This.

GL HF has become habits not a display of manners. You don't actually display respect by merely stating GLHF.

You use this as a defense, but it really just supports the opposing argument. You say you don't type GLHF because you don't really want them to have good luck, you want to beat them. Here, you are agreeing that most people don't LITERALLY mean "GLHF." It's a formality. It's polite. You don't have to mean it, but it's nice to say.

I believe that anything without true intent is not anything at all but a shell of itself. It's not manners if you callously and monotonously repeating the same set of lines they do to every other person. It's hilarious that people start off with gl hf and end with the worst set of rude comments you've heard. These "manners" are not manners at all but an implied and completely unnecessary set of apparently friendly gestures.

I guess to me the idea of saying GL HF and meaning it is okay. I don't just play the game to win, I play to improve and for fun. Losing cause I tried something gimmicky and got unlucky will just teach me more about the game. Losing cause I made an error or something etc. Why not wish your opponent the best of luck and to have the most fun. This should be a friendly sport after all.

It's become common courtesy to say such things even when you don't necessarily mean it. People say it with little to no thought nowadays. It just comes naturally to them because they are so used to saying it. It's plain; it's boring. People get it.

Guy's like White-Ra will have you believe they always mean such things when in reality they want to do their best to win.

With that said, when I'm at the card table I never wish a player good luck. I will have a good table conversation with them, but hell I want to take their money while I'm at it.

Just because you don't wish them good luck, doesn't mean you don't respect them as a person. -_-

If someone asks you "Hello, how are you?" Do you think it is more respectful to ignore them? To tell them off for asking?
Likewise, when someone says "GL HF," do you think it is more respectful to not respond?

With that said, you don't really think wishing someone good luck will change your chances of winning do you? Even if you don't mean it, it doesn't hurt to humor them.

If you want to be respectful, respond respectfully. If you don't want to be respectful, don't, but also don't come to a forum preaching about how our customs are "wrong" because you say so. That's a good way to start an argument you wont win.

From a sports background, shaking hands before a game is standard. GLHF represents the same mentality to me.

I never stated that anyone was wrong for saying it. I'm just saying that the majority of people do not mean it and that there's no reason to speak empty words.

Also, it's different if someone asks me a question. If I find that I like the person I will wish them to have fun. Games should be won by skill not luck even though it is a factor in the game. Let my opponents skill outshine mine.

This is retarded.... Has it ever occurred to you that a lot of people play for fun and a good game is more important than winning a game? When I play, I just want a good, fun game. So exactly that, GL HF. I am not some obsessive, hyper-competitive little nerd who has invested my entire ego into a fking video game so that I MUST WIN and wish absolutely horrible things on my opponents in the hopes that it will carry me to a victory. That's just fking SAD, bro.

And yes, I'm in Master league. The game is not that hard.

I mean it when I say it. as a very old bw player I find its very important to be manner to my opponent. The hardest games are often the most fun even if I lose. I see where you are coming from... but why intentionally bm people who are just doing something manner. stay quiet and don't talk to them if you don't want to. if you don't give a shit i'm sure they don't either.

Instead of looking at a piece, look at the whole. The question is innocent in itself (for it's the trigger); however, when you tie it in with the response you see the full picture. When someone answers with "Good" or "Fine" in many circumstances very little thought was put into it. They've been conditioned to respond that way. Same set of rules apply when someone uses "GL HF."

I tell people to be personable all the time and try to avoid such travesties of human dialogue.

Some people are superstitious, especially when it comes to poker players. Now, I wouldn't necessarily call myself superstitious, as I don't have a lucky hat, or a lucky hand for that matter like Doyle Brunson. I humor people all the time in other ways. I let my charisma show all the time.

Ah, the Golden Rule: treat others as you would like to be treated. I have no problem with this, but that doesn't necessarily mean I have to elicit or echo the same line back. If you are playing on the ladder odds are you don't know them. You have never met them. They are completely faceless and what you describe as the norm of etiquette loses some of its oomph (the Milgram experiment comes to mind). I don't recall calling your customs 'wrong' per say. I find it whimsical. We've had several conversations about several gestures including the GG, memes, and other shenanigans like ceremonies. The origins and developments tickle my fancy.

When I converse with people whether it be online or face-to-face I rather cut out all the shit and have a truly engaging conversation. Doesn't make me less of a person when I don't repeat 'GL HF' or use stupid meme's to elicit a response from people. Everyone's seen the magician pull the rabbit out of the hat before. It's old and outdated. Why not try something new?

I say glhf because I mean just that. I want him to have fun, and have good luck. I still want to cream him, don't get me wrong. But if he outplays me and wins, and I had fun losing it, I'm satisfied with not winning. Of course a win would be better. But I play to have fun. If he had fun, good for him. That makes me happy. I truly hope he has fun when he plays me.

Why not just say 'hf' then?

This makes sense. I don't understand the people that do just the "gl" half, though. You want me to be lucky in the game (and possibly beat you), but you don't want me to have fun doing it? I see more people typing just "gl" than just "hf."
