiding any ego-bruising

I've beat all of them in 1v1. It's just difficult to talk to them because they think they have a wealth of knowledge on SC2 when they don't even know about TL! A guy asked me, "so how do I get promoted?" That's a legit question. So I said, "You pretty just have to play a lot of games and win them. No secret, just get better." And he goes, "Well....I won three in a row the other day and I'm still Gold. I don't think that's right." And I go, "no no, like think 50 games. Not three." And they think that is an outrageous concept. I link them to various threads on TL and they think it's weird to read forums about a game...
I just get frustrated : /

One of my friends really hates SC2 and the progamer scene in it because he feels like it's very imbalanced. Interestingly, he really likes competitive SSBM (he can wavedash and do all that crazy stuff) and competitive Quake Live. I guess he's not "casual" because he's admitted himself that he's a nerd. Then I know someone else who has that ego you mentioned but actually backs it up by taking games off pros...

You know not everyone has to be a hardcore SC2 player. The game is designed for everyone to enjoy. That's what Blizz wants and that's how they make bank.
|
I thought I was a hotshot too when I was in gold and didn't know about tl. Just give them some time and play with them and beat them and slowly introduce them to the pro scene.

I understand, nor did I refute that fact. I'm completely ok if someone just plays for fun. I try to improve at sc2 but I take other games much less seriously. But to pretend like you know everything and try to offer advice when your a casual is frustrating.

lol yeah I'll play with them. I really don't wanna 2v2 or 3v3 like they've been asking because I don't wanna be responsible for carrying a team and people giving me crap if we lose. "well you must be bad because your the higher player and we still lost." ugh : /

Oh shit. Wavedashing? Bro if your friend can wavedash. YOU BETTER LISTEN. One day he's gonna wavedash into your house and blow it up.
On topic, lots of my friends are like that. They find it stupid how Starcraft can be like that, reading forums and progaming. Stuff like that, it's not for the regular community, they have to be slowly merged in one by one. That's how it works.
|
Usually my friends are too clueless, so we just have fun and stuff and don't bother getting too technical with the game. I have a few who are like, gold and stuff, they think they're pretty good but all they do is whine about how hard it is to be a "macro player" in those leagues because of all the cheese. I usually just shake my head and chuckle. I have no reason to prove them wrong, since I worked my way from bronze-diamond by getting better at mechanics... I just roll with it, when they complain about 4gate or marauders or something.
Just take the game less seriously around them, and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Crush them with really, really stupid strategies.

Just turn the other cheek. You're the biblical literature major, why are you asking us how to deal with the stupid masses?
|
As a person who is pretty competitive in almost everything i do, but doesnt have enough time to play sc2 at a decent level (like top dia w/ 1/2 the wins of everybody else, but its stupid to brag about shit like imo, if your not masters ur not good lol =P), i just try to dumb it down a bit for them.
If they REFUSE to accept the fact that they arnt good, throw them against a diamond/masters player, have them get destoryed, then have that person tell them how they got good. (Using control groups ftw? lolololololololol)
if even after that, they still dont get it, introduce them to TL, and appeal to their comptetitive aspect, whether by saying that your never going to be good if you dont go to TL, or something a little less aggresive, whatever suits you.
After that, dont talk to them about the game, just play them, destroy them, and pray that they wisen up eventually... lol
